A New SpiderMan Goes Beyond Peter Parker With A New Creative Team

In a new announcement from Marvel Comics, Spider-Man will soon go beyond Peter Parker and into a new era with Amazing Spider-Man #75. With Nick Spencer’s run on Spider-Man coming to a close, a dynamic journey is about to begin with a new creative team that will see the return of Ben Reilly’s Scarlet Spider, seeking to claim the mantle of Spider-Man once more in Spider-Man Beyond.

Ben Reilly has long been a fan-favorite hero, being a clone of Peter Parker created by The Jackal in The Clone Saga storyline. For a time he even took over as Spider-Man when Peter Parker wanted to retire. However, he’s died and been resurrected quite a bit, though not every resurrection into a new clone body has been great for the Scarlet Spider. While his first death was by the hands of the Green Goblin (coincidentally 1996’s Amazing Spider-Man #75), he was soon killed and resurrected several times as the Jackal tried to perfect his cloning process, so much so that the Dead No More storyline saw him becoming the new Jackal as a villain with a broken mind. However, he’s since become more of an anti-hero around the time of Spider-Geddon, and his latest resurrection has seen him operating low-key in New York before joining Iron Man’s team to fight the villain Korvac.

Now, Marvel has announced Spider-Man Beyond, coming from a new creative team featuring Kelly Thompson, Saladin Ahmed, Cody Ziglar, Patrick Gleason, and Zeb Wells, picking up after the upcoming Sinister War and a major (perhaps final) confrontation with the villain Kindred. Amazing Spider-Man #74 marks the end of Nick Spencer’s run that began in 2018, and Amazing Spider-Man #75 will reportedly see Ben Reilly’s Scarlet Spider attempting to take the reins from the classic Webslinger: “Backed by the Beyond Corporation, the captivating clone of Peter Parker is determined to be the best version of Spider-Man there ever was.” However, the announcement and released teaser images potentially indicate that taking the mantle of Spider-Man could come at the cost of Peter Parker’s life.

According to Marvel Editor Nick Lowe, the idea of Ben Reilly being able to achieve more than Peter Parker is what sold him on this upcoming storyline:

“The whole point of working on Spider-Man is trying to put new unliftable weights on top of him—physical, metaphysical, emotional, psychological—and seeing if he can lift them. But what if that weight truly is too heavy? What if someone with the exact same skills and formative years could do better? Ben Reilly is back and, with Aunt May and Uncle Ben’s lessons in the back of HIS mind as well, he’s here to step in where Peter Parker failed. Can he accomplish things the original Spider-Man never could?”

All things considered, Spider-Man Beyond does seem to be an intriguing premise, almost like a more positive version of Superior Spider-Man where Doc Ock’s mind was in Spider-Man’s body, motivating him to be better than Parker albeit with darker methods. In any case, seeing Ben Reilly becoming Spider-Man again should prove to be fairly exciting, as well as the mystery behind the Beyond Corporation that will seemingly be supporting him. However, one would hope that this new era isn’t coming on the heels of Peter Parker’s funeral.

Amazing Spider-Man #75 will be coming to comic book stores this October.
