Aladdin fans everywhere never had a friend like the Genie, but that doesn’t mean Robin Williams’ iconic Disney character was infallible.

It should be no question that the Genie from Disney’s Aladdin is everyone’s favorite part of the film, how can one not fall in love with the zany animated antics about Robin Williams, right? Fans everywhere never had a friend like him, but that doesn’t mean the big blue ball of ’90s pop-culture-references wasn’t infallible.
Despite his “phenomenal cosmic powers,” there are still one or two things about this powerhouse of Disney magic that raises one or two eyebrows. To put it bluntly, there are some questions about the Genie that not even Jafar’s magic could uncover even after the credits roll.
10 Size Matters
It may be a product of cartoon logic, but one thing the Genie seems to use only when plot dictates is his ability to change his size, seemingly at will. Granted, this makes for several visual and physical gags Robin Williams himself would be proud to perform, but what about as a means to help out his master? Or better yet, why not use it to escape his brass prison in the Cave of Wonders?
9 Itty Bitty Living Space
With that in mind, what exactly is the lamp like? Logic possibly dictates that it has to be more than just a brass object, right? If it can contain the powers of a genie, it must be built from a seriously strong magical material.
And what about the interior? Assuming the Genie is an organic creature, he has to have a place to kick off his curly shoes. Perhaps it operates like a TARDIS from Doctor Who? Bigger on the inside?
8 Phenomenal Cosmic Powers?
Here’s one that has been on the mind of any Disney buff who’s seen Aladdin. Just how powerful is the Genie himself? He even admits to possessing phenomenal cosmic powers, so how often does he get to use them? Even if it’s just granting the wish of whoever holds the lamp, why doesn’t he use them in a more personal and practical way? Such as bargaining for his freedom.
7 Magical or Personal Limitations
When he’s first freed from his lamp, the Genie warns Aladdin that there are a few provisos with his magic. He can’t kill anybody, he can’t make anyone fall in love with anyone else, and he can’t bring back the dead.
It’s a Disney movie, these are all perfectly believable and acceptable. But are these general rules or simply his own? Maybe he’s got a shadier past than fans might believe.
6 Is a Free Genie More or Less Powerful?
If one has seen the TV series inspired by the film, they know the answer to this one already. But still, after the Genie has been set free, does he still retain all of his magic? One can assume he’s at least got one trick or two up his sleeves, he does turn into fireworks, change his forms, and come back for two sequels. Are his powers diminished or is he just holding back?
5 What Is He?
According to mythology, djinn and their kind are essentially elemental and spiritual beings made up of fire and smoke. They can be good, bad, or something in between, and sometimes they can grant wishes. But Disney’s version seems to be something else entirely.
He seems more like a cosmic or interdimensional being that originated from somewhere outside reality. How else does he make all those jokes and lines? It’s highly suspect.
4 His Last Master
The only thing the film lets viewers in on about the Genie’s last master is the fact Aladdin is a lot smaller than him. That being said, this line serves as evidence that the Genie has had other masters before, and perhaps they might not have been as nice as old Al. Perhaps that’s why he instigated the rules about murder and necromancy? Only Disney knows.
3 Did He Create Life?
During the “Prince Ali” dance and song sequence, where exactly did the Genie get all of the parade’s ensemble?
With 60 elephants, llamas galore, bears and lions, a brass band and more, 40 fakirs, cooks and bakers, and birds who warble on key, that’s a lot of people and animals to account for. Did he just poof them into existence, or magic them from somewhere else?
2 Why Become a Merchant?
This is one that has even the most magical of Mousketeers scratching between their ears. With his freedom and magic, the Genie could have been anything after being cut loose from the lamp. So why on earth did he pick a humble merchant? Granted, it would have allowed him to freely roam and explore the world, but why not become something that would allow him to live comfortably.

A question so discussed that it created its own fan theory, how does genie know all those jokes, impressions, and pop-culture references? The simple answer is Robin Williams, but the in-depth analysis goes a little further. Perhaps Agrabah is some post-apocalyptic setting? Or maybe it’s just a side-effect of living in a fairytale world. Either way, there are more theories and questions than there are Arabian Nights.
