Barclay Stockett is one of the many American Ninja Warrior contestants you can see competing on season 13. She joined the show in season eight and has since made history multiple times. But what is Barclay’s life like outside of the popular competition show?

Standing at five feet tall, Barclay became the shortest athlete to climb the 14 ½ foot Warped Wall and to conquer the Jumping Spider. She then went on to become the second woman to complete the Crank It Up obstacle. Though she hasn’t taken part in every season, Barclay was a mentor for the 9/10-year-old division of the first two seasons of American Ninja Warrior Junior. She also represented Team USA during the USA vs the World special.

Outside of ANW, Barclay is a gymnastics coach from Dayton, Texas. Prior to her appearance on ANW, she was a gymnast for six years, but stopped once she reached level 10. After retiring from gymnastics, she tried parkour and trapeze, but didn’t find the perfect fit until she found her first ninja gym. “It was like a playground for adults,” she told ESPN. “It was never about the show for me, but about having fun and exercising at the same time.” Her nickname was given to her after her gymnastics students would mispronounce her first name. She then concluded she loved things that sparkle, and thus, the Sparkly Ninja was born.

The 26-year-old has over 85K followers on Instagram and over 7K on Twitter. She describes herself as an adventurer, poet, nomad, and man-loving feminist. She told Instagram she is bisexual and is in a relationship with fellow ninja, Tee Jackson, or as she calls her, “The surprise of my life.” “I never expected I would actually fall in love with my best friend, but here we are,” she wrote. The two share Norah Joy, a miniature Schnauzer described as playful, needy, and clumsy.

Barclay has competed on American Ninja Warrior five times, missing season 12 due to her mother’s death from breast cancer. She returned to the show during the current season, season 13, still dealing with the loss of her mother. Before she began, she was visibly emotional and holding back tears. She made it to the last bar of the Overpass obstacle, but unexpectedly lost her grip and fell off.

For the first time since season eight, Barclay didn’t qualify for Las Vegas or the city finals. Before her round, she posted, “Everything I do is to make you proud. I miss you. You can watch me dedicate my run to my precious mama tonight on NBC.” While she may not have succeeded in the obstacles, she likely succeeded with making her mother proud.
