Ahsoka Learned Her Most Important Jedi Lesson From Rex Not Anakin

Although she didn’t officially ascend to Jedi Knighthood in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano was more than worthy of the title by the time she left the Jedi Order. As the padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka learned countless lessons from the unorthodox Jedi, but her most important lesson did not come from her Jedi mentor; it came from the Clone Trooper Captain Rex. In their first interaction, Ahsoka treats the clone Captain dismissively due to her technically-superior rank, to which Rex says “In my book, experience outranks everything.” Though not a Force user, let alone a Jedi, Rex’s words prove to be Ahsoka’s most important lesson as a Jedi.

Along with expanding the lore of the Star Wars Canon universe Star Wars: The Clone Wars highlights the inherent tragedies of both the Jedi and the clone troopers. Jedi are taken from their family from a young age and raised to suppress their emotions to avoid falling to the dark side. They’re meant to be peacekeepers, but they end up as Republic military leaders when the Clone Wars starts. Clone Troopers are seen by most of the galaxy as expendable, mindless, canon-fodder, yet they repeatedly demonstrate their free will and inherent kindness. Rex and Ahsoka’s friendship and character growth throughout the series emphasizes the ironies of their respective groups, and help them both grow beyond their intended roles.

As a padawan, Ahsoka was assigned the rank of commander within the 501st Legion, making her second only to her mentor Anakin. As a result of her powers and rank, Ahsoka often overestimated her leadership and fighting abilities, nearly at the cost of a battle or her own life at times. In “Duel of the Droids,” Ahsoka attacks General Grievous, dismissing him as yet another Separatist droid. Though far less dangerous than his Legends counterpart, Grievous far outclassed Ahsoka due to his fighting experience. Ahsoka took command of a clone starfighter squadron in “Storm Over Ryloth”, but refused to retreat when the Separatists overrun her pilots nearly costing the Republic their attack fleet and making a mistake that a more experienced Jedi or clone would have avoided.

Consciously or not Ahsoka also heeded the Captain’s words throughout The Clone Wars. In “Cloak of Darkness,” Ahsoka was better equipped to fight Asajj Ventress than the veteran Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, due to Tano’s experience with the Dathomirian Sith. Working together, Luminara and Ahsoka were able to defeat Ventress. During the Citadel trilogy, Anakin forbade Ahsoka from joining a strike team headed to Lola Sayu due to the padawan’s rank (and a sense of protectiveness). Ahsoka stowed away aboard the team’s vessel and worked closely with Captain Rex during the mission. Because of Ahsoka’s battlefield experience, her inclusion was invaluable to the Republic.

Ahsoka left the Jedi Order in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 5 finale, becoming an unaffiliated Force user. Nevertheless, when she works with the Republic during the Siege of Mandalore, Rex and all other Clone Troopers continue to salute her and repaint their helmets in her honor. Though neither a Jedi nor an official member of the Republic military, Ahsoka’s experience allows her to takes the position of commander within the clone army and leads her troops to victory on Mandalore. Years later, Ahsoka tutors the Rebel Ezra Bridger in the ways of the Jedi thanks to her expertise rather than rank. While most of Ahsoka’s Jedi lessons came from Anakin, her most important and practical one came from Rex.
