Adventure Time 5 Things We Want To See From The HBO Max Specials (& 5 That We Dont)

It hasn’t been that long since the iconic Cartoon Network series, Adventure Time, left the airways, but it’s coming back again to dominate the streaming world. HBO Max has announced that they’ll be producing four Adventure Time specials with two coming out this year. While this is great news for Adventure Time fans, one has to wonder what the streaming platform can actually do for the series.

There are plenty of story ideas and scenarios that fans have dreamed of after seeing the ending of “Come Along With Me,” but there’s also plenty of worries that can come from a series as random as Adventure Time. This list will be looking at both sides, as it breaks down things fans want and don’t want.

10 Don’t: Voice Actor Changes

While this may seem unlikely given that some of the same creative staff is returning for the specials, it’s been a while since the crew last saw production. Differing production schedules can affect who’s available for what part; and given that HBO Max is a new business venture that’s been pushed for a relatively short time, the studio heads may want to get projects out as soon as possible.

This may endanger certain casting choices for the series. Even if it’s just side characters who change voices, the long time fans may notice and be disheartened by the loss.

9 Want To See: More Songs

While Rebecca Sugar may have left Adventure Time long ago, she certainly left a large legacy in the series for its tonal energy. In addition to being known for its weird stories, friendships, and world, Adventure Time is also famous for having some of the most sincere and down-to-earth songs in animation.

If anything, the only complaint that people have had is that the songs weren’t long enough and kind of dropped off after Sugar’s leaving. With the series possibly switching over to HBO Max, they can really hit the ground running by filling that musical void.

8 Don’t: Weird Animation

To be fair, Adventure Time has a strong history of changing its animation. Who could forget the episode “Food Chain,” directed by the rising anime giant Masaaki Yuasa? Who could forger the CG strangeness of “A Glitch is a Glitch”? Who could forget the Emmy Award winning magic of “Bad Jubies”?

However, while there’s been some magic over the years, there are also some dark spots, such as the horrifying display that is “Water Park Prank.” This episode is one of the worst rated in Adventure Time’s history, and it’s made fans everywhere worry over the term “experimental animation.” For the sake of starting off on the right foot, the specials could hold off on being too exploratory.

7 Want To See: Simon’s Adventures

The episode “Come Along With Me” created a lot of significant changes for the series. Lumpy Space Princess got to rule Lumpy Space, Gunter donned the Ice Crown, and Bubbline finally became a thing. However, the major plot thread that could spawn some new adventures for the series is the return of Simon.

Betty’s tortured and valiant efforts to save her beloved finally came into fruition, and she was able to turn Simon back into normal but at the sacrifice of her own well-being. It would be interesting to see Simon’s adventures to try and save her in return or, at least, some reference to that journey.

6 Don’t: Tree Trunks

In all honesty, Tree Trunks isn’t that bad. As a cartoon character, she’s sweet, adorable, and has a strong affinity for sultry sass. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with her, she hasn’t exactly done too many favors for the series.

Episodes involving her love life and marriage have been some of the strangest and most dissonant in the series, and she doesn’t really do much in the background besides jeer every now and then. Though she’s far from being the most hated character, she’s no fan favorite and doesn’t really offer anything to the series.

5 Want To See: Moe’s Backstory

When HBO Max announced that it would be bringing back Adventure Time, it announced that one of its specials would focus on BMO. The lovable, living gameboy has brought a lot of delight to the series, either with some childlike quips to break the tension or some of the most imaginative adventures in the series.

If there’s going to be an entire special focusing on the robot, it would be nice for it to explore a little more on BMO’s creator, Moe. Moe’s involvement with creating robots and especially the nuclear warheads in the Fire Kingdom have been teased across the series, but it would be great to see his background at full display.

4 Don’t: Bubbline Censorship

As stated earlier, the series finale finally brought Marceline and Princess Bubblegum together for an on-screen romance. As much delight as this brought to the series’ fan service, some fans were disappointed with how quick and off hand the scene was. Bubbline’s romance has been teased as a major plot point for years, yet it was nothing more than a side note in the finale.

As it just so happened, one of the upcoming specials will be focusing on a joint adventure between the two, and it would be disappointing if the studio were to go back to being coy about their relationship.

3 Want To See: The Humans On Ooo

There were a lot of changes to Ooo’s landscape at the end of the series but perhaps the most dramatic would have to be the return of the humans. Long ago, humanity abandoned Ooo to reside in isolated, protected islands. However, thanks to Finn’s talk with his mother and the de facto ruler of the human territories, Minerva, the humans began a gradual, emotional process to acclimate to Ooo.

The series finale saw various ships from the islands reach Ooo’s shores, and it would be nice to see in the specials the humans interacting with the magical world, and Finn reconnecting with his mom.

2 Don’t: Jake’s Death

Adventure Time 5 Things We Want To See From The HBO Max Specials (& 5 That We Dont)

For years, Adventure Time was haunted by the premonition simply known as Jake’s “Croak Dream.” In it, he envisioned his own death in space alongside banana man, where Finn was nowhere to be seen. This would seemingly be resolved in the episode “The Comet,” in which a similar scenario happens, but Magic Man dashes in at the last second to save him.

While it was a neat twist, it came out as more anticlimactic in the story than actually clever. Despite this, it would for a fan to actually see Jake’s death in the specials. It would mean the loss of a beloved character and, perhaps, the true end to the series.

1 Want To See: More Lumpy Space Princess

Last but not least, how could anyone forget Lumpy Space Princess? With a valley girl waltz that brings back everyone’s memories of the mid-2000’s and the wonderful panache of John DiMaggio, Lumpy Space Princess is easily one of the best comic reliefs in the entire series. If there’s going to be an Adventure Time revival, it’s going to need the return of the eccentric voice.

As stated earlier, Lumpy Space Princess finally returned to Lumpy Space in the finale to presumably assume her place as its ruler. The specials could explore a little more as to what her rule looks like or at least reference how there’s somehow a kingdom burning in space.
