How Pokémon Legends Arceus Noble Pokémon Are Different

Nintendo finally revealed more information on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, including details concerning the Pokémon bosses players face in the wilds, known as Noble Pokémon. So far, only Kleavor and Wyrdeer are confirmed as Noble Pokémon, with Basculegion’s appearance suggesting its identity as a Noble as well. Pokémon Legends: Arceus needs players to complete Hisui’s first Pokédex while also quelling the rage of its Noble Pokémon. However, taming some of the most powerful monsters in the region is more complex than an average Pokémon battle.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in Hisui, a region also known as feudal Sinnoh, where players travel between Jubilife Village to fill the region’s first Pokédex. Players fulfill the role of Akari or Rei, who has joined the Galaxy Expedition Team in learning more about the region. As is customary with most Pokémon games, players choose between starters – in this game, it’s Cyndaquil, Rowlett, and Oshawatt. This is the first time starters from different regions have been present within the same selection. Akari or Rei will then depart into the wilds to catch Pokémon, calm the Noble Pokémon, and unravel the mystery of Arceus.

Unlike previous Pokémon games, Pokémon Legends: Arceus doesn’t have Gym Leaders. Given the early time period, it’s unsurprising that the Pokémon League doesn’t exist yet. Thankfully, Nintendo still implemented boss fights with Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Noble Pokémon. Nobles are much more powerful than other creatures in the area, blessed by an unknown power (likely Arceus). Unfortunately, Legends’ story suggests a mysterious force corrupted the Noble Pokémon, initiating a rampage through the wilds. Even the local Wardens, Hisui’s version of park rangers or wildlife keepers, cannot get close enough to make offerings.

Pokémon Legends Requires Players To Defeat Noble Pokémon In Person

Aside from traditional Pokémon battles, Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduces a new combat mechanic where players must physically evade and calm rampaging Noble Pokémon. Battles still play a role in these confrontations, but it is a significant departure from other forms of special combat (like Dynamax in Sword and Shield) in the Pokémon franchise. To calm the Nobles from their rage, players must throw balm at them. The specifics of how the balm soothes the Nobles is unknown, as is whether players will need to craft the balm with Legends’ new crafting system.

Aside from the unique combat mechanics that Noble Pokémon utilize, these creatures also appear to be much larger than their brethren, although not as large as Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Nintendo has revealed few overworld sprites in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but the Noble Pokémon’s increased size appears to enable players to ride them. Mounts are not new to Pokémon, with the concept for ridable monsters originating with HMs (Hidden Moves), like Surf. However, in Pokémon Sun and Moon, Pokémon mounts were given unique sprites outside of battle. Pokémon Legends: Arceus continues this trend, giving Trainers the power of flight, swimming, and an accelerated form of travel with (presumably) Noble Pokémon companions.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus has showcased many new features in its gameplay and story trailers, introducing fresh mechanics into Pokémon’s standard formula. The addition of a completely open world and the concept of a Pokémon prequel are riveting additions to the franchise. Pokémon Legends: Arceus releases January 22nd, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch and is available for preorder now.
