90 Day Fiancé Setting Wrong Example by Featuring Unemployed Cast

Several 90 Day Fiancé cast members are jobless, which is concerning. One must ask, is the franchise trying to normalize this problematic behavior?

90 Day Fiancé fans have often wondered why most of the cast members on the show don’t have a stable income source. Half of the couples are fighting and separating because of one crucial problem – unemployment – and the hardships that come with it. Showcasing and glamorizing such a sloppy attitude on national television is not ideal because it sends the wrong message to the audience. Believe it or not, viewers do get influenced by what they see on reality TV.

Let’s talk about some recent examples from the 90 Day Fiancé franchise in which some cast members are unable to take care of their families because they are jobless. Andrei Castravet from 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After married American-native Elizabeth and now has a baby girl, Eleanor. Viewers see that he has been out of a job for quite some time. He has so many responsibilities to take care of, but still, it doesn’t seem like he is doing enough to support his family, which eventually creates a wedge between his wife and in-laws. Moreover, he feels entitled enough to ask his father-in-law to pay for his second wedding in Moldova. By promoting such negligent lifestyles on the show, many viewers can get an idea that not having a job is common.

Another example is Jihoon from 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way who doesn’t earn enough to take care of his family. His wife, Deavan, left her life in America and traveled to South Korea to be with him. The 29-year-old falsely claimed that he can take care of his family of four people. He has a criminal history, massive debts, two kids to raise, and not enough source of making money. Similar is the case with other contestants like Sumit from India, Syngin Colchester and Paul Staehle. Now, we are forced to think if this show is trying to normalize this lackadaisical behavior. Some might argue that these cast members do get a paycheck from TLC. But that is not enough to survive in the long term. A cast member gets around $1,000 for shooting one episode, and this deal is only valid for American natives. Foreigners who do not have a work permit aren’t eligible to get paid. Unemployment may be part of the act for the cameras, and it helps build tension and drama between the couple as well as their respective families. But let’s not have so many stories with the same problematic behavior.

Well, we really wish TLC would improve their casting criteria. The casting crew needs to stop popularizing people who are reluctant to make efforts and have healthy lives with their partners. For a change, viewers would want to see couples overcoming challenges that are different than unemployment. It’s high time 90 Day Fiancé should stop setting wrong examples.
