5 Netflix Originals Coming Fall 2020 Were Excited To Watch (& 5 Were Not)

You’re spoiled for choice when looking for something to watch on Netflix. Hundreds of films and television shows are released every year on the streaming platform, so you will always have something to watch, no matter your preferred genre. Many titles on the service are Netflix Originals too, so you will always have something brand new to see.

Of course, not every Netflix Original has been a success. While some have garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, there have been more than a few bad movies and shows on the platform. In the coming weeks, there are plenty more Netflix Original shows and movies hitting the service. These are the most and least exciting of the bunch.

10 Excited For: The Haunting Of Bly Manor

In 2018, Netflix released The Haunting of Hill House, a scary reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s classic horror novel. It was widely appreciated by both critics and audiences and it scared the pants off everybody who saw it.

The follow-up series from director Mike Flanagan, The Haunting of Bly Manor, will be a loose adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn Of the Screw. Flanagan has promised something ‘unbelievably scary,’ and as he has already proven his horror credentials on both the small and large screen, fans are expecting good things from his latest series. It is set to premiere on October 9.

9 Not Excited: The Princess Switch: Switched Again

5 Netflix Originals Coming Fall 2020 Were Excited To Watch (& 5 Were Not)

If you enjoyed The Princess Switch, the Christmas-themed rom-com that debuted on Netflix in 2018, then you might be tempted to tune into this one. It will once again follow the adventures of both Stacey De Novo and her royal counterpart Lady Margaret, and the two lookalikes will again switch places for as yet undisclosed reasons in the film.

But if you didn’t enjoy the first film, this probably won’t be for you. The first found an audience, but it was considered generic by many. The story was one seen a hundred times before, and it was nothing more than a slightly upgraded Hallmark movie. See it (or don’t) around December.

8 Excited For: The Devil All The Time

5 Netflix Originals Coming Fall 2020 Were Excited To Watch (& 5 Were Not)

This long-awaited Netflix movie will be arriving mid-September, and if the source material is anything to go by, it should be worth seeing. The film is based on the epic 2011 novel by Donald Ray Pollock and chronicles the story of Arvin Russell, a Christian boy in the Bible Belt of the South, who protects his family from evil forces over several generations.

Tom Holland is playing Arvin in the film, and he will be tipping over into the dark side to battle sinister preachers, murderous drifters, and scarred memories of his own past. Judging by the trailer, the film will get very dark, so if you’re a fan of southern gothic and horror-noir, this is one film you won’t want to miss this September.

7 Not Excited: Julie And The Phantoms

If you’re a fan of teen movie musicals, this might be for you. But if that’s not your style, you might want to skip it. The series tells the story of a young teen called Julie, a talented singer, who loses inspiration after her mom dies. But then three ghostly musicians come into her life, and after joining their band, she rediscovers her voice.

Despite the phantom twist, the series seems very formulaic. It promises to be inspiring, but if you want to lift your spirits this September, you might want to watch something a little less predictable.

6 Excited For: Mank

Citizen Kane is often cited as one of the greatest movies ever made, and this Netflix Original film will take viewers behind the scenes of that Orson Welles classic. Of course, if you have never seen Citizen Kane, news of this film’s release on the streaming platform might not interest you. But if you heard that David Fincher, the director of Fight Club is helming the new film, you might be more inclined to tune in.

The film will debut on Netflix this October, and it is widely expected to be another Oscars contender for the streaming giant. Gary Oldman will star as Herman J. Mankiewicz (Mank), the screenwriter of the 1941 classic, and it will follow his personal and professional setbacks during the making of the film. Early word on the film is good, so this should be worth watching.

5 Not Excited: Welcome To Sudden Death

It’s the sequel to Sudden Death, Jean Claude Van Damme’s 1995 terrorist thriller. The actor is set to return in this film, although Michael Jai White will be the star. If you’re a fan of either, you might want to tune in to this film.

However, if you don’t want to see an aging Van Damme in a rehash of a film that wasn’t critically-acclaimed in the first place, you might want to skip it. Tune in for the bone-crunching scenes of violence if you want to, but it feels like a direct-to-DVD type of movie.

4 Excited For: Rebecca

80 years after Daphne Du Maurier’s novel was adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock comes another screen adaptation. Lily James will star as the woman who marries handsome widower Maxim de Winter after a whirlwind romance, and who finds herself living in the shadow of his dead wife, Rebecca.

To say any more about the film’s plot would do it a disservice, as you can expect secrets and plot twists aplenty. Director Ben Wheatley has also promised to put a fresh spin on the tale to surprise audiences who are already familiar with the novel and earlier film. You can expect to see this on Netflix in October and it promises to be a sumptuous gothic treat.

3 Not Excited: Hubie Halloween

5 Netflix Originals Coming Fall 2020 Were Excited To Watch (& 5 Were Not)

Adam Sandler stars in this Halloween comedy, and he will be joined by regular cohorts Kevin James, Rob Schneider, and Tim Meadows. Sandler plays a community volunteer in the film and one who is mocked by kids and adults alike. All that is about to change, however, when he is called upon to save Halloween or so the brief synopsis says.

Fans don’t know much more about the film than that. It could be good, but then again, Adam Sandler and his creative team are behind some of the worst-reviewed Netflix originals on the platform, so it could be awful.

2 Excited For: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

5 Netflix Originals Coming Fall 2020 Were Excited To Watch (& 5 Were Not)

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this tale of a group of conflicting jazz performers in 1920s Chicago certainly has a strong pedigree behind it. Until recently, it had been overshadowed by other Netflix Originals, but this changed when a terrible tragedy shook movie lovers everywhere.

On the 28th of August, Chadwick Boseman passed away. The 43-year-old actor was among the finest of his generation, and his passing shocked and saddened everyone. This film will be his swan song and will likely go down in history for that reason. The film’s release date is still to be announced.

1 Not Excited: Christmas On The Square

If you’re a Dolly Parton fan, this could be your best Christmas present ever, as she is the lead in this upcoming movie musical. She has even written a dozen songs for the film! However, she’s been down this road before and has made many other Christmas-themed musicals. So, the question remains: Do we really need another one?

Of course, the film might be great. The songs might even get viewers dancing. But as the film is set to be a cross between A Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life, it won’t be very original. Bah humbug!
