Adventure Time Obsidian Will Explore Bubblegum & Marceline Romance

The second episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands will go in-depth on the history and future of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum’s romantic relationship, according to Marceline’s voice actress Olivia Olson. The special, titled “Obsidian,” will be released on HBO Max later this year as part of the four-special spinoff of the popular Cartoon Network show. Adventure Time launched in 2010 and finally aired its epic series finale in 2018.

Distant Lands debuted in June with “BMO,” the first hour-long stand-alone special, which showed the titular character getting caught up in various adventures in space. Much of the original cast and crew of Adventure Time returned to work on the spinoff series, including executive producer Adam Muto, and voice actors like Olson, Niki Yang, and Hynden Walch. “Obsidian” will be followed by the episodes “Wizard City” and “Together Again.”

In a Distant Lands panel for San Diego Comic-Con@Home, Olson confirmed that the next special will show what happens in Bubblegum and Marceline’s relationship after the events of the finale, while also diving deeper into their history together. “It was really cool to be able to see some of the things in the past that happened between them, and how it will affect their future moving forward,” Olson said while discussing her work on the project. “I was really, really excited when I read the script. I think that the way that they executed this storyline with ‘Obsidian’ is going to be really satisfying for the fans to kind of tick off a lot of questions that they have.”

Muto also discussed his work on the series and “Obsidian” in particular at the panel, saying that some of the storylines in Distant Lands, including that of Marceline and Bubblegum, came from proposed ideas for Adventure Time’s final season that were never made.

Bubblegum and Marceline kissed in the Adventure Time finale, confirming and canonizing a romantic relationship that had been hinted at throughout the show’s eight-year run. Muto credited former writer and storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar with establishing the foundation of the characters’ romantic history. Sugar went on to create the acclaimed animated series Steven Universe after working on Adventure Time, a show which has been praised for its representation of LGBTQ+ identities.

Continuing the storyline of Marceline and Bubblegum in “Obsidian” fits with Adventure Time: Distant Lands’ pitch of fleshing out fan-favorite characters from the original show. The special premieres on HBO Max later this year, though no official release date has yet been announced.
