The Dark Souls series is renowned for its expansive lore-driven narrative design. There are usually multiple paths through a game’s central campaign and numerous endings depending upon the player’s choices. Along the way, gamers will also encounter a host of side quests — optional missions and encounters that can provide exposition about the world, reward the player with rare or high-tier items and weapons, or unlock additional narrative content.
Building off this narrative structure pioneered in Demon’s Souls, developer FromSoftware has included numerous side quests in the second installment in the Souls series, Dark Souls. Though not all of these missions rise to the nuance and polish of those found in later games, all of them are eminently memorable and shouldn’t be missed by any devoted franchise fan.
9 The Honorless Knight of Carim
Locked in a cell in the Undead Parish, players who find the Mystery Key have the opportunity to free Knight Lautrec of Carim. Descriptions on his armor reveal that he was a patron of Fina, a minor goddess associated with protection miracles. Players will next find him at Firelink Shrine, where he will gift players with the Sunlight Medal if they helped him escape. Though he can be summoned to help battle the Bell Gargoyles and Gaping Dragon, this golden knight is not to be trusted. After ringing the Bell of Awakening, he will kill Anastacia the Fire Keeper. He can be brought to justice after a difficult fight in Anor Londo, which yields the player a Black Eye Orb, Anastacia’s robes, and the Fire Keeper’s Soul.
8 Praise the Sun
The NPC behind the Dark Souls franchise’s most enduring meme, Solaire of Astora is one of the game’s most memorable characters. This jovial knight intentionally became Undead to visit Lordran and, “seek his own sun.” While even Dark Souls loremasters are unclear exactly what this means, Solaire cheerfully requests the Chosen Undead’s help and introduces them to the ever-helpful summoning mechanic.
After speaking with him in Undead Burg, players belonging to the Chaos Servant Covenant will have the opportunity to fight a horde of Chaos Bugs in the shortcut to Lost Izalith. The final bug will drop the Sunlight Maggot — a unique golden helmet that shines like the sun. If this enemy is not killed, Solaire will be found wearing the helmet, possessed by the metallic parasite, and hostile toward the player. If he is saved by the Chosen Undead’s intervention, however, he will be available as a valuable ally against the game’s final boss. Unlike other summonable NPCs who appear as transparent phantoms in battle, Solaire appears in the flesh for this climactic fight, rendering him one of the most heroic NPCs in the Dark Souls franchise.
7 Patronize the Crestfallen Warrior
The Crestfallen Warrior is one of the first non-player characters to appear in Dark Souls. For the majority of the game, this distraught knight simply sits in Firelink Shrine, offering bits of advice and obscure exposition about the world. When the primordial serpent Kingseeker Frampt arrives at the shrine, however, the Crestfallen Warrior leaves in disgust, only to be found hostile and Hollowed in the New Londo Ruins.
Though he does not have as much depth as other side quests in Dark Souls, the Crestfallen Warrior is quite elegant as a narrative device. He presents the player with an alternate version of themselves that has given up hope in the face of adversity, thereby promoting perseverance through the game’s many challenges.
6 Aid the Knights of Catarina
The iconic Knights of Catarina appear in each Dark Souls game and represent some of the series’ most enduring characters. Players first meet Siegmeyer at Sen’s Fortress, but his quest truly begins in Anor Londo. Pinned down by a troop of Silver Knights, some of Dark Souls’ most annoying enemies, he will request the Chosen Undead’s aid. If the player obliges, the knight will make his way to Blighttown, where he will ask for help in finding his daughter, Sieglinde.
After rescuing her from a Golden Crystal Golem in the Crystal Caves, players will find Siegmeyer in Lost Izalith, besieged by Chaos Eaters and calling for the player’s help once more. It’s a tricky fight, for if Siegmeyer loses more than half of his health, he will succumb to his wounds and die before he can reunite with his daughter. Survive in fighting spirits, however, and Sieglinde will bestow the Chosen Undead with a valuable Titanite Slab used for upgrading weapons.
5 The Feud of House Thorolund
This side quest can only be found after defeating the Capra Demon, one of Dark Souls’ most difficult boss fights. Rhea and the Cleric Petrus are members of a noble family on a clandestine mission to kindle bonfires in the Catacombs. This quest, however, is ill-fated, and Rhea will disappear. Petrus explains that she has become trapped in the Tomb of Giants, but offers no further help.
In the tomb, the Chosen Undead must defeat Rhea’s Hollowed bodyguards, after which she will become a merchant of miracles in the Undead Church. Upon returning to Petrus, his murderous intent toward Rhea is revealed and he will fight the player. Defeat this traitor and purchase all of Rhea’s miracles while avoiding any boss fights to complete this quest and ensure she survives.
4 Freeing Big Hat Logan
Like Lautrec of Carim, the wizard Big Hat Logan is first encountered by the Chosen Undead imprisoned. Free him from Sen’s Fortress, and he will reveal an obsession with the magic of Seath the Scaleless and become a sorcery merchant. Some of the strongest sorceries in the game can be purchased from Big Hat Logan, such as the Soul Spear and Homing Crystal Soulmass.
After his inventory is exhausted, however, the wizard will become corrupted by his thirst for arcane knowledge and can be fought in a Hollowed form in Seath’s boss arena. Defeat him, and players will be rewarded with Logan’s namesake Big Hat, the Tin Crystallization Catalyst, and the White Dragon Breath spell.
3 Break Havel the Rock
There is no narrative to this side quest apart from item lore, and the mission itself is no more than a single fight near the Taurus Demon’s boss arena. Despite this, the battle with Havel the Rock represents one of Dark Souls’ greatest challenges. Lore suggests that Havel was once a bishop and knight of Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, who carved his iconic armor and shield from solid stone.
He also wields a hybrid sword and club hewn from a dragon’s tooth that is capable of devastating low-leveled players. Even series veterans are advised to approach this fight with caution, as Havel holds a reputation as one of the most challenging NPC fights in the Soulsborne series.
2 Downing the Black Dragon
After defeating the Knight Artorias in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, players can encounter a giant archer named Hawkeye Gough near the Battle of Stoicism Gazebo. One of Gwyn’s four knights, the archer now passes his imprisoned days making wooden carvings with monkish focus.
Speaking with him after encountering Kalameet the Black Dragon, however, will prompt Hawkeye to offer his assistance in defeating the great drake. At the Chosen Undead’s command, the giant archer will shoot down Kalameet, enabling a grueling boss fight. Victorious players will be rewarded with Gough’s Greatbow, one of the strongest ranged weapons in the game.
1 Laurentius of the Great Swamp
Like the Crestfallen Warrior, Laurentius of the Great Swamp doesn’t have much narrative to his questline. He is first found, humorously, trapped in a barrel by a Butcher in the Depths of Undead Burg. A pyromancer, Laurentius becomes increasingly obsessed with the Chosen Undead’s sorceries after upgrading them with Quelana of Izalith. The player can choose to disclose to him the source of their fiery abilities, but this will result in him becoming a Hollowed enemy within Blighttown. Keep him alive, however, and he’ll become an invaluable pyromancy merchant in Firelink Shrine, second only to Quelana.
