Love him or hate him, Squidward is one of the most recognizable and significant characters in cartoon history. While not exactly a stereotypical fountain of knowledge for kids in a kid’s show, Squidward being an antithesis of SpongeBob gives the show its own special character dynamics and unique brand of humor that rivals adult cartoons,’ a tough feat for kid’s cartoon.
Of course, Squidward is a mixed bag and unlike the genuinely well-meaning but clueless SpongeBob, he’s more agenda-driven. As a result, he’s done a lot of deeds both good and bad– mostly the latter, showing his egocentric and elitist side. Still, deep down, Squidward is a good guy, he just doesn’t want to show it because of his pride. Here are five examples of each extreme of Squidward’s moral spectrum.
10 SECRETLY GOOD: GENUINE CONCERN FOR SPONGEBOB
This one’s certainly not a secret to the viewers and is generally a known quality of Squidward due to how often he shows it. At the bottom of his inky heart, Squidward actually cares for SpongeBob– enough to stand up for him and even fight for his rights.
This is especially noticeable when Mr. Krabs sold SpongeBob for 62 cents and Squidward got angry. There was also that one time where Squidward smacked a pizza at a customer’s face after they berated SpongeBob. The list goes on to show just how Squidward secretly acts as a true friend to SpongeBob.
9 THE WORST: KICKING OUT A HOMELESS SpongeBob
Too bad Squidward can’t maintain the momentum of being nice to SpongeBob as his more sociopathic nature gets the best of him. When SpongeBob’s pineapple house gets destroyed, he tried to bunk up with Squidward only to get kicked out in the middle of the night right into the cold ocean floor.
What’s even more heartbreaking for SpongeBob is that he did the opposite for Squidward and even sheltered the cephalopod when he became homeless after quitting Krusty Krab. Goes to show just how destructively cynical and remorseless Squidward can get.
8 SECRETLY GOOD: HANDSOME SQUIDWARD REVERSAL
Squidward becoming handsome was a huge deal for him especially since he’s an artist. He quickly got the attention he wanted and even became a sensation with his music despite being a mediocre clarinet player. He soon discovered that not all that glitters is gold and life as a handsome creature can be taxing.
This was a humbling lesson for Squidward and he quickly wanted to revert back to his old self. He was even happy when it happened and didn’t seem to regret what he had lost, which displays just how content he is with his regular appearance. Needless to say, he’s happier with not being shallow or superficial. His heart’s in the right place with that one.
7 THE WORST: VIOLENT APRIL FOOLS PRANK
There’s no doubt that Squidward is the most neurotic character in SpongeBob Squarepants. He’s quick to anger & annoy and is also prone to mental breakdowns. That’s why he went overboard with one April Fools prank for SpongeBob.
It was a rather overkill prank that involved injuring SpongeBob and humiliating him several times over in front of Bikini Bottom. Sure, it might have been SpongeBob’s plan all along, but there’s no denying that Squidward’s schadenfreude humor is in poor taste.
6 SECRETLY GOOD: TOLERANCE FOR NONSENSE
Despite the neuroticism and his annoyance with SpongeBob and Patrick’s shenanigans or even with Mr. Krabs’ unfair treatment, Squidward deserves a world record award for patience. He puts up with Bikini Bottom’s nonsense every single day of his life.
It’s even more impressive when one considers his location, he’s practically stuck between two riots (SpongeBob and Patrick’s houses). Yet, there were only a couple of episodes where he tried to move out. The rest of the series, he stayed and endured.
5 THE WORST: RUINING A FRIENDSHIP
One of the worst things about being neighbors with two uber-optimistic dorks is the noise they create when they’re having fun. Too bad Squidward cannot stand this cacophony of happiness because of his sad life, so he had to share his negativity to the world.
He did this most destructively when he ruined SpongeBob and Patrick’s friendship in one episode. It was a surprisingly effective action and the two despised each other quickly all because Squidward can’t stand their joy. Thankfully, it backfired against Squidward.
4 SECRETLY GOOD: FORGIVING NATURE
One would think that Squidward, neurotic as he is, would hold a grudge against most citizens of Bikini Bottom after being the whole town’s figurative punching bag. However, he holds no such ill-intent and grievance towards SpongeBob, Patrick, or Mr. Krabs.
He might have some slight resentment but the stuff he’s been through because of them would have filled a regular person with hatred. Instead, Squidward seems to have forgiven most of their missteps towards him. He moves on in life and goes through each episode only to get slighted or ridiculed as the cycle continues.
3 THE WORST: MOOCHING OFF SPONGEBOB
The rock bottom for Squidward was when he resigned from Krusty Krab and hoped to become a football-playing king in space. Except that didn’t happen and he instead became a vagrant with no practical or professional skills. So SpongeBob, being a good friend, took him in and cared for him until he found a job.
Except Squidward never found a job and quickly descended into an ungrateful bum who took advantage of SpongeBob’s kindness and generosity. He even went as far as enslaving SpongeBob in his own house. Even SpongeBob noticed this and didn’t put up with it for it too long.
2 SECRETLY GOOD: PRETENDING TO BE SANTA CLAUS
As for Squidward’s most noble deed of unrecognized kindness? Being Santa Claus. It was Squidward at his nicest where he gave away everything dear to him (mostly house furnishings) just to complete SpongeBob and Bikini Bottom’s first Christmas.
Since he pretended to be Santa, all credit went to the plump pensioner and it was a mostly thankless act of goodwill from Squidward. Oddly enough, a hiding Santa was there all along and let it all happen, but he did voice out his gratitude to Squidward as a compensation of sorts.
1 THE WORST: NEARLY KILLED GARY
Finally, we see Squidward at his worst when he got an important responsibility thrust upon him by SpongeBob. All Squidward had to do was feed Gary for three days but he didn’t because he prioritized his sunbathing. As a result, Gary became sick and was probably close to death by starvation by the time SpongeBob came home. At the very least, Squidward had karmic judgment handed to him quickly by the end of that episode.
