Amazon Increased Plastic Pollution By 29 Percent In 2020 Researchers Claim

Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, became the wealthiest person in the world thanks to Amazon’s online pandemic sales boom. Billions of dollars in sales mean billions of online package deliveries. The world is going through a plastic crisis that is only rising due to this new model of consumerism.

Oceana, a leading international ocean conservation organization, says that Amazon’s plastic waste increased 29 percent compared to 2019. Oceana estimates that of the 599 million pounds of plastic waste generated by Amazon, at least 23.5 million pounds reached the oceans, rivers and lakes. The amount is the same as if a delivery van dumped its entire payload in plastic waste into the ocean every 67 minutes, non-stop 24/7 for 365 days.

Amazon Denies Claims, Plastic Tax, And Secret Shoppers

Amazon denied the claims of Oceana’s report. “Amazon shares Oceana’s ambition to protect the world’s oceans and respects their work, but, for a second year, their calculations are seriously flawed,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an email sent out to the press. Amazon says Oceana’s numbers are off by 300 percent but refused to reveal how much plastic waste they produce and how much of it ends in the oceans.

Oceana urged Amazon to implement the plastic reduction programs the company has in Germany and India on a global scale. But Amazon’s restrictive use of plastic in India and Germany may be founded on bases other than green policies. Both countries are known for their plastic laws and taxing the use of plastic. In addition, Europe will be implementing a heavy plastic tax in 2022 in an effort to deter large companies from using plastic and polluting.

Amazon’s most significant problem is the use of “plastic film,” a material extremely difficult to recycle. It is not accepted in most recycling programs in the U.S. and U.K. Amazon says it is committed to the environment and lists different recycling drop-in stores “where shoppers can return packaging.” Oceana sent 186 secret shoppers to return plastic waste to these stores in 25 cities of the U.S. and U.K. Shockingly, 40 percent of the stores said they would not accept Amazon plastic packaging, and 80 percent of managers did not even know Amazon customers were being directed to their stores.
