The entire cast of 9-1-1 is made up of intelligent characters. Being able to come up with quick fixes during fast-paced and high-pressure situations is a requirement for all first responders. Everyone on the team has their own thought process, and their different points of view allow them to work together to find the best solution.

What characters lack in one area, they make up for in another. Whether they’re an emergency operator, police officer, firefighter, or even a TV news reporter, each job requires a certain level of discernment. There are some characters, in particular, who depend on their cleverness to rescue others from dire circumstances.

10 Abby Clark

While Abby left 9-1-1 after season 1, she still manages to save hundreds of lives during her time as an emergency operator. First responders can’t arrive at a scene immediately, and there isn’t always time to wait for them to show up.

Abby talks callers through their emergencies and goes above and beyond to help them. There are several situations in which she solves their problem before help has even arrived. She proves that she’s just as competent out in the field when she helps Buck save a child who’s in danger of being electrocuted.

9 Bobby Nash

Being the captain of the firehouse requires a special skill set, which, thankfully, Bobby has. He’s in charge of his team’s lives, as well as those they’re rescuing. Bobby makes calls that others don’t always agree with, but he has consistently solid reasoning behind them.

Coming up with a plan that ensures his firefighters’ and the community’s safety is no easy feat, and given the time-crunch they’re usually under, there’s not much of an opportunity to brainstorm. However, Bobby always knows exactly what needs to be done.

8 May Grant

May’s age makes her an especially impressive character. She becomes an emergency operator right after graduating high school and has dedicated her life to helping people just like her mom. Even when she played a minor role in the show, May was portrayed to be intuitive.

She cares deeply about social justice issues and wants to do what she can to make the world a better place. May saves people every day at work and uses all the resources at her disposal to keep callers breathing until help arrives. If it weren’t for her quick-thinking, a young boy would have died after his ventilator lost power.

7 Taylor Kelly

Taylor is a new addition to the main cast, but in season 2 she had a short fling with Buck (whose return to firefighting fans hope to see in 9-1-1 season 3). Giving her a bigger role is the right call, as Taylor offers a new perspective and a unique voice.

Instead of being directly involved in emergency situations, she reports them to the public. Taylor isn’t like the other news anchors in the series, and she’s passionate about discovering the truth. She uses her connections to help the community and refuses to rest until she cracks a case.

6 Evan Buckley

There are times when Buck doesn’t think before he speaks, and 9-1-1 derives much of its humor from his impulsiveness. No matter how often his friends poke fun at him, Buck is one of the smartest characters on the show.

He’s so determined to save lives that he acts first and thinks later, and is commonly reprimanded by Bobby for being reckless. Buck doesn’t always give enough thought to his plans, which makes how successful they are even more impressive.

5 Athena Grant

There’s nothing Athena can’t do when she puts her mind to it. She has a never-ending amount of skills at her disposal, and there are still several things fans don’t know about Athena in 9-1-1. Athena’s impressive fighting abilities often get her out of danger, yet she’s faced with plenty of problems that can’t be solved with brute force.

She patrols alone and depends on her own senses to warn her of danger. Athena often receives help from other officers and first responders, but for the most part, she gets everything done on her own.

4 Eddie Diaz

Eddie has a wide range of skills and usually takes charge during emergencies that require a more extreme level of physical fitness. However, one of the biggest signs of his intelligence is his previous job as an army medic in Afghanistan.

Chimney and Hen are the paramedics of the 118, but when they aren’t around, Eddie is able to come through and provide the necessary medical expertise. He rescues victims from dangerous situations and patches them up afterward.

3 Howard Han

Howie, who is most commonly referred to as Chimney, is one of the most likable characters in 9-1-1. Whether it’s on the job or at home with his family, he always puts the needs of others over the needs of himself.

Chimney is the only one who can even hold a torch to Bobby when it comes to leading the team. Although he sometimes lacks confidence, Chimney is more than capable of coming up with a plan and seeing it through. He fills in for Bobby as captain of the firehouse and surprises even himself.

2 Henrietta Wilson

When Hen and Chimney work side by side as a paramedic duo, they’re unstoppable. They both give everything they have to the patients in their care and refuse to give up as long as there’s hope. As important as being a firefighter is to her, Hen wants to continue to climb the totem pole.

She decides to go back to medical school to become a doctor, and her dedication is impressive. Hen faces plenty of challenges while balancing her work-life, school-life, and home-life, but she manages to excel at all three.

1 Maddie Buckley

The cast doesn’t feel complete until Maddie Buckley joins in 9-1-1 season 2. Her medical background allows her to take her job as a 9-1-1 operator a step further, and she comes up with innovative fixes during emergencies.

Maddie considers every possible solution to a problem and doesn’t give up until she finds one that works. She’s a quick-thinker even off the clock and is able to give Howie a secret message when the call center is ambushed by gunmen.
