The classic ’90s Disney princesses vs. the new 21st century ones: it’s an everlasting debate. But who is truly the best of them all?

In 1937, Disney released its first animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. From there, we saw Pinocchio, Fantasia, and The Reluctant Dragon. However, Snow White was truly the beginning of it all with the Disney princesses.
For many of us ’90s babies, we grew up with Disney’s princesses and wished our lives were like the women we watched on screen. The older we got, Disney kept on pumping out bigger and better Disney princess films but a piece of us will always love the original movies better. From Elsa and Anna in Frozen to Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine, let’s compare the two vibes.
10 ’90s: They Were Our First On-Screen Heroes
Yes, Snow White was released in the late ’30s but it’s a film that many ’90s babies grew up watching (the same can be said for a few other films on this list). The characters that we grew up watching in these earlier Disney movies were our first heroes.
Even though many sang and danced their way through heartache or turbulence, they were inspiring and we wanted to be like them. There was nothing like seeing Snow control the room with her homemaking skills or seeing Sleeping Beauty’s connection to wildlife. These princesses were the first of many for us.
9 ’90s: They Kept Our Imaginations Running Wild
That’s what the wonderful world of Disney does, right? They cast their own magical spell on each movie and young viewers become enthralled with what they’re looking at. So many mystical things happen in these animated films that are truly fictional but they opened our minds. Fairy godmothers, spells, magic carpets, tigers for pets… These princesses that we grew up watching had it all and expanded our imaginations. (Even if it was all make-believe.)
8 ’90s: There’s Nothing Better Than The OGs
Every period has an original something. Millennials may call the Backstreet Boys or the Spice Girls the original band but our elders will say the Beatles were. It’s all subjective. The same can be said for Disney princesses.
Twenty-first-century princesses are great and all that but it’s hard to get over our first loves — the original princesses. Plus, does one really want to compare the attributes of Tangled’s Rapunzel and Little Mermaid’s Ariel? That’s asking for war!
7 ’90s: Simplicity
Listen, CGI and all the heavy-duty computer graphics are great and all that but there’s nothing like the simplicity of the ’90s. Princess Jasmine’s braid is just as luxurious without seeing each strand of hair. And following Nala around Pride Rock was just as exciting in 1994. The things these ’90s princesses did was out of this world but simple enough to be believable. They never needed the magic of CGI to be good.
6 ’90s: Old Classics Brought To Life
The cool thing about some of the most popular Disney movies is that they’re stories that were spun for children. The Lion King is actually based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Pocahontas is based on a real woman in history (although the story was altered significantly).
As kids, these are things we don’t notice when watching along but as we get older, it’s a cool connection to both original pieces of work and history.
5 21st Century: Princesses No Longer Need A Love Interest
In Disney classics like Aladdin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Lion King, Pocahontas, and The Little Mermaid (just to name a few), love is a huge theme throughout. It was Aladdin’s crush on Princess Jasmine that brought him to his wish with the Genie. It was a kiss that brought both Sleeping Beauty and Snow White back to life. Getting married to a prince was enough to save Cinderella from her evil step-family. But in the 21st century, a Disney princess no longer needs a love interest to be seen as worthy. She’s her own person and independent enough to accomplish whatever task is set in her path.
4 21st Century: Goals Are More Inspiring
To be frank, many inquisitive viewers make ’90s Disney princesses out to be helpless but they’re all strong in their own way. And while many had princes come to the rescue and save them, 21st century princesses are strong enough to save themselves.
Rapunzel may have had Flynn Ryder by her side but she’s the one who saved him and got herself to her biological mom and dad. And in Frozen, it wasn’t love with a man that brought Elsa and Anna to safety, it was their love for each other.
3 21st Century: Distant Yet Relatable
Can we all admit that Tiana is the most relatable 21st century Disney princess? Actually, she may be the most relatable Disney princess of all time. Unlike some of the other women on this list who were born into royalty, Tiana from Princess and the Frog worked her way through early adulthood. She had the same goal since she was a child and worked tooth and nail until she succeeded. Seeing her work hour after hour around unappreciative people to buy her own restaurant was enough to inspire any viewer to chase their dreams. Twenty-first-century princesses are inspiring because they’re now relatable.
2 21st Century: It’s A Win For People Of Color
If you look back in time, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Ariel were all white and mostly blonde. This made it hard for young children of color to relate to their favorite princesses.
Eventually, we saw Princess Jasmine, Mulan, Tiana, and Moana who were all women of color and obviously capable of the same things the other blonde princesses were able to do. It’s nice that in 2020 we can bring attention to this glaring issue and make everyone feel included.
1 21st Century: The Graphics Are Enchanting
I know I said that ’90s Disney movies were fantastic because they brought simplicity but we can’t deny that CGI and the graphics of 2020 are out of this world. Just take a look at Frozen. This animated film is a global success that brought in billions. The way the movie was created was so beautifully done and had epic animation. Truth be told, no matter how great our ’90s princesses are, movies like Brave, Tangled, and Frozen blow others out of the water.
