With so many iconic franchises getting revivals, should Back to the Future create a fourth installment, or be better left alone?

For pretty much the last thirty years, fans have wondered now and again about a fourth installment of Back to the Future. Part I famously released in 1985 with Parts II and III following in 1989 and 1990, respectively. The time travel film has a huge fandom, so could a fourth movie be in store?

The hotly debated idea of Back to the Future Part IV could be unbelievably awesome, or it could be a big mistake. Check out five reasons why the additional sequel should happen (and five reasons why the movies are best left alone).

10 Should: More To Explore

Three phenomenal time travel movies have proven that there is always more to explore. Marty and Doc have seen the 50s, the “future” (which has now passed), an alternate universe in the ’80s, and even the Old West. The third movie is the only one that has departed from the fifty-five-year sphere of the main characters’ lives. There is so much to explore with additional times and locales.

9 Shouldn’t: The Writers Don’t Want It

Back to the Future was written by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, directed by Zemeckis, and produced by Gale (among others). The writers have made it clear that a fourth movie shouldn’t be in the cards. On the Back to the Future episode of YouTube series “Reunited with Josh Gad,” Gad asked the cast and crew about a fourth plot line. Writer Bob Gale jokingly answered, “Well, it would have to be that Doc and Marty find out we’re thinking about making another Back to the Future movie and come back to stop us from doing such a crazy thing.”

8 Should: Fierce Fandom

Back to the Future fans of all ages are passionate about the movies. There is a lot to keep track of, especially with the complicated story of the second film.

But the fans have it all down to a science. They know all the intricacies of each plot and don’t miss a beat when mapping out the DeLorean’s timeline. Why not give them something new to obsess over?

7 Shouldn’t: No More Good Ideas?

Robert Zemeckis elaborated to Josh Gad on YouTube, “If I had an idea that I could’ve pitched to Bob [Gale] with a straight face, we would have made it.” Zemeckis’ comment implies that he hasn’t had the right idea for a fourth film in the franchise. Fans can speculate, most likely accurately, that Zemeckis and Gale have tossed around ideas for the movie before now. Maybe nothing ever felt right for them.

6 Should: A Long Dry Spell

It has been thirty years since fans got to celebrate a brand new Back to the Future movie. There would, without a doubt, be heightened anticipation for the fourth installment’s release after all this time. In the last three decades, parents and grandparents have shown the movies to their children and grandchildren, thus creating new viewers who will geek out over another trip through time.

5 Shouldn’t: Has It Been Too Long?

Though some would say, “Never say never,” others might think the window of opportunity for Back to the Future 4 has already closed. The cast is thirty years older, and even though they look great, things can never pick up right where they left off. Perhaps some convincing prosthetic makeup could be used again, but a better course of action would be an entirely new story with the characters around the same ages as the actors.

4 Should: The Cast’s Enthusiasm

Most of the Back to the Future cast is quite enthusiastic about their work on the franchise. They seem happy to reunite and reminisce about the time they spent filming the original three movies.

This attitude bodes well for a new project. Even if it isn’t exactly the same as the others, it would likely have some support from the cast who made the classic movies a success.

3 Shouldn’t: Bad Blood

Well, maybe not every cast member is ready to jump back in. There is some serious bad blood between Bob Gale and Crispin Glover, the actor who played George McFly in the first film. In the second and third movies, Glover was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman. Although Crispin Glover is rumored to have bowed out of the sequels over salary disagreements or morals, he is justifiably angry that his likeness was still used through prosthetic makeup on the other actor. Glover told Collider, “I cannot promote that film.”

2 Should: New Technology

It’s hilarious to watch some of the imagined futuristic technology, especially in Back to the Future Part II. The sky is the limit on technology these days, so the writers could develop some fascinating creations, or they could just use the tools and devices that many rely on every day. 2020 seems like a great time for time travel with all the gadgets and gizmos people use now.

1 Shouldn’t: No Theaters?

A Back to the Future release is the kind of event that numerous viewers would want to see in theaters. However, the age of coronavirus means that theater-going is still unsafe in many areas. For some, plopping Back to the Future 4 onto a streaming service would be a dream come true. For others, it would feel kind of anticlimactic. With no firm plans in place for any new installment, there is still plenty of time to work out the logistics.
