7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Boruto is the highly-acclaimed sequel to the anime classic series, Naruto. The series follows the next generation of ninjas from Konohagakure.

While Naruto was rife with war, Boruto struggles with a lot more otherworldly enemies and local unrest. Despite their differences, the new show has found its way into the hearts of fans.

The largest hurdle Boruto had to overcome was the many pre-established backstories it needed to incorporate into its storytelling.

The sequel about ninjas in the Land of Fire had much to live up to. Naruto was a world-wide hit.

Also, the last series ended with a lot of the war-worn shinobi finding love after so much suffering. This helped give Naruto a sweet, hopeful ending for the future.

It does leave Boruto with a lot of new families to handle, though.

As the show goes on, it displays how well those happily ever afters pan out, as well as adding some new relationships to bring love and hope to the story.

Those couples now have a few children that make up the core of the next generation of shinobi, the new ninjas shaping the world.

Some of these relationships have only grown sweeter with time and make Boruto a better show overall. Others, though, effect the show negatively.

Here are the 7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (and 9 That Saved It).

16 Saved: Naruto and Hinata

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Naruto and Hinata are the only reason why the series Boruto even exists. After all, the title character is their son.

The couple saves the anime for more reasons than that, though.

Hinata is the perfect mother to counter Naruto’s neglectful tendencies. She’s always there for her children.

While her husband is a pillar of strength and honor, Hinata is the one who supports her powerful family with all her might.

After all, her family may be strong, but they all need someone to care for and believe in them. And Naruto believes in Hinata, too, giving her the strength to be that supportive foundation.

Each character has their flaws, but the way Naruto and Hinata complement each other not only gives the show its main character but also gives it a well-functioning and well-matched adult relationship to center the show.

15 Hurt: Rock Lee and TenTen

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

When Boruto was announced, fans got glimpses at the next generation of ninjas. Many of the previous, beloved characters of Naruto parent members of the new class.

One a lot of people noticed was a character that looked quite a bit like Rock Lee, a fan favorite. From that, people assumed Rock Lee hooked up with his former teammate, TenTen, and they had a kid

. It excited a lot of people, as Naruto had left both ninjas single.

However, once the show started, Rock Lee was Metal Lee’s only recognized parent. Eventually, the creators confirmed that, though Rock and TenTen were close, Metal’s mom was somebody else.

This surprised fans, as they had expected another pair of adored ninjas to get together. Though the couple isn’t a thing, many devotees lament their unexplored relationship.

14 Saved: Sai and Ino

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

One of the roughest relationships in Naruto was between Sakura and her ex best friend, Ino. The two parted over a mutual interest in Sasuke.

However, when Sasuke turned evil, only Sakura’s love for him persisted. Ino instead found herself turning towards the new Team 7 member, Sai.

With one of the sweetest meet-cutes, where Sai calls her “Miss Beautiful,” Sai and Ino have been a breath of fresh air amongst the romantic turmoil around them.

In Boruto, that persists as the couple tackles business, parenthood, and life all while staying side by side.

They are two of the most patient, synchronized parents in the village. Together, Ino and Sai do a lot of good for the show.

13 Hurt: Kizashi and Mebuki

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Sakura’s parents, Hizashi and Mebuki, have quite a bit of explaining to do. First of all, they are rarely involved in Sakura’s ninja life during the original series.

This becomes harder for viewers to believe when, in an altered timeline, its revealed that Hizashi could have been Hokage.

This means that he’s quite strong and should have been much more interested in his daughter’s development as a shinobi.

More frustrating, though, is the fact neither of them voiced any discomfort with their daughter marrying a man who tried to end her life.

Hizashi and Mebuki hurt Boruto by being fairly negligent parents when it came to guiding their daughter down good paths.

Perhaps if they had done more, Sakura wouldn’t have ended up spending her life dedicated to a nearly non-existant marriage.

12 Saved: Boruto and Sumire

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Boruto makes some serious hints towards Boruto Uzamaki ending up with Sarada Uchiha. However, another girl shows interest in the powerful rebel: Sumire Kakei.

Sumire is a perfectionist and their class rep, but she also spent her childhood training, lying, and fostering her late father’s experiment: the monstrous Nue.

When Sumire finally releases the creature on the village, she’s determined to fulfill her father’s vengeful wishes.

Boruto comes after her, though, and forces her to acknowledge her feelings for her classmates. He convinces her to stop the attack and come back to her friends. Perhaps, even, to just try to live life like a normal girl.

Afterwards, Sumire has a crush on Boruto and announces this to Sarada, cementing a young love triangle between the three.

Her complex character and her admiration of Boruto make the show much more interesting.

11 Hurt: Kaguya and Tenji

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Kaguya falling in love with Tenji is the exact reason the ninjas of Naruto and Boruto have chakra.

However, she’s also the reason why the world almost ended. And, it seems, in Boruto she’ll be the cause of the world almost ending all over again.

Because of Kayuga’s prolonged time on earth, her relationship with Tenji, her attack on human-kind, all of these cascading events have led to Boruto having to face off against her clansmen, Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki.

When they go looking for her, that’s when they stumble upon this world of powerful shinobi and trouble begins.

All of the current big bads are because she fell in love with a human man, making the world of Boruto so much more dangerous.

10 Saved: Choji and Karui

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

During Naruto, “shipping” characters became an all too common fan hobby. As the ninja show only gave hints of romance, a lot of viewers tried to fill in the gaps themselves.

Some interesting pairings come out of this, ones that even the fans never expect to happen.

One of these included Choji and Karui. Choji was always self-conscious, but polite and caring. Karui had a hot-headed streak, but most of all she cared about the people she loved very much.

The character never officially interacted until Ino mentions them to Sakura in Sakura Hiden.

They’re unexpected, but they’re a good match. They are kind, doting, laid-back parents to their daughter, ChoCho.

Also, they are some of the first parents to note how unimportant ninja training might be during peace-time. Their perspective and fun daughter are great additions to Boruto.

9 Saved: Sasuke and Karin

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Ssuke Uchiha accumulated many obsessed admirers, and one of them was Karin. Her relationship with him was professional, but she always wanted more.

By Boruto, though, they have grown to become good friends only. After all, in the end, he did choose Sakura.

However, Karin’s obsession did lead her to be fiercely loyal to Sasuke, despite his atrocities. If it wasn’t for her adoration she would have left his side long before a friendship could bloom.

Her love for him literally saved Boruto because without her assistance and clinic, Sakura would have had to give birth alone in the woods.

Though she’s a strong ninja, even Sakura might not have made it out of that one. Because of Karin’s relationship with Sasuke, Sarada Uchiha is healthy, alive, and one of the best characters on the show.

8 Hurt: Kiba and Tamaki

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Kiba was one of the original nine rookies from Naruto. He and his dog Akumaru were a formidable duo as well as fan favorites.

Tamaki was a background character for a large chunk of the series, first working at a shop in an abandoned village with her grandmother, and later moving to Konoha with her cats.

They meet when she moves to Konoha and are quickly smitten with one another. By Boruto, they live together with their many animals.

The problem with this couple isn’t their existence, but the fact that they are sweet, kind, and adorable, but are generally uninvolved in the story.

They live together and raise animals, but they weren’t given a child like many other couples, and are consequently left out.

It hurts the show to leave such a sweet couple out of the core cast.

7 Saved: Asuma and Kurenai

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Asuma and Kurenei were a beloved couple from Naruto, two ninja leaders who fell in love. Their love story ended, though, when Asuma passed away in battle.

The couple is very important to Boruto, though, because they gave birth to a fan-favorite character: Mirai Sarutobi.

By the next generation’s beginning, Mirai has become an accomplished ninja, a mentor to Shikadai Naru, and a formidable guardian of Hokages.

Mirai is serious, dedicated, and loyal. Other ninjas often want her to loosen up, but her rigid devotion is part of her charm.

Mirai simply wants to be the best ninja she can be and make Shikamaru, her psuedo-brother, and her late father proud.

She’s a stoic soldier with a heart of gold. Her parent’s relationship gave fans the gift of her wonderful presence.

6 Hurt: Sumire and Magire

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Sumire is a fascinating and complex character. Magire, instead of being complex, is just creepy. In Boruto, he shows his affections for Sumire by stalking her.

Later, he leaves her creepy notes and attacks her friends. Granted, the second half was under possession, but he still starts off quite uncomfortable.

The Naruto series have never been that great at showing unrequited love, as Sakura, Naruto, and many other admirers were intense, overbearing, and uncomfortable.

However, Magire’s feelings for Sumire take the cake. While generally well-meaning, he still decides to follow her around and make others uncomfortable.

This botched one-sided relationship only serves to make Magire a terrible trope of a “nice guy,” and does nothing to develop Sumire at all.

Overall, it only serves to hurt the show.

5 Saved: Orochimaru and Science

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Orochimaru is not the one for romantic relationships. However, his adoration and devotion to science and his experiments is as close to true love as he’ll ever get. As a mad scientist ninja, it’s actually quite fitting.

While Orochimaru’s work has hurt others in the past, it has created one of the best parts of Boruto: Mitsuki. Mitsuki is Orochimaru’s synthetic son.

He’s delightful, well-meaning, strong, and an all around great character. Having an insane, genius father who actually cares for him (mostly) makes him even more interesting.

In the case of Boruto, Orochimaru’s love affair with science has served the show for the better. After all, where would the new Team 7 be without their friend Mitsuki?

4 Hurt: Sasuke and Sakura

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Sakura and Sasuke’s relationship has always been an odd one. There is strength ot it, as it did stand the test of corrupting darkness, time, and war.

Also, of course, they gave birth to Sarada Uchiha, one of the best characters in Boruto.

However, that’s about where the good things stop.

Sakura is completely at the mercy of her husband’s decisions. Sasuke is never around. Sarada is confused and conflicted by her parent’s lack of affection and near-constant separation.

While Sarada is fantastic, their relationship in Boruto only seems to bring more hardship and suffering than it brings joy.

Sasuke and Sakura may be something that built from the beginning of Naruto, but it’s something that just doesn’t quite work.

This couple’s time in Boruto only shows how much they don’t fit, and hurts the show in turn.

3 Saved: Shikamaru and Temari

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Both Temari and Shikamaru are no-nonsense, stoic, and determined ninjas. They have their own ways of going about their demeanor, Shikamaru with indifference and Temari with bluntness, but both have softer hearts at their core.

This is why it’s so endearing to fans the way the two bring out the softer sides of each other.

Besides being adorable, Temari and Shikamaru also created one of the coolest characters in Boruto: Shikadai.

Like his parents, Shikadai is calculating, confident, and strong. He takes from his father a strong tacticical strength and unenthusiastic personality.

From his mother, he’s adopted her outspoken nature and protectiveness over people he cares for. Shikadai is a fantastic friend and rival for Boruto.

Temari and Shikamaru’s loving and complementary relationship helped warm fans hearts and make one of their favorite new ninjas.

2 Hurt: Orochimaru and Science

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Orochimaru’s marriage to science is a double-edged sword, of course. While it created Mitsuki, it also causes hordes of trouble.

Without it, Sasuke might be less of a strange, distant, scarred husband and father. Also, perhaps one of his experiments (Shin Uchiha) might have not tried to casually kidnap Sarada.

For as much good his experiments do, Orochimaru will always cause just as much, if not more, evil. In Boruto, he has created a great ninja in his son.

However, he’s also caused far more road blocks and dangers that the young ninjas otherwise would not have to face.

He may be better than his Sound Village days, but he never will be good. This fact alone means that anything he does will always, in some way, end up hurting people, too.

1 Saved: Boruto and Sarada

7 Couples That Hurt Boruto (And 9 That Saved It)

Boruto and Sarada are hardly canon, but they have been implied to have crushes on one another. The pair initially don’t get along, though.

Sarada is very dedicated, disciplined, and serious about her future. Boruto is rebellious, unfocused, and unsure of who he’ll become.

However, once they’re forced to work with one another, they gain a respect for each other that’s incorrigible.

Boruto even says that when Sarada becomes Hokage, he’ll be the one to protect her. Sarada herself blushes at that one.

Currently, the pair are young and haven’t developed romantically. Despite that, protecting her is the first thing Boruto has ever said about his future. Boruto brings more strength out of her, and Sarada brings focus and purpose out of him.

Without falling in love yet, they are already one of the strongest couples of the series.
