After almost a full year with no scripted series, Disney Plus managed to release The Right Stuff, a weekly series based on the stellar 1983 film and original Tom Wolfe novel about the beginning of NASA and space exploration in the United States. It has been a welcome reprieve from the onslaught of improvisational puppet-series and documentary shows from the streaming service.

However, it also comes nearly a year after Apple TV+ debuted a space exploration series of its own, For All Mankind. While the two shows are both prominent players in the television zeitgeist for spacebound stories, there are viable reasons to prefer one over the other.

10 The Right Stuff: Timeless Story

The Right Stuff has the benefit of coming from a long lineage of a gripping space story. As aforementioned, the 1983 film is a thrill and the book is an engaging read. Therefore, The Right Stuff gets to play in the sandbox of a beloved tale.

While this does allow for the series to become somewhat familiar, there’s still plenty to love about seeing the same story again. Since this is in television format, the audience is able to go deeper than a two-hour film would have otherwise allowed.

9 For All Mankind: Creative Liberties

On the other hand, For All Mankind may not have the benefit of retelling a classic story. Instead, it follows the path of an alternate universe. Rather than retreated history, For All Mankind spreads its wings and imagines a fictionalized universe where the U.S. lost the Space Race.

For those who prefer a well-crafted fictional tale, For All Mankind laps circles around The Right Stuff. After all, it has the benefit of putting a story to screen that the world has never seen before.

8 The Right Stuff: The Road Map

Because For All Mankind is about an alternate universe, it’s a bit unpredictable in terms of its direction. With The Right Stuff, though, it prevails because it has a clear road map beyond its first season on Disney Plus.

With The Right Stuff, the promise exists for more than just the early days of NASA. Disney’s logline for the series explicitly states that The Right Stuff will tell a sweeping tale all the way to the moon landing across multiple series. That sort of ambition is to die for.

7 For All Mankind: Sony And Apple

This is not to say that Sony and Apple are flawless media making companies; everyone has their misfires. However, their production behind For All Mankind is vastly more engaging than the one behind The Right Stuff.

National Geographic is a vital resource in the world, but its television crafting capabilities have never been entirely aces. Their stories tend to be lighter and lacking that “special something.” With the creative team assembled by the more cutting-edge Sony and Apple, For All Mankind feels more like important television than The Right Stuff.

6 The Right Stuff: DiCaprio On Board

That being said, The Right Stuff has the benefit of possessing the biggest star across the two series. Leonardo DiCaprio serves as an executive producer behind the scenes of the Disney Plus space show.

While this isn’t necessarily a measure of quality, it does ensure that The Right Stuff is reaching for a vital edification for its audience about topics they may be unfamiliar with. By looking to the past with DiCaprio’s Earth-minded sensibilities at the helm, The Right Stuff becomes crucial television for the future, while For All Mankind is more about entertainment.

5 For All Mankind: The Yeager Of It All

First of all, neither series features a portrayal of the dynamite Chuck Yeager. However, For All Mankind is better than The Right Stuff because it was never expected to include the pilot in the series. The Right Stuff is sorely lacking without him.

Yeager is one of the most vital parts of the story. However, The Right Stuff eschews him entirely and is all the weaker for it. For All Mankind benefits by delving into more creative character takes instead of relying on audience delight at seeing Yeager again.

4 The Right Stuff: The Mad Men Vibes

Anyone who’s watched The Right Stuff knows how much it evokes some of the vibes that Mad Men used to bring to the table. It’s a period series with an emphasis on a work versus home life and a traditional sense of masculinity that the world doesn’t see anymore, for better and for worse.

While The Right Stuff isn’t quite on Mad Men’s level (considering the latter is one of the best dramas ever made), even the evocation of a comparison is enough to prop it above For All Mankind.

3 For All Mankind: Music

As a period story, The Right Stuff has a pretty delightful soundtrack comprised of some retro jams that help center the audience in the time of the story. That being said, For All Mankind still has the advantage on the musical front.

In addition to Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, and Elvis Presley being included on the soundtrack, For All Mankind also has a killer original score. That comes courtesy of Jeff Russo, an immaculate composer who also worked on Fargo.

2 The Right Stuff: A Disney+ First

For the most part Disney Plus’ original television output has been limited to content for kids and teenagers, like the underrated High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Even when it did venture into more “dramatic” territory, it was limited to genre fare, like The Mandalorian.

Now, though, almost a year after its launch, Disney Plus is championing a drama series made plainly for adults. It’s still largely family friendly, but its high-quality production signals a step forward for Disney in the streaming wars.

1 For All Mankind: “Hi Bob” And Adult Mentalities

For All Mankind manages to top The Right Stuff even in the capacity of “made for adults,” though. Apple’s plan in the streaming wars has been to make immaculate television for specific, quality-seeking audiences.

With For All Mankind, even just the seventh episode, “Hi Bob,” swims circles around anything put out by The Right Stuff. Violence, sex scandals, mental health. They’re all topics in this installment and they’re all topics Disney is likely averse to.
