Disney Channel shows Lizzie McGuire and Andi Mack are each about middle school students and the highs and lows of that time in a person’s life. Airing on Disney Channel at different times, the world had progressed and changed by the time Andi Mack premiered, and aspects of that show come across as more updated than Lizzie McGuire. However, Lizzie McGuire remains a Disney Channel favorite of fans who had watched the series and reruns when episodes aired on Disney Channel.

Terri Minsky created both shows and, unlike several other Disney Channel original shows, were about regular, relatable people. They didn’t have magical powers, no one lived a double life, and no one was famous or trying to be. Both shows thrived in being about normalcy and what it meant to be thirteen. There were plenty of similarities between the two shows; however, there were also several differences.

10 Similar: Middle School

Lizzie McGuire and Andi Mack each primarily take place in middle school. But, it isn’t just the background or setting for the show. Middle School also acts as a way to capture a moment in time. It isn’t just about classes and grades, even if they are relevant. The shows portray teenagers’ attitudes during that point in their lives, what they’re going through, and how they deal with those thoughts and emotions.

9 Different: Main Character’s Definitive Interest In Something

In Lizzie McGuire, Lizzie wanted to be great at something. As an average student, Lizzie wanted to be above average at an activity, and when she eventually found it, Lizzie wasn’t thrilled with what she had a natural talent for. Lizzie quits Rhythmic Gymnastics after her first competition, but Lizzie never has a specific talent that she utilizes throughout the series.

Andi Mack, on the other hand, proves to be a talented artist. Andi’s main medium is crafts, and as the series continues, Andi spreads out her abilities, eventually showing she is good enough to go to art school.

8 Similar: Cyrus And Gordo

Although their personalities may not be the same, they share a similar role in their respective shows. Gordo and Cyrus grew up with psychiatrists and mental health professionals as parents and step-parents. With that background, they each have an intriguing perspective on people. Gordo tended to stay grounded in who he was when Lizzie and Miranda changed with what was popular. However, just like Cyrus, Gordo had times of conflict with who he was. As time went on, Cyrus grew more comfortable with himself as well. They were both loyal to their friends also. Each series even showed Gordo and Cyrus having a Bar Mitzvah and how both characters were interested in pursuing a film career.

7 Different: Popularity

In Andi Mack, popularity is referenced but never used to showcase massive differences between the main characters. However, cliques play a major role in Lizzie McGuire. Kate Sanders and Claire Miller rule the school. Cheerleading is the epitome of cool, and characters like Larry Tudgeman are at the bottom of the food chain. Clear differences show who is considered to be cool and who isn’t. Although Ethan doesn’t seem to be concerned with his popularity status, other characters consider him one of the cool kids.

What young teenager doesn’t go on a journey of self-discovery? One of the most relatable aspects of both shows is how they don’t shy away from allowing their characters to question the world around them and themselves.

Whether it be Lizzie, Miranda, Gordo or Andi, Buffy, Cyrus, and Jonah, everyone goes on a journey to become more comfortable with who they are or blossom into someone new.

5 Different: Ethan And Jonah

On the surface, Ethan and Jonah play similar roles. Each is the main crush of the central character, kind, and can be oblivious. But that’s about where the similarities end. For the most part, Ethan is a nice guy to Lizzie, Miranda, and Gordo, looking at them as his friends. But other than the occasional reference to what Ethan likes, it is clear he is a supporting character in Lizzie McGuire.

Jonah is far more developed, growing with each episode. Jonah’s interests aren’t the only thing the viewers learn about him, as details about his home life are eventually revealed and give Jonah more substantial storylines. Jonah always comes across more like his own person, while Ethan mostly feels like Lizzie’s crush.

4 Similar: Enemy Becomes Friend

Kate used to be Lizzie’s best friend…until she bought a bra. Afterward, Kate joined the ranks of the popular kids abandoning Lizzie, Miranda, and Gordo. Kate spends a majority of Lizzie McGuire as a bully to the trio. While there are brief moments where Kate and Lizzie come to a friendly understanding, they don’t truly reconcile until The Lizzie McGuire Movie. It seems Kate has turned over a new leaf by the film’s conclusion, but unfortunately, there was never a third season to confirm it. On Andi Mack, Amber was Jonah’s older girlfriend and did not like Andi. However, Amber and Andi eventually bonded and became friends.

3 Different: Series Finale

Lizzie McGuire concludes in Rome at the end of the film. However, there are still plenty of unanswered questions and unresolved things after the finale. Did Lizzie and Gordo start dating? Did Lizzie pursue singing in High School? Does Miranda stay in Mexico City? Do Lizzie and Kate become friends again? Those are just a few questions that are never resolved in the series.

Andi Mack, in comparison, concludes more satisfyingly. Andi, Cyrus, Buffy, and Jonah all have the final conversations about their relationships that need to be had. The show ends with a party, which could also be thought of as a celebration of the show. The series ends where it feels like their adventures would continue, but their on-screen journey was over.

2 Similar: Covered Mature Topics

These are two of the shows that trusted their audiences to understand the importance of mature subjects. Without talking down to the viewers, each show included storylines that were important and real to many people. Lizzie McGuire discussed stealing, body dysmorphia, eating disorders, insecurity, and gender roles. Meanwhile, Andi Mack tackled gun safety, LGBTQ+, teen pregnancy, anxiety, military parents, and racial stereotypes. Both shows are remembered for confronting mature topics.

1 Different: Animated Lizzie

One of the most massive differences between the two shows is Animated Lizzie. The animation acted as Lizzie’s conscience, inner thoughts, feelings, and comedic relief. Animated Lizzie was an understanding of how Lizzie felt about the events occurring in her life and how she planned to handle them. It was a unique aspect to Lizzie McGuire that no other Disney Channel show had. On Andi Mack, the characters would discuss their thoughts and feelings directly, or the viewers would get it from how they reacted to events.
