Yorgos Lanthimos is a Greek director who has gained international fame with his arthouse indie dramas and thrillers in the last few years. He has been recognized by the international film community with his films garnering four Academy Award nominations, three BAFTA nominations and one win, and one Golden Globe nomination.

He has collaborated with the likes of Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in projects that were brilliant additions to their careers. His eccentric experimental style and unusual subject matters have given to his movies a “slight” reputation as products of an imagination that goes beyond the realms of normal and disturbed. Without further ado, these are all his films ranked according to Rotten Tomatoes (the tie was settled based on number of critics’ ratings).

8 My Best Friend / Ο Καλύτερός Μου Φίλος (2001) – No Score Yet

Lanthimos co-directed this film and it must have been the only straightforward comedy of his career. It was also his feature directorial debut. The film revolves around two best friends, Constantine and Alecos. Constantine wins a bonus trip to Paris from the insurance company where he works. He misses his plane and returns to find Alecos in bed with his wife. This leads the two friends to re-evaluate their whole relationship and expose each other’s long-hidden secrets. The film was co-directed by and starred Greek comedian Lakis Lazopoulos.

7 Kinetta / Κινέτα (2005) – 17%

This oddball of a drama film was the solo directorial debut of Lanthimos. Throughout off-season at the Greek coastal town of Kinetta in Attica, three people who have never met before -a plainclothes cop with a fetish for expensive German cars and Russian women, an unconventional photographer, and a hotel maid- come together for a somewhat bizarre reason: to recreate murders. Methodically and with a virtually ritualized style, the dubious trinity recreate crime scenes of vicious homicides, to the point where the limits of their own personal lives gradually start to become distorted. This alliance does not take them somewhere; in fact, it seems to make them even more nihilistic.

6 Alps / Άλπεις (2011) – 74%

All The Films Of Yorgos Lanthimos Ranked According To Rotten Tomatoes

A group of actors that call themselves Alps start an unusual and somewhat macabre acting-for-hire service: they are hired by grieving friends and families of deceased people to help them cope with the grieving process by pretending to be their lost loved ones. Alps extends its services to numerous grief-stricken people: a married guy mourning his mistress, the blind widow of a romancing husband, and a man who is grieving for a childhood friend. The clients tell the members of Alps how to dress, act, and talk, building scenarios of their choice, which occasionally traverses into psychologically intimate, even sexual situations; nevertheless, these encounters mostly feel detached and transactional.

5 Attenberg (2010) – 78%

Lanthimos did not direct this film, but he produced it and had a small acting role in it (The Engineer). Marina, a sexually innocent woman of 23, resides with her dying architect father, Spyros, at a coastal trade town and works at the resident steel-mill. Incapable of relating to those around her, she experiences life via the nature documentaries of Sir David Attenborough, the songs of the band Suicide, and what she learns about sex from her friend Bella.

Notwithstanding her sexual immaturity, Marina’s bonds with her dad and Bella express affection and kindness. Spyros, meditative on his deathbed, says how he believes, “Humans have designed ruins with mathematical accuracy…” signifying the fate of most architecture. When a mysterious engineer arrives, Marina experiences her sexual awakening.

4 The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017) – 80%

Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman star in this unconventional horror film that focuses on a slow burn pace and shocking revelations, rather than jump scares. Steven is a cardiothoracic surgeon, married to Anna with whom he has two kids, Kim and Bob. Steven frequently meets with Martin, a boy who lost his father and needs some paternal support.

Steven visits Martin’s home where his mother hits on Steven, making him leave hastily. Over the next few days, Steven ignores Martin, until one morning Bob wakes up paralyzed with no apparent physical reason why. Martin reveals the truth to Steven: his father died on Steven’s operating table. Now, Steven’s entire family will slowly die… unless he chooses one of them to kill.

This romance drama, again starring Colin Farrell, was nominated for the Palme d’Or and won the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA. John C. Reilly makes a small appearance. David, after being abandoned by his wife, goes to a weird hotel for singles where guests are given 45 days to find a match, otherwise they will be transformed into an animal of their choice (David selects a lobster). The guests have peculiar ways of determining who is their match by finding small ailments that they share. They are brainwashed about the rewards of relationships and encouraged to hunt the single people that live in the woods, as each capture earns them an extra day.

2 Dogtooth / Κυνόδοντας (2009) – 93%

This peculiar drama (that some have called comedy, but as Ebert wrote “I wasn’t laughing”) takes place almost entirely in the large fenced home of a family, whose name we never learn. All the members are prisoners to the rules and peculiarities of the father, the mother being the only willing prisoner. He controls all the thoughts and moves of his children well into adulthood, by telling them that they can never leave the house without a car (that only he has access to) because they will be eaten by wild animals. Words lose all essence as the children are taught fake meanings for words like “sea”. The father has said they will only be able to leave when they lose their dogtooth.

1 The Favourite (2018) – 93%

Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz star in this much-discussed historical drama as Queen Anne, Abigail Hill (later Baroness Masham), and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough respectively. In 1711, Queen Anne has poor health and has almost completely relinquished the ruling of her kingdom to Sarah, her courtier and secret lover.

Abigail Hill, Sarah’s penniless young cousin, comes in search of work, after her father tainted her reputation by gambling her away. She slowly rises in rank to become Anne’s Lady of the Bedchamber; she and Sarah begin clashing for the position of the utmost influence: the Queen’s Favourite.
