Spies and as such, spy films, are an absolute joy for audiences to watch and revel in. From saving the world to using cool gadgets and facing down iconic villains, spies are legendary in cinema and none from the large list of spies are as legendary as the likes of Bond, James Bond.
The epic MI6 agent has graced the silver screen in many different incarnations, each one bringing something new to the spy and proving to be box office successes, raking in absurd amounts of money. However, as the years wore on, new spies began to pop up, making many wonders if perhaps they are just as great or better than Bond.
10 Greatest Spy: Quotes and One-Liners
Every hero needs a one-liner. Whether it comes before or after a kill or the defeat of a dastardly villain, one-liners can easily relieve the tension and sound awesome at the same time. As such, it’s become a staple of every action hero to have a one-liner ready.
In just about every iteration of Bond from Connery to Brosnan, there’s been plenty of amazing quotes and one-liners. Whether it be cheesy like “Time to face gravity” or the ever classic “Shaken, not stirred,” Bond has set the bar for one-liners in the world of spies.
9 Alternative: Harry Tasker (True Lies)
If there was a contest for the best one-liners in action films, the decision would come down to a select few, with James Bond leading the pack. However, Bond would be followed and maybe even beaten by another lesser-known spy with some amazing lines, Harry Tasker.
For those asking “who?”, Harry Tasker, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action-comedy True Lies, had some truly memorable lines during his time with the CIA. From “Here’s my invitation” to simply “You’re Fired”, Tasker could be seen as the king of one-liners in what has become considered one of Arnold’s best movies.
8 Greatest Spy: Rogues Gallery
The key to any great hero is an even better villain. It has become a time-honored tradition of spy films that the villains a large part of the film and may, at points, even overshadow the hero. For Bond, that happens in most of his movies.
In his twenty-four, soon to be twenty-five film run, Bond has encountered a few bad but a lot of great villains, from the metal, toothed Jaws to the deadly hat wielder Oddjob and even Sean Bean, Bond certainly knows how to craft a phenomenal rogues gallery.
7 Alternative: Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Kingsman: The Secret Service)
While Bond’s been around for years, other spies have only recently managed to step into the spotlight, such as Gary Unwin, otherwise known as Eggsy. Recruited by the British intelligence agency, Kingsman, Eggsy has faced off against a lot of baddies in only two films.
Whether it be a crazed Elton John fan or a germaphobe intent on having the world tear itself apart to “Free Bird” to a woman with razor-sharp legs and a man with a robot arm, Eggsy has encountered enough enjoyable rogues to fill a book which Kingsman: The Secret Service and the sequel a wonderful and underrated spy movie.
6 Greatest Spy: Gadgets
“Boys never grow up. They just grow older and their toys get more expensive.” Whoever came up with that quote definitely wasn’t wrong. Boys of all ages have grown up with plenty of toys over the years and yet, as they got older, they found themselves interested in far more fascinating ones.
For Bond fans, those toys are his endless supply of gadgets. After, who hasn’t wanted an exploding pen, a car with an ejector seat and machine guns, or even a bagpipe flamethrower? Bond always has the best toys.
5 Alternative: Ethan Hunt (Mission: Impossible Series)
Taking a book, like the ones that the Bond series is based on, and turning it into films is one thing. However, adapting a tv-series into a film while keeping the same premise, feel, and gadgets is a feat all on its own.
Based on the series of the same name, Mission: Impossible follows the likes of MIF agent Ethan Hunt as he and his team save the world, allowing one to one admire Hunt’s amazing collection of gadgets like the incredibly useful masks that put Bond’s to shame.
4 Greatest Spy: Over The Top To Grounded
It goes without saying that any movie can become goofy and over the top as the series progresses. Even if the series begins strong, chances are there’s a fair chance it will dive deep into levels of cheesiness, like the Bond franchise did as they continually switched actors.
However, although the series did suffer a few over the top antics, it still manages to find its balance again. While some of the iterations of Bond kept the cheesiness, others, like Craig, managed to ground Bond in a fantastic way.
3 Alternative: Jack Ryan (The Jack Ryan Franchise)
Now, Jack Ryan isn’t technically a spy. More often than not, he’s been used in his usual capacity, as an analyst, making him almost like Q more than Bond. That being said, however, Ryan has been on plenty of adventures and trips that would classify him as spy material.
Although an unusual spy, Ryan has been through it all. From taking on Soviets in a submarine to terrorists, Ryan has managed to stay grounded despite a few cheesy bits, with each new actor bringing something new to the role.
2 Greatest Spy: Action Set Pieces
Audiences crave action. It’s one of the main reasons why action films are so popular and in-demand these days, the constant need to feel a rush and to watch white-knuckled as the hero performs some death-defying stunt while taking on the big bad.
In the fifty years and plus that Bond’s been around, he’s managed to fuel that need for action. Undersea battles, some of the best car chases in spy films, battles in and above Fort Knox, and even in space have sated fans need for action in a way others cannot.
1 Alternative: Jason Bourne (The Bourne Trilogy)
What’s even better than a spy? A badass spy, one whose more than willing to whoop anyone ass and look good doing it. While it can be argued that just about every spy does this, only one can do it the best: Jason Bourne.
When audiences were first introduced to Bourne, an amnesiac spy, in The Bourne Identity, they weren’t prepared for the action to follow. Tight, kinetic, and full of epic action scenes unlike anything seen before, the Bourne trilogy has made Matt Damon into quite the action star and a super spy.
