A Nightmare on Elm Street Why Freddys Greatest Nemesis Is Alice Not Nancy

Most consider Nancy Thompson to be the greatest foe of A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger, but that title really belongs to Alice Johnson. That’s not to say that Nancy, played by Heather Langenkamp in Wes Craven’s original 1984 classic, top sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and (kinda) in the meta Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, isn’t a great character. She definitely is, and there’s a reason Langenkamp’s work has resonated with so many generations of horror fans.

When it comes to Freddy’s greatest foe though, Alice is Nancy’s only real competition, although The Springwood Slasher certainly seems to have a weakness for beautiful women overall. That’s meant in the sense that he’s literally vulnerable to them, having been defeated by female characters in every single one of his outings to date. Even in Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, the only entry with a “final guy” in Jesse, it takes Jesse’s girlfriend Lisa to get the victory over Freddy.

Kristen from Dream Warriors would seem like a contender due to her powers in the dream world and defeat of Freddy the first time out, but the lame way she goes out early in the next movie disqualifies her from the running. In the end, it’s a close race between Nancy and Alice for the title of Freddy’s nemesis, but Alice wins out.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: Why Freddy’s Greatest Nemesis Is Alice, Not Nancy

To be clear, this is a battle between Nancy and Alice as characters, as Nancy’s movies are obviously better. The biggest reason Alice is Freddy’s most worthwhile foe is the sheer fact that she actually beat him, twice, and escaped the franchise with her life intact. Nancy met her demise at the business end of Freddy’s knife glove in her second appearance, and looked like an idiot in the process for falling for his ruse of her father’s ghost. Alice also actually has powers she can use to take the fight to Freddy, granted that started after Kristen seemingly bequeathed them to her in death. Nancy could only really fight Freddy after pulling him out into reality, and even then it was unclear if she really accomplished much, thanks to the original A Nightmare on Elm Street movie’s bonkers ending.

Furthermore, while Freddy certainly hated Nancy, and did kill her best friend, her boyfriend, her mom, and eventually her dad, things got even more personal between Freddy and Alice. Not only did Freddy kill Alice’s best friend, her boyfriend, and her brother, he even invaded her in the most vile way possible, literally getting inside her body via the dreams of her unborn son Jacob. That’s wrong on so many levels, and shows that Freddy’s drive to kill Alice reached heights the dream stalker had never before gotten to with Nancy. Nancy may get the glory of being in Freddy’s best movies, but Alice was his kryptonite.
