9 Best Pirates Of The Caribbean Monsters

One of the successful franchises of all time, Pirates Of The Caribbean has spawned five films with a sixth on the way. Across those five films, audiences have been introduced to many unforgettable characters, including Captain Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, as they go on wild journeys.

It’s on these adventures across the seven seas that the audience encounters many monsters of legendary status. From fantasy creatures to supernatural pirates, many of these monsters leave their impact on the franchise.

9 The Crew Of Zombies

Of all the magically imbued crews of the franchise, Blackbeard’s zombie crew are certainly the weakest but that doesn’t mean they are bad. They are creepy with designs that can drive anyone to itch due to the impressive makeup. The zombie master himself George A. Romero would likely be proud of these zombies.

They show strength and seem to be indestructible which certainly gives them an edge. However, they lack the personality and impact that other crews have had in other movies.

8 Mermaids

Blackbeard heads across Whitecap Bay in search of the Fountain Of Youth. Of course, nothing is ever easy in Pirates Of The Caribbean, so the bay is under the watch of mermaids. At first, they seem like playful, flirtatious, and beautiful creatures of the sea but they turn out to be even more deadly than the zombies they are fighting.

They tear through boats as if they were paper, display sharp fangs and claws, and can leap out of the water. They seek to drown their enemies.

7 Edward “Blackbeard” Teach

9 Best Pirates Of The Caribbean Monsters

He may not be a literal monster but Edward Teach’s mastery of his mystic sword and his ruthless nature are what make him a monster. Teach is the legendary Blackbeard, who is based on the real-life figure, and he is willing to go to any lengths to defy the prophecy that leads to his own death.

He even is willing to have his own daughter die to obtain immortality. Combined with an eerie performance from Ian McShane, Blackbeard proved to be a standout villain in an otherwise lackluster entry of the series.

6 Ghost Sharks

Thanks to the B-movie side of the SyFy channel, there have been all kinds of weird sharks: sand sharks, two-headed sharks, even sharks in a hurricane but Disney showed what happens when sharks come back as ghosts. Javier Bardem’s Capitan Salazar sends three of these ghost sharks to kill Jack Sparrow.

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the three sharks from Pixar’s Finding Nemo, these sharks have one of the best scenes in Dead Men Tell No Tales. A hammerhead, a mako, and a great white shark are brought to life as mangled corpses through impressive CGI, marking the only time sharks were a threat in the films.

5 Ghosts Of The Devil’s Triangle

9 Best Pirates Of The Caribbean Monsters

Usually, the evil crews are pirates but in this movie, Salazar and his crew are pirate hunters. With a personal vendetta against Jack Sparrow. These hunters died in the Devil’s Triangle, cursing them to become ghosts. Though they cannot step on land, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Their ship can destroy and swallow other ships whole, they cannot be harmed in any way, and are relentless in their pursuit. What also makes them stand out as villains is their design, all of them floating in a fashion that makes them look like they are always in the water. They are all mutilated and are made up of only a few body parts.

4 The Kraken

The full design of this creature is never shown and that is one of the best things. Much of the Kraken is left as a mystery for the audience, thus making it scarier. The most the audience sees are its tentacles and its mouth of a million teeth as it destroys ships and even kills Captain Jack Sparrow.

The Kraken is the pet of Davy Jones and can be summoned to destroy anything, making an impact fitting for such a legendary monster of the sea. The only flaw with the monster is that it was killed between films.

3 The Flying Dutchman Crew

9 Best Pirates Of The Caribbean Monsters

Bound to the Flying Dutchman, extending their death sentence for years or even centuries, the crew of Davy Jones share his fate as cursed mutants. Since they do not follow their duties as guides of dead spirits, they all mutate into creatures resembling the flora and fauna of the sea.

They are incredibly portrayed via CGI, all of them cruel and monstrous due to their evil captain. When they live long enough on the ship, they fuse with the walls and ceilings, becoming part of the vessel. Not all of the creatures are evil though as shown by Bootstrap Bill who is willing to defy Davy Jones to save his son.

2 The Cursed Crew

Though Hector Barbossa proves himself to be a hero in the sequels, he was the original villain that started it all. The crew of the Black Pearl all took gold coins from an Aztec chest and, as a result, they become unfeeling skeletal creatures that are revealed in the moonlight.

Not only is it slightly creepy for a Disney film but even years later, the CGI still holds up. Skeleton pirates were the perfect first monster for a Pirates Of The Caribbean film. Combine them with many memorable personalities and the undead crew remains an iconic band of villains.

1 Davy Jones

Bill Nighy’s unforgettable motion-capture performance as Davy Jones remains as celebrated as Josh Brolin’s Thanos from the MCU. From the moment, Davy Jones appears, he makes a great splash and remains the main villain for two movies.

The CGI that brings his octopus face, crustacean arm, and coral outfit to life is nothing short of astonishing. On top of that, Davy Jones is a cruel villain who torments everyone in his way and his lack of a heart (literally in this case) makes him a monster both inside and out. It’s because of him and his cruelty that his crew is cursed.
