10 Fun Horror Movies To Watch After Freaky

Many creators say that the two most difficult genres to work in are horror and comedy. Both rely on hitting just the right note with the audience. If that note is missed, then both creators and viewers alike are left wanting more in a way that other genres can easily smooth over.

With this in mind, making a horror-comedy is a truly difficult task as a creator, as hitting all those right notes can be hard for even the most seasoned writers and directors. Freaky was released on VOD on December fourth of this year and hopes to join the pantheon of the great horror-comedies, but, to get the absolute most out of it, it’s important to remember some of the classics which proceeded it.

10 Clue (1985)

A fan favorite and a cult classic to the max, Clue is a black comedy based on the board game of the same name—or, as it’s known outside North America, Cluedo. Clue has a star-studded cast of some of the era’s best comedians, as well, featuring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, and Christopher Lloyd.

One of the most exciting parts of Clue is that there are three different possible endings. Viewers watching Clue at home now can watch all of the endings, or pick just one, like a choose-your-own-adventure.

9 Poltergeist (1982)

Many consider Poltergeist to be a straight-up horror movie, while still others watch it as a comedy film. Some moments in the film can straddle the line of one or the other, but the film’s lighthearted air truly does make this into a fun horror movie at the genre’s best.

Written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor, and directed by Tobe Hooper, this haunted house movie has become a classic in the forty years since its release, and has spawned an entire franchise in the process.

8 Scream (1996)

Much like Clue, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream is a whodunnit and a black comedy, all wrapped up in one deliriously fun horror movie. Scream not only satirized the horror movies that came before it, but it ended up being a trope maker in and of itself for satirization, serving as inspiration for other fun horror films like Scary Movie.

With the fifth movie in the Scream franchise coming out soon, also named Scream, there’s no better time to revisit Scream than after watching Freaky.

7 What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

A more recent addition to the fun horror movie lexicon, What We Do in the Shadows is a shining example of a mockumentary done right. Created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), this horror-comedy follows a group of vampires living together in New Zealand.

Besides being a hilarious and wonderful movie, What We Do in the Shadows has also spawned its own TV shows: Wellington Paranormal and What We Do in the Shadows, for further enjoyment.

6 Edward Scissorhands (1990)

One of Tim Burton’s best, Edward Scissorhands is a controversial movie in the land of horror films. Some consider the movie to be a romance, some consider it a drama, some call it straight-up fantasy, and some call it lighthearted horror. As is the case with most, if not all, of Tim Burton’s work, Edward Scissorhands is a little bit of everything, and cannot exactly be placed in any specific genre box.

Winona Ryder, of course, stands out as she so often does in every movie she’s in, not just the horror films. In the end, the light yet complicated horror of Edward Scissorhands makes this movie both fun and horrifying in equal measure.

5 Shaun of the Dead (2004)

More classically comedic than classically horrific, Shaun of the Dead is one of the most well-liked horror-comedy films of the 2000s. This Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg movie is the first in their famous Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, along with Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World’s End (2013).

While Hot Fuzz is more of an action-comedy, and The World’s End is a sci-fi-comedy, Shaun of the Dead kicks the trilogy off with a fun zombie slasher starring Nick Frost alongside Pegg.

4 The Addams Family (1991)

While the making of The Addams Family was an outrageous disaster and terribly over budget, the end product has an excellence that cannot be denied. Even as the movie approaches its thirtieth birthday, audiences still love this lighthearted and loving film about a macabre family just living their lives.

The cast is spot-on incredible, too: the late Raul Julia as Gomez Addams still steals hearts today, and Anjelica Huston was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Morticia Addams. The Addams Family and its sequel, Addams Family Values (1993), are delightfully fun horror movies.

3 The Babysitter (2017)

The Babysitter is an incredibly recent movie, and yet it is already incredibly popular with fans of horror comedies. Directed by McG (This Means War), The Babysitter, and its even more recent sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020), are Netflix originals with a twist on an old trope.

These movies explore what happens when the babysitter, Bee, played by horror star Samara Weaving (Mayhem, Ready or Not), doesn’t protect her charge, but instead turns on him. In turn both sentimental and humorous, The Babysitter is a fun new horror movie to check out.

2 Heathers (1998)

In perhaps the definitive black comedy about teens, Heathers combines the truly heinous with the truly hilarious to create a cult classic that persists decades after release. This is the film debut for director Michael Lehmann and writer Daniel Waters (Batman Returns), as well as another production by Denise Di Novi (The Nightmare Before Christmas).

Despite this, the movie is perhaps best known for the performances from its two stars, Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Heathers has since become a stage musical and a television show, as well.

1 Beetlejuice (1988)

An 80s classic, Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton as the titular poltergeist, has seen success after success since its release over thirty years ago. Keaton isn’t alone in this movie, being just part of an incredibly well-cast ensemble that includes Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin.

All of them bring Tim Burton’s madness to life in a hilarious and still heart-warming way. Fans who enjoyed Beetlejuice have a bit more content to enjoy, as the movie spawned a delightful animated television show, several video games, and a recent (and excellent) Broadway musical.
