5 Times Thor & Loki Had the Best Sibling Rivalry (& 5 Times It Was Gamora & Nebula)

Loki vs. Thor and Gamora vs. Nebula make up the MCU’s greatest siblings rivalries. We wonder which one is actually the best.

One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that its characters are super relatable. This aspect is displayed at its very best with the siblings that exist within the multiverse. The super siblings fight it out on such a grander scale than is possible at even the most fraught family Thanksgiving.

None of the siblings display this better than the pairings of Thor/Loki and Gamora/Nebula. If there is anything obvious about super-powered siblings is that the stakes are always higher. When they fight, not only could bones get broken, but so could entire planets.

10 Thor & Loki: Get Help

This moment from Thor: Ragnarok is truly a fan favorite. However, in moments of these two godly brothers and their sibling rivalry, it is low on the list as Thor and Loki are trying to figure out a distraction for stealing a ship to escape and get back to Asgard to fight their long-lost sister, Hela. Thor gets super excited and tells Loki that they should do “Get help.” Loki fights it, saying he hates it but Thor pushes for it.

The elevator doors open, and sure enough, Thor won this battle as they do get help – and he gets to throw his brother into people, so double win.

9 Gamora & Nebula: Body Upgrades

Thanos took in both Gamora and Nebula and took them as his own daughters. Instead of wanting them for companionship and love, he pits them against each other consistently and even puts them through painful procedures to upgrade their bodies. Nebula doesn’t like it any more than Gamora, but she puts herself through it more peacefully and longer than Gamora to raise above her in Thanos’ eyes.

It is the start of their long and drawn out sibling rivalry, where they both are willing to go to extremes to try and outdo the other – for a man neither of them can stand.

8 Thor & Loki: Ruined Coronation

Loki and Thor were raised as brothers, and in flashbacks, the audience sees that Odin played if off that either one of them could be his successor for King of Asgard. This is not true, though. He was never going to put Loki on the throne. This leads to Thor being named, and Loki’s lifelong resentment to bubble over.

Before he knows he was a prize of war before he understands he is truly a frost giant, Loki plots to ruin his brother’s coronation by letting his people’s mortal enemies into the most sacred room of Asgard. It is unclear if this is masterfully passive-aggressive or just aggressive, but either way, point to Loki.

7 Gamora & Nebula: Saving Each Other To Destroy Each Other

Gamora and Nebula can’t shake their desire to outdo the other. This is proven in many ways over flashbacks and during the time of the movies. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula keeps track of Gamora’s movements to turn her into Ronan. She pursues Gamora after the Guardians manage to hold an Infinity Stone and destroy Ronan. Nothing will stop her from besting her sister.

Gamora is no better. In the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gamora and the rest of the Guardians (minus baby Groot) engage in a tough and messy battle. They don’t do this for money, but so that the Sovereigns will turn Nebula over to them. Gamora is not doing this to rescue her sister, but to bring her to Nova Corps and turn her in.

6 Thor & Loki: Bringing Earth Into Their Sibling Spat

An entire realm was not enough to contain the rivalry between Thor and Loki. After Loki gets Thor banished to Earth by many different deceptions and manipulations, he visits his broken brother. He finishes him by telling him that not only is Odin dead (lie) but that he would not undo the last act of their father. Thor would remain banished.

When Thor’s loyal friends endangered Loki’s plan by telling the God of Thunder the truth, Loki used his power as sitting King to send the Destroyer – an advanced robot that eliminates any threat to Asgard – down to Earth to kill his brother. After a heartfelt plea of mercy by Thor, Loki lets him think he has won, only to blast him when he isn’t expecting it.

5 Gamora & Nebula: Chasing Each Other Across The Galaxies

Gamora and Nebula have the biggest and longest game of hide and seek out of any siblings ever. They chase each other across galaxies, evading and dodging the other. The galactic game may have started to please their father, but what drives these two is each other. No matter what, they are trying to outdo each other not just for Thanos but for themselves.

Their relationship consists of Gamora trying to beat Nebula to every mark and Nebula teaming up with Ronan for nothing more than to find Gamora and be the one to beat her. This took them to extremes, like Nebula entering the prison they broke out of to look for Gamora, Gamora capturing Nebula to get her arrested, Nebula escaping and turning the Ravagers onto their trail, and the list goes on. Its sibling jousting for the top to the extreme.

4 Thor & Loki: Going For The Throne – By Any Means Necessary

In every sibling rivalry, there is an end goal – an award to win. For these siblings, that prize is a literal throne. Thor and Loki both want to be the king. Loki may go about it in a more aggressively violent manner, but they both are competing for their father’s role – and therefore, his approval. From childhood, they are competing to show why they should be the one to take over the throne.

Thor is willing to endanger a peace treaty that has existed for decades to prove how great of a warrior he is, a leader. Loki is willing to get his brother cast out, travel through dimensions to destroy his brother’s remaining will, and then assume the throne. Thor is willing to destroy the Bifrost and leave love behind to prove he is worthy of the throne. Loki teams up with Thor for a last deception letting his brother think him dead right after they made up. He then exiles his father to Earth and poses as the man to finally rule. This is an amazing rivalry to watch play out, and the two interacting is pure hilarity.

3 Gamora & Nebula: Fight On Ego

Not only a high for the two and their sibling rivalry, but the fight between these sisters on Ego during the second movie may also be one of the best one on one battles in the first three phases. These two are leaving nothing on the floor. They are trading grievances against each other as much as full-force, deadly blows.

The pinnacle of this fight comes when Nebula yells that all she ever wanted was Gamora to be her sister – that Gamora was all she had. Gamora pulls up and, for the first time, starts to understand exactly what they have been doing to each other in the name of their demented adoptive father.

2 Thor & Loki: Grandmaster’s Competition

This may be the epitome of the duo’s rivalry. When Loki and Thor end up on Sakaar, Loki manages to worm his way into the Grandmaster’s favor. He does not go look for his brother and does not speak up for him once he is captured. He is more than willing to live out the rest of his time there, letting his brother float around somewhere unknown.

Even after he realizes that Thor is being processed for the contest, he is willing to sacrifice him for himself. It’s the ultimate sibling rivalry moment.

1 Gamora & Nebula: Deadliest Woman (er…Women) In The Galaxy

Whereas Loki and Thor’s big award was the throne of Asgard, Gamora and Nebula’s sibling rivalry led up to one of them earning the name of the deadliest woman in the galaxy. This title ultimately goes to Gamora, but the fight to earn it started as soon as they were both under Thanos’s rearing.

He pitted them against each other willingly and then encouraged their deadly competition. This sibling rivalry can make even the most dysfunctional sibling relationship in real life look tame. From surgical body alterations to training to be a weapon themselves, the rivalry between these two changed every aspect of them, physically, emotionally, and mentally.
