Sony entered the video game console market in 1994 and never looked back, with the PlayStation brand eventually growing into the dominant, immediately recognizable powerhouse it is in 2021. Today, the PlayStation 5 is a promising device with technological prowess its predecessors could only dream of – but power isn’t the only factor in determining what makes a great console. After nearly three decades in the console market, which PlayStation is the best – and which is the worst?
Sony first made a name for itself in the video game console scene with the original PlayStation, a device that innovated in a number of different ways. The arrival of the PlayStation in 1994 began the industry’s transition from cartridge-based video game consoles to compact discs, but might have never happened without a failed Nintendo-Sony partnership. Sony was originally meant to design a CD-ROM for what would become the SNES, but a number of factors fractured the relationship between the two companies at the time. Eventually, the deal was dropped, but Sony, soured by the experience and with a sizeable head start in video game design thanks to its work on the CD-ROM, decided to dive into the video game console scene itself instead.
Since then, Sony has become arguably the most dominant force in video games, with the PlayStation 4 achieving a level of success in a competitive market that would’ve been difficult to predict heading into its 2013 launch window. Whether or not it becomes the best-selling console of all time, it will either fall short of or surpass the mark set by some familiar competition – its ancestor, the PlayStation 2, which remains the top of the pack when it comes to console sales. With a full five PlayStation consoles now in the family, the differences between each PlayStation has become even more pronounced. Here is every PlayStation console, ranked from worst to best.
#5 – PlayStation 5
The only reason the PS5 is getting ranked lower than the PS3 is because of how new it is – it’s very likely the console lives to surpass its ill-fated sibling, but until that promise is realized, it’s huge lack of exclusives at time of writing is too much of a detriment. Add to that a current-gen launch that’s been less than smooth due to availability and it’s hard to say that the PS5 is starting off in a favorable spot.
However, the PS5 is also a major leap forward in technology for Sony, with its vaunted SSD capabilities and dramatic cooling system improvements just some of the reasons why fans are excited about its future. The DualSense is also a step-up in controller design and marks a departure from the standard DualShock aesthetic that has been the staple of PlayStations before the release of PS5. A stellar Demon’s Souls remake helped highlight the console’s potential, and with what appear to be locks for quality games in Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart and more coming, the PS5 at least seems to be destined to avoid PS3 levels of bad.
#4 – PlayStation 3
The PS3 was a disaster on a level Sony hadn’t experienced in video game console sales prior to its abysmal launch. The PlayStation 3 launched at a cool $599 USD price point, immediately alienating a huge number of consumers. The problems kept coming for the console, as Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi famously described the PS3 as difficult to develop for, creating a sense of unease about the device’s future. If developers weren’t excited about working with it, what hope did it have of producing great exclusives?
As it turned out, Sakaguchi’s statement wasn’t completely prophetic for the PS3 games library, even if it is the weakest the brand has ever had. Some great games did get their start on PS3, with The Last of Us, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves all finding a home on the console. Still, that lineup isn’t exactly stellar when compared to other Sony libraries, with its best entry, The Last of Us, doing a lot of the heavy lifting. To top everything off, the PS3 was ugly and bulky, too. It’s a definite low point in the console brand’s history, and if the PS5 had another year under its belt, the PS3 would almost certainly rank at the bottom of this list.
#3 – PlayStation 1
Coming in at a respectable third is none other than the progenitor of the PlayStation brand itself, the PS1. It’s difficult to imagine now, but so much of the PS1 was innovative when it released. It marked the beginning of the CD era of video games, helped establish Sony as a major force in the industry, created the DualShock design – which would persist (albeit with some adjustments each generation) all the way through the PS4 era – and more. In a period of time dominated by Nintendo and Sega, the PS1 allowed Sony to gain a foothold in the video game industry and spark even more competition between companies, pushing each brand to one-up the other. The PS1 was the first console to ship over 100 million units worldwide, too, so its contributions didn’t go unnoticed even during its life cycle.
The legacy the PS1 left behind, however, is one that’s integral to video game development. It was the site of some of the formative moments of 3D game design, with releases like Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, PaRappa the Rapper and more pushing the envelope of what video games could achieve. With Final Fantasy 7 Remake turning heads decades later and every Silent Hill rumor stirring up excitement in thousands of horror fans, it’s clear the PS1’s impact is still being felt now.
#2 – PlayStation 4
If the PS4 doesn’t become the best-selling game console of all time, it will only be because it comes from a family of overachievers. The PlayStation 4 ushered in an era of Sony dominance that the industry is still reeling from, with reports from as recent as six months ago highlighting sales that more than doubled those of the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The technology behind the PS4 saw it lauded for its graphics when compared to competitors, and its $399 USD price point, coupled with a better understanding of digital rights management, made it much more consumer friendly than its predecessor.
But a great console isn’t just made from an understanding of the climate it’s being introduced into, and the hardware backed up its promise with truly great PS4 exclusives. God of War, Spider-Man PS4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake are all on PS4, and that’s just scratching the surface of its incredibly deep games library. It’s certainly one of the best in history, and it helped cement the PS4 as must-own during its generation.
#1 – PlayStation 2
Consoles don’t accidentally end up as the best-selling of all time. The PS2 took the promise of the PS1 and ran with it to the tune of over 3800 games and over 1.5 billion copies of them sold, alongside sales over 155 million units of the console itself. The sheer depth of the console’s games library is wild, but here’s a quick list of some of its greatest hits: Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, God of War, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Devil May Cry, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Sly Cooper. That’s not counting the many more niche but still great entries like Dark Cloud 2 that help round out that depth.
It goes beyond the games and the sales, though. The PS2’s legacy is rooted in how it took an already amazing console and improved on it in nearly every way. At the time, including a DVD drive was a huge boon to families, making the console a home entertainment unit. The graphical leap from PS1 to PS2 was dramatic, and the console’s backwards compatibility meant fans who had PS1 libraries still got to enjoy them on the new console. So much of the nostalgia surrounding the PS2 is at least partially informed by its public perception as a consumer-friendly, forward-thinking console that wowed people both with its games and its innovations. The PS2 is one of the most important consoles ever created, and for that reason, it also ranks as the best PlayStation console ever made.
