Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an indie game that released in September 2021. Many gamers have been looking forward to playing this one and it hasn’t disappointed, with many fans considering it to be one of the best games that released this year.

While Kena: Bridge of Spirits is certainly a great game, there are some problems with it that hold it back, and it would be a much better experience if these things were changed. If some of these issues can be patched in future updates, the game could go from great to truly excellent.

10 Like: The Combat Is Fun

One of the best things about Kena is how great it feels to fight the enemies that players encounter throughout the game. The most common way to fight against them is with Kena’s staff. When attacking lightly, players can attack quickly but not deal much damage, while when attacking heavily, they’ll slow down but the staff will deal more damage.

Players can also defend themselves with the pulse ability, creating a forcefield around Kena. Throughout the game, Kena will obtain more things that players can use in combat, making it even more enjoyable.

9 Don’t Like: The Map Could Be Better

Throughout the game, players will certainly have to look at the map a lot as it can be quite easy to get lost in the world. Unfortunately, unlike most video games, players can’t simply look at the map while playing. They have to look at it separately, which shortly interrupts the fun.

To make things worse, it is very convenient to warp around the world, but players will only be able to do this from specific areas. It would have been more enjoyable if players could see part of the map at the corner of the screen and go wherever they wanted without having to be in certain places.

8 Like: Boss Battles Are Thrilling

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

The bosses in Kena are a lot of fun to fight against, and can be quite challenging when playing on higher difficulties, which makes the battles thrilling. They are all very unique and there are often small tricks that players need to find out in order to defeat them quickly.

From the stronger monsters that Kena encounters throughout her adventure to the corrupted versions of spirits she tries to save, every boss in the game is fun.

7 Don’t Like: Some Of The Puzzles Are Too Difficult & Slow Players Down

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

While some of the puzzles can be fun, it is difficult to figure out what to do in order to get past a lot of them, which can significantly slow a player down. The worst thing about them is how there are parts of the game where players will need to solve multiple challenging puzzles in a row before progressing to the next area of the world or fighting the next boss.

If they were spaced out more and were either easier or at least gave players a better idea on what they need to do, the puzzles would have been more fun to solve.

6 Like: The Music Is Wonderful

A soundtrack is very important to a game. During epic boss battles, the music can make players feel more excited to beat them, or during a scary moment the suspenseful sounds can make players even more terrified. Kena: Bridge of Spirits has a great soundtrack that is both nice to listen to and fits the tone of the game.

The unique instruments and vocals that appear in some songs are beautiful to listen to. Next to music from NieR and The Legend of Zelda, this game has some of the best music in recent memory for immersing players into its world.

5 Don’t Like: Players Level Up By Finding Rot

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

Levelling up is a common concept in video games, but while players have to gain experience points by fighting against enemies in most titles, it works differently in Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

Players are rewarded by exploring the world as they level up when finding Rot. However, players need to find a lot of Rot in order to get to the next level. While this is a great way to get players to explore the world, it would have been nice to get experience points as well, which would have also made battles seem more important.

4 Like: The Upgrades Are Very Helpful

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

One of the reasons why levelling up may be different in Kena: Bridge of Spirits compared to other games is that a player’s level determines whether they can upgrade the Rot or Kena’s abilities.

These upgrades, though there aren’t a lot, are very helpful. They allow players to attack enemies in different ways and the attacks themselves can be stronger. They also allow the Rot to get more involved in the combat.

3 Don’t Like: Characters Aren’t In The Game For Long

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

While the world is great and there are interesting parts of the plot, the worst thing in the game’s story is that, with the exception of the Rot, Kena is mostly on her own. The characters that help her in her journey are only around for a little while and though they are likable, it’s hard to become attached to them when they leave shortly after being introduced.

Fans would have liked to get to know Kena’s companions more, especially since a lot of them are even more interesting than she is.

2 Like: The Art Style Is Beautiful

5 Things We Like About Kena Bridge Of Spirits (& 5 Things We Dont)

One of the things that caught a lot of fans’ interest was Kena: Bridge of Spirits’ unique art style. The setting is beautiful, the Rot are adorable, and everything looks like it came from a movie made by Disney or Pixar.

This only makes watching the cutscenes and exploring the world a lot more fun than it would have been if it looked different.

1 Don’t Like: There Are Some Bugs That Should Be Fixed

Many games have bugs that need to be fixed, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits is no exception. Though it doesn’t happen often, there are times where Kena gets stuck for a moment.

There are also some chests that won’t open when players get close to them. Small problems like these aren’t that serious of an issue as most of the game works great, but they should be fixed in order to make the experience even better.
