After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

For as emotional and gutting as Netflix’s After Life is, there are fantastic and heartwarming characters throughout the series that can’t be replaced. Ricky Gervais’s character Tony is the most upsetting character because he is mourning the death of his wife Lisa. And after two seasons, he is still getting used to life without her. Luckily for Tony, his co-workers have been helpful and caring regardless of how Tony treats them. Deep down, they all know his actions and comments come from pain and they continue to care for his well-being.

Throughout two seasons, viewers have met some beloved characters that make the small town of Tambury special. But there were also characters that rubbed them (and Tony) the wrong way. Keep scrolling to check out five characters fans loved (and five fans loathed).

10 Loved: Sandy

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Sandy has to be one of the more delightful characters in After Life. She’s shy, charming, and caring. She’s younger than Tony but makes it her personal duty to care for Tony and look out for his wellbeing while in the office. She wants him happy and checks in with him whenever he lets out a heavy sigh. She even helps him look the part when he gets ready for his blind date with Rebecca. She’s lovely and one of the most authentic characters on the show.

9 Hated: Brian

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Brian is one of those guys you either feel bad for you can’t stand. Tony can’t stand Brian because he’s obsessed with the Tambury Gazette and thinks everything he does is newsworthy. Tony and Lenny finally gave-in and visited his house for a feature and found out Brian is a lonely hoarder.

And while his home life was upsetting, he’s still that annoying itch you can’t get rid of. He’s even more obnoxious in the second season when he gives way too much personal information to strangers.

8 Loved: Anne

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Anne is the friend and maternal figure Tony needed when his wife passed away. He met her by coincidence after her husband’s grave was next to Lisa’s. She was warm and welcoming from the start. She even laughed at Tony’s dry sense of humor!

Anne never once turned Tony away or discouraged him from feeling how he was feeling. She simply let him be and was an open ear and a shoulder to cry on when he needed her. She was his guardian angel and a welcomed character on the show.

7 Hated: The Psychiatrist

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

The psychiatrist in After Life is beyond obnoxious. He’s self-righteous and loves the sound of his own voice. He tries to help Tony after he lost Lisa and attempts at healing Tony’s brother-in-law, Matt, after his rough patch with his wife.

But as we see in their therapy sessions, the psychiatrist does anything but helps. He doesn’t want to see anyone happy and actually gets pissed when Matt resolves his marriage problems on his own.

6 Loved: Daphne/Roxy

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Roxy is the local “sex worker” (as she likes to call herself) and is one of Tony’s surprisingly newest friends. They met in peculiar circumstances but had a special bond almost immediately.

Unlike most of the men Roxy hangs with, Tony treats her with the respect she deserves. They share a similar, raunchy sense of humor too. In an otherwise untrustworthy world, these two found trust in each other.

5 Hated: Rebecca

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Rebecca wasn’t the absolute worst but she wasn’t necessarily kind. She and Tony were set up on a blind date because of their similar backgrounds but the date was a disaster. They were the same in that they were both widows but they were different in that Tony missed his wife and Rebecca hated her husband.

She called Tony out on his flaws and his behavior and was extremely cynical. She makes an appearance in season two but she’s still just as dry as she was in season one.

4 Loved: Kath

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Kath had the kind of bold energy that outshone others in the office. She took time in her appearance and wanted to chit chat with everyone in the office, even when they didn’t want to chit chat with her. By the second season, Kath appeared lonelier than the first season. She shot her shot with Matt but was turned down and seemed ready for a relationship. Putting Matt aside, her sense of humor and overall demeanor was welcomed sunshine in the otherwise dark show.

3 Hated: The Teen Muggers

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

In the season one pilot, Tony is walking home from the grocery store when two teens attempt to rob him. Considering he just lost his wife and was considering taking his own life, he didn’t care what happened to him from this mugging. The two teens were insistent on getting Tony’s money and were incredibly smug.

Luckily, Tony had a very firm can of dog food and hit the one mugger in the face but they were still two small characters that were not a nuisance.

2 Loved: Emma

After Life 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Cant Stand)

Nurse Emma (also referred to as “the nurse) is one of those characters that brings Tony out of his depression. Seeing her when he visits his dad is one of the shining moments in his day. The two had a slow start to their relationship but Emma helped Tony in more ways than one. She handled his cutting sense of humor with ease and always laughed when he spoke. She enjoyed Tony’s company and wanted to date him but he wasn’t ready for that next step until the very end of the second season. Because of Emma’s kindness and patience, she’s one of the best characters in the series.

1 Hated: The Man Who Scoulded Tony In The Park

Truth be told, there aren’t too many hated characters in After Life because Tony acts as both the protagonist and the antagonist. He can be rude to everyone around him but it’s coming from a place of pain. He wants to be nice, have friends, and bring life to his job again but he’s too busy wallowing to see the light.

In the first season, Tony is seen playing with his best gal Brandy when a man approaches him and tells him quite bluntly that dogs had to be leashed. He doesn’t leave until Tony grabs his dog but he’s one of those guys that turns a person’s day from a good one to a bad one. Tony and Brandy were having a happy moment after a dark time and this guy was too busy acting as the dog police to give Tony space.
