All The Questions Manifest’s Cancellation Leaves Unanswered

The Manifest season 3 finale raises questions that likely will never be answered now that the series has been canceled. Midway through creator Jeff Rake’s six-year plan for the show, Manifest now appears to be ending without a full explanation as to what happened to the passengers of Flight 828 during the five and a half years they were missing.

Ironically, the announcement of the cancellation came at almost the same time that Manifest’s first two seasons appeared on Netflix, shooting to #1 on the platform’s viewing list and remaining there for several days. At the word of the cancellation, Rake and the actors began showing support for the #SaveManifest campaign on Twitter, started by the series’ fan base who want closure to the story. And the obvious call has been for Netflix to pick up Manifest given the series’ popularity on the streaming service.

The cancellation also comes on the heels of Manifest’s story picking up intensity and pace in its final episodes. Momentum had been building as a glimmer of what might have happened to 828 had begun to emerge. Now fans may never know what happened, as more questions than answers remain following what appears to be Manifest’s series finale.

Manifest’s Season 3 Finale Raised More Time Travel Questions

All The Questions Manifest’s Cancellation Leaves Unanswered

For just the briefest moment at the end of Manifest’s season 3 finale, “Mayday, Part 2”, Flight 828’s Captain Bill Daly (Frank Deal) mysteriously appeared back at the controls of the reconstructed plane in the Eureka hanger. By the end of Manifest season 1 Daly was a believer in the theory that flying the plane through a mysterious lightning storm filled with “black lightning” allowed the plane to time travel into the future. He was convinced he stole a plane and flew it into another electrical storm. Before disappearing again, his final words were, “see you in 2024,” the projected “death date” for the 828 passengers.

Several theories come to mind as to why Daly suddenly reappears. The first being that once the tail fin had been properly returned to its watery resting place, the timeline that had been disturbed was restored, returning Daly to where he was supposed to be. Ben, Saanvi, and Vance defying Eureka and sending the tailfin back to the ocean and resetting the timeline could also be the explanation for why Cal Stone also reappears, especially at the age he would have been if Flight 828 never disappeared.

Who Are the Two Versions of Cal That Appear

From the beginning, Cal Stone (Jack Messina) has always been the key to solving the mystery of Flight 828. He was among the first to have a calling, and his drawings have always been explanatory or prophetic. He has always appeared wise beyond his young years, so it came as no surprise that, to convince the Eureka scientists of the necessity of listening to the callings and stop testing on the tailfin, he sacrificed himself and used the tailfin as a time transportation device, disappearing before their eyes.

The Cal Stone (Ty Doran) that returns, once the tailfin is back in the ocean, has aged five and a half years so that he is once again the same age as his twin, Olive. And wherever he was, he returned with the knowledge of what to do to help the passengers of 828. Whatever future knowledge he acquired also kept him from trying to save his mother.

What Are The Fates of Grace and Baby Eden

When Baby Eden is last seen in the Manifest season 3 finale, she’s being carried from the Stone house in Angelina’s (Holly Taylor) arms as her mother lay upstairs in a pool of blood after being stabbed by the delusional 828 passenger. On the surface, Eden may not be in any imminent physical danger as Angelina believes the baby to be her guardian angel and will want to keep her safe and close. However, the deeper Angelina falls into the delusion, the more danger the kidnapped baby will be in. The search for Baby Eden was surely planned as a key component of Manifest season 4’s story.

Grace’s fate remains uncertain, as it seems by all appearances, she has died in her son Cal’s arms after being attacked by Angelina. However, is she truly dead? Or has Cal’s return been timed to save her? By saying, “I know what to do now,” did Cal mean he knows what to do to save his mother, or was he talking in broader terms? If Ben’s theory about the passengers of 828 being resurrected by a more divine presence is true, can Cal or Ben call upon that Manifest divine presence to resurrect Grace? Why would Grace’s fate be significant to the mystery, when she wasn’t a passenger on Flight 828?

Does The Disappearing Plan Indicate Parallel Universes or Timelines Colliding

The sudden reappearance of Captain Daly, as well as his equally sudden disappearance with the reconstructed Flight 828, was one of the bigger surprises of the Manifest season 3 finale. It is just as important to point out that this flash in time occurred in front of Doctor Gupta (Mahira Kakkar); she had mentioned earlier that Eureka’s experiments with black lighting could create a temporal effect, and perhaps that is what she just witnessed firsthand.

The questions remain, did this happen because of Eureka’s experiments on the tail fin, or does it occur because Ben (Josh Dallas) and Saanvi (Parveen Kaur) returned the tail fin to the ocean? Could the Captain’s sudden appearance and disappearance be the result of Eureka’s experiments destabilizing the timeline, causing sporadic collapses? Have they damaged the timelines so badly the walls between parallel universes are beginning to deteriorate and the two have begun bleeding into one another?

Manifest’s season 3 finale maximized the show’s existing mysteries and featured startling twists that would surely have resulted in an adrenaline-packed season 4. The problem is that the mystery kept expanding instead of offering final answers to certain plot points, which means unless the series is picked up by another network, it’s unlikely viewers will get proper answers to all of their questions from the show’s writers and producers. There was simply too much story left to tell, over the course of three more seasons, for it all to wrap up neatly so soon.
