5 Ways Tangled Is Better Than Brave (& 5 Why Brave Is)

The films Tangled and Brave, despite technically being created by two different studios (Disney and Pixar respectively), both feature official Disney princesses in their title roles. Rapunzel and Merida have indeed been some of the most recent additions to the Disney princess franchise, but what’s more interesting is the difference between their movies.

One is based on a classic fairy tale while the other is more ambiguous but is also related to European folklore. And yet, the two are often compared to each other. It’s difficult to tell which one is superior, but there are some key elements that could be assessed.

10 Tangled: The Characters

It’s inevitable that the protagonist, the antagonist, and possibly the love interest will be taking all of the audience’s attention throughout most of the runtime of any movie. But the supporting and background characters can often bring more charm to it.

Though Brave does feature some pretty distinct characters, Tangled’s cast of characters is just more memorable. The horse named Maximus, Rapunzel’s chameleon Pascal, the Snuggly Duckling’s guests, and the Stabbington brothers are all very different and easy to recall.

9 Brave: The Setting

Though taking place during completely different centuries, both Tangled and Brave are set in Europe. And even though both manage to create an atmosphere of their own, Brave’s setting is simply more mysterious and adventurous.

The forest is full of secrets while Merida’s home has many interesting locations of its own. The hut of the witch is particularly peculiar.

8 Tangled: Overall Success

It’s much easier to judge the two movies when it comes to overall success. Tangled grossed $592 million on a budget of $260 million while Brave grossed $540 million on a budget of $185 million.

In addition to that, Tangled holds a rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 7.50 while Brave holds a rating of 78% with an average score of 6.95.

7 Brave: The Atmosphere

As mentioned earlier, both movies managed to create their own unique atmospheres with Tangled relying more on adventure while Brave relied on mystery. And yet, there is one thing that makes Brave different.

This movie has a kind of a nostalgic twist or element to it ass it shows the kind of loving family environment that many people will probably remember from their childhood.

6 Tangled: The Jokes

Brave has plenty of jokes with many of the gags coming from Merida’s three unruly brothers terrorizing the inhabitants of the castle with their antics.

On the other hand, Tangled is filled with jokes throughout making it a more lighthearted story than Brave. From the running gag of Flynn’s nose being drawn incorrectly on posters to Rapunzel’s interactions with Pascal – all of it has at least a slight tinge of fun to it.

5 Brave: The Love Story

The love story is something most Disney princess movies focus on a lot, and Tangled is no exception to that. However, Brave has a much more interesting approach to the matter.

The main conflict springs from Merida not wanting to marry, and in the end, she doesn’t get a husband. Instead, it’s a love story between her and her mother, exploring mother-daughter relationships that don’t always run smoothly.

4 Tangled: The Villain

The main villain in Brave doesn’t truly come up later on in the film (despite scattered earlier appearances) making it difficult for the audience to truly understand the stakes as he is written off as a far-fetched legend until he appears.

But the villain is Tangled is revealed almost immediately with the viewers simply waiting for Rapunzel to realize who it really is. This is exactly why Mother Gothel is so terrifying – it’s someone who couldn’t be a close person in anyone’s life while actually being dangerous and toxic.

3 Brave: The Themes

Both movies are pretty much coming-of-age stories with either a mother or a mother figure being opposed to the protagonist in some way. Moreover, both stories explore what it means to get freedom and ways it can be harmful to young people.

And yet, the mother-daughter relationship is way more explored in Brave intensifying the conflict between the two and making the theme of family more pronounced. It really makes Merida’s and her mother’s accepting of each other’s views more impactful than anything else.

2 Tangled: The Visuals

Both Tangled and Brave do a great job with animation and visuals, but even though Brave was released two years after Tangled, Rapunzel’s movie actually looks somewhat more impressive.

It has more vibrant colors, both in the lighter and in the darker scenes with action sequences being particularly well-done. Though both movies did make their respective protagonists’ hair look particularly natural.

1 Brave: The Lore

Tangled is loosely based on the classic German fairy tale while Brave takes its inspirations from Scotland in different time periods and the classical tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

And even though Tangled does feel more grounded than an average fairy tale, Brave is likely to pique the audience’s interest as its lore is quite detailed with the fairy tale inspirations evident throughout.
