Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time is easily one of the most memorable and influential shows of the last few years. Following the story of a human named Finn and his best friend Jake and their magical adventures, the show easily is one of Cartoon Network’s best.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the HBO Max Special, Adventure Time: Distant Lands which is set to start airing in a few months. In order to celebrate this, here is a list of ten interesting things that you probably didn’t know about the show.

10 It All Started With An Animated Short

Back in 2008, Pendleton Ward created an animated short called Adventure Time for the Nicktoons segment, Random! Cartoons. In it, Jake and Finn, along with a Rainicorn, rescue the kidnapped Princess Bubblegum from the Ice King.

After the short was leaked, it went viral and it looked like an Adventure Time show was on the way.

9 Was Rejected By Nickelodeon (Twice)

After the viral success of the animated short, it could have been reasonably assumed that networks would be at each other’s throats for an Adventure Time show, but that was not the case. Nickelodeon passed on the series not once but twice.

Eventually, it ended up at Cartoon Network, where Ward eventually developed the show as it is known today.

8 There Were A Couple Of Changes From The Animated Short

As the animated short needed to be developed into a full show, a couple of changes needed to be made. Most notably, the character of Finn used to be called Pen, after Ward himself.

Importantly, Lady Rainicorn was also a little different. In the short, she didn’t speak Korean and instead communicated through a range of unintelligible sounds. Interestingly, just like in the show, Jake was one of the few people who could understand her.

7 No Princess Bubblegum And Marceline

Over the years there have been tons of cartoons were female characters were just props. Therefore, it was refreshing that Adventure Time had well-written and complex characters like Princess Bubblegum and Marceline.

Yet, according to producer Fred Seibert, the two almost didn’t make it on the show. Cartoon Network didn’t want to tailor their programming towards young women and instead wanted to get rid of the characters completely. Thankfully, smarter heads prevailed and fans got to see this epic duo.

6 The Ice King And Marceline’s Back Story Was Due To A Song About Fries

Marceline and The Ice King have one of the most interesting and emotional stories. However, many fans don’t know that this incredible story was actually due to Marceline’s Fry Song.

In an earlier part of the show, the Ice King sang the Fry Song and the writers wondered if they had ever had an episode with the two of them in it, and from that, the storyline blossomed.

5 Stephen Colbert Did An Adventure Time Parody

It seems that there was a time when everybody loved Adventure Time, even late-night hosts. In 2018, Late Night With Stephen Colbert had a small segment called “Policy Time.” In it, President Trump was taken to the Land of Ooo where he was taught some foreign policy basics.

Although the segment was very short, it showcased just how much of an influence Adventure Time was and it is a pity that it was never further developed.

4 Jake And Finn Were Once In An Episode Of Futurama

It is not often that children’s cartoon characters make their way on to animated sitcoms like Futurama but in 2013, Jake and Finn played a small role in the episode, “Leela and the Genestalk.”

As fans of both shows know, Jake and Bender are voiced by the same actor John DiMaggio. Therefore, it was startling to see the two characters interact. Although Jake and Finn never got to spend any real time with the crew of the Planet Express, it was still a great cameo.

3 The Show Was Completely Banned In Kenya

Adventure Time was loved by both children and adults alike. Adults, in particular, praised the show’s progressive nature.

However, that seemingly isn’t the case everywhere. In 2017, Kenya banned the show along with Steven Universe for its LGBT themes. Normally, countries censor certain episodes of animated shows and rarely, do they ban the show outright. Therefore, this was weirdly drastic decision.

2 Pendleton Ward Quit As The Showrunner During Season Five

Being responsible for a show is a massive responsibility and it takes an insane amount of time and energy. Therefore, during season five, he quit because the show was driving him nuts.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said that the show had started to wear him out, and therefore, he chose quality of life over the need to control the show. Thankfully, Ward didn’t completely abandon Adventure Time and stayed on as one of the storyboard artists.

1 Marceline and Bubblegum’s Kiss Wasn’t Originally In The Finale

Princess Bubblegum and Marceline had one of the most epic love stories in kid’s television, especially because it was always implied and never explicitly shown. However, this changed in the show’s finale “Come Along With Me,” when the two shared a kiss.

Yet, the kiss was never part of the episode’s original outline and it was up to the storyboard artist of that scene, Hanna K. Nyströmthe, to decide what Marceline and Bubblegum’s big moment should be. To the delight of many longtime fans, she decided to go ahead with the kiss and therefore gave viewers one of the most memorable scenes in the show.
