Warning! Spoilers for 5 Worlds: The Emerald Gate

Soon, the YA graphic novel series 5 Worlds will conclude with the fifth installment, The Emerald Gate. The sci-fi/fantasy story follows Oona, Jax, and An Tzu on one last adventure.

Joining beloved young adult graphic novels such as Bone and Amulet, 5 Worlds has invited readers of all ages to a fantastical world throughout each installment. Beginning with 5 Worlds: The Sand Warrior, the series was immediately compared to Star Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender. As the Five Worlds are threatened with extinction, three kids unite to save them. Oona Lee, An Tzu, and Jax Amboy use their distinct skills to restore life, utilizing magic to prevent the Five Worlds from going extinct.

5 Worlds: The Emerald Gate will end the series in an epic story written by Mark and Alexis Siegel, and illustrated by Xanthe Bouma, Matt Rockefeller, and Boya Sun. As the kid trio travel to Grimbo, they must solidify their quest to save the Five Worlds. The water-based planet will turn out to be the most dangerous place they have come across. The Emerald Gate releases on January 18, 2022. Publishers Weekly reviewed the final book with saying, “A dazzling interplanetary fantasy… that will easily appeal to fans of Naruto or Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Fellow creator Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet) also gave his praise for the series conclusion saying, “A magical journey, as fun as it is beautiful.”

While Oona, Jax, and An investigate the planet, they encounter Stan Moon again. Using lessons learned from The Sand Warrior, The Cobalt Prince, The Red Maze, and The Amber Anthem, the trio must make their extensive journey worth it as they approach the cumulation of everything. According to the synopsis, Moon’s strange connection to An is teased to similarly be answered. Promising twists and other subversions, 5 Worlds is ramping up for an exciting end.

With reviews hinting at the graphic novel’s satisfying conclusion to the series, it’s reassuring that it will stick the landing. Oona, Jax, and An will finally get the answers they have waited for, hopefully saving the 5 Worlds along the way. Their quest has seen them grow into young adult heroes, raising the question of what lies beyond the series after the last installment. 5 Worlds: The Emerald Gate will be available next year on January 18 in hardback format for 20.99, paperback format for 12.99, and an ebook format for 8.99.
