Adam McKay Recalls Will Ferrells NearDeath Accident On Anchorman 2 Set

Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay has recalled a particularly horrific moment when Will Ferrell was almost killed on the set of Anchorman 2. The popular comedy franchise about crass San Diego TV news anchor, Ron Burgundy (Ferrell), delivered two films, with the most recent entry arriving in 2013. With its stacked cast that included Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Steve Carell and Dave Koechner, it remains a comedy classic for many.

The first film in the series marked McKay’s directorial debut, arriving in 2004. It also undoubtedly helped to solidify a working relationship between Ferrell and McKay, as they went on to create Gary Sanchez Productions two years later. The production company was responsible for a lengthy list of popular comedies, including Step Brothers, Daddy’s Home, and of course, Anchorman 2. Unfortunately, by 2019, things were no longer functioning at the same level that they once were, and shortly after the abysmal failure of Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s 2018 film, Holmes & Watson, McKay and Ferrell decided to go their separate ways. Today, the pair still aren’t working together, but there was a time during the filming of Anchorman 2 that a malfunctioning prop almost ensured Ferrell never spoke to anyone again.

As ET Canada reports, Ferrell came dangerously close to being killed while filming a hanging scene in the Anchorman sequel. McKay spoke about the incident as he discussed the importance of safety on his sets, highlighting the moment as one in particular that had the cast and crew “sick about it for two days.” Describing the incident as one that was initially supposed to be a “silly joke” in the film, McKay’s explanation makes for a particularly haunting illustration of just how suddenly luck can change on a film set. “We’re always really careful. I always give an extra speech at the beginning. We had like a near accident on the set of ‘Anchorman 2.’ It was involving Will, and it was really scary. It was a scene where Ron Burgundy [Ferrell] was going to hang himself. It was a silly joke. For a half a second, the rig didn’t operate properly and there was actual tension on the rope, but then it gave way and Will was OK. Thank God no one was hurt. We were sick about it for two days. We said, ‘Alright, let’s stop. Let’s have a meeting.’”

The incident has an even more profound effect in light of the recent death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Alec Baldwin-produced film, Rust. It also serves as an important lesson for filmmakers of all levels that regardless of what genre a film is, there is always risk of serious injury or worse if proper protocols aren’t followed. In this particular case, McKay’s explanation is the first that most have heard about the incident, and there isn’t a Ferrell fan alive who doesn’t cringe at the thought of how much worse things could have turned out. Thankfully, Ferrell is alive and well, and Anchorman 2 didn’t sustain any other life-threatening moments during its production.

As for the working relationship between Ferrell and McKay, there’s certainly no shortage of fans who would absolutely love to see the two reunite for an Anchorman 3. It doesn’t appear that the two former colleagues are at that stage yet, and with McKay’s new film, Don’t Look Up, hinting at some possible awards season mileage, the wait for more comedies in the vein of Anchorman 2 might end up being even longer than previously thought. Then again, Hollywood has always been a place where even the most unexpected projects can suddenly come to life, so fans would do well to not give up hope just yet.
