Alien Paradise Lost Casting Key Role; Rebecca Ferguson In the Mix

Director Ridley Scott’s next film is going to be Alien: Paradise Lost, a sequel to Scott’s divisive Alien prequel/spinoff Prometheus that released in 2012. The sci-fi/horror adventure will follow the human scientist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and android David (Michael Fassbender) on a journey to the world of the Engineers: the mysterious extraterrestrials who are responsible for creating humanity.

Scott also recently confirmed that Elizabeth and David will cross paths with other “travelers” early on during their expedition; meaning, the latest Paradise Lost script draft by Michael Green (Blade Runner 2) – drawn from the older draft by Jake Paglen (Transcendence) – calls for additional roles to be filled. We’re now hearing that Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’s breakout star, Rebecca Ferguson, is in the mix for one particular key role.

Deadline is reporting that the Alien: Paradise Lost screenplay that was recently delivered to Scott and 20th Century Fox executives has been well-received; furthermore, it boasts “a peach of a major female role” that Ferguson is under consideration for. However, formal talks with the Rogue Nation star haven’t begun yet, and Ferguson is currently in talks to costar with Michael Fassbender in the mystery/thriller The Snowman – a movie that is gearing up to start production in January 2016.

Scott most recently indicated that he expects to begin principal photography on Paradise Lost by March 2016, but Deadline’s article suggests that shooting might actually start closer to the second half of that year; meaning, Ferguson could feasibly work on both Snowman and Paradise Lost. Fox had previously eyed Ferguson to star opposite Channing Tatum in Gambit, though the White Queen and Rogue Nation star has since lined up a role in the upcoming drama/thriller The Girl on the Train – and Ferguson’s name has already popped up in the Captain Marvel conversation, though Marvel Studios isn’t expected to cast the title role until 2016 at the earliest.

In short, between those tentpoles and the numerous smaller projects Ferguson is circling right now (as listed in Deadline’s write-up), it’s difficult to pin down exactly what films lie in her future just yet.

Scott has offered his assurances that Paradise Lost will explore the Engineers’ home-world, and it stands to reason that Elizabeth will have a very different perspective on the alien race – following all the terrible events that transpired to her and her loved ones in Prometheus – than the new characters that she and David cross paths with. After all, the latter will have presumably not encountered either the Engineers or any of the “biological weapons” they’ve created (via the mysterious black goo) before.

Speaking of which – Scott has also teased that Paradise Lost will further explore the origins of the Alien xenomorph and how it came to be, while at the same time touching upon similar philosophical themes and ideas as the John Milton poem from which the Prometheus sequel gets its subtitle. One can in turn imagine how the role that Ferguson is being eyed for might be a meaty one for that reason, seeing as the character probably gets quite a rude awakening – upon learning that her “gods” aren’t exactly of the benevolent variety (as Elizabeth already knows all too well).

Alien: Paradise Lost and Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 do not currently have release dates. We’ll let you know when that changes.
