American Horror Stories Season 1 Episode 7 Game Over Recap & Spoilers

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for American Horror Stories Season 1, Episode 7, “Game Over,” which aired Thursday on Hulu.

In American Horror Stories, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk drag audiences back to the Murder House for the third time. Despite the spin-off’s promise to deliver self-contained episodes, the season finale caps off a three-episode arc focusing on Murder House’s unhappy spirits and, specifically, Ruby (Kaia Gerber) and Scarlett’s (Sierra McCormick) romance. Only in “Game Over,” AHS fans receive a meta take on the franchise that has some rolling their eyes and others delighting in the callbacks.

The episode opens with a twisted horror enthusiast couple, Connie (Noah Cyrus) and Dylan (Adam Hagenbuch), arriving at the infamous Murder House that is now a bed and breakfast despite warnings from their driver and knowing the house’s infamous history. The self-proclaimed American Horror Story fans deliver some not-so-subtle winks to the audiences by rattling off a list of AHS locations like Hotel Cortez and recounting how they met at Comin-Con while cosplaying as Son of Bloody Face and Sister Jude. As such, Connie and Dylan confirm that in American Horror Stories’ universe, American Horror Story exists as a popular TV show.

American Horror Stories Season 1 Episode 7 Game Over Recap & Spoilers

Murder House’s bed and breakfast features a game called “Escape from Murder House,” which is why Connie and Dylan (yes, we know this is a sneaky reference to Murder House actors Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott) are there. Upon entering the kitchen, they are greeted by a macabre display of scattered black rose petals, wine that apparently tastes like blood and their first game clue. The clue directs them to the bedroom where Violet and Tate “first consummated their forbidden and fateful love” in AHS: Murder House. The couple’s delighted by the aesthetic and proceed to hook up.

After, the house seemingly comes to life around them. Beau’s red rubber ball rolls into the room; Rubber Man walks by the bedroom door, and Gladys, the nurse, lies dead at the bottom of the stairs. As Connie and Dylan make their way toward the basement, Dylan hammers home the episode’s meta take by pondering why Sarah Paulson “shit talked” Roanoke because “it’s so good.” Down in the basement, they discover three imprisoned women, who (according to an intrusive flashback) were murdered by the Rubber Man and Piggy Man when trick-or-treating at the Murder House ten years prior. Still thinking it’s all part of the bed and breakfast’s gimmick, Dylan suspects they should try to free the women. However, his noble rescue mission is cut short when Infantata attacks the couple.

Upon running upstairs, the Rubber Man, Piggy Man, Bloody Face and Twisty join forces to slaughter Connie and Dylan. Yet as Connie meets her demise, the surroundings glitch and screen pops up, reading, “You were killed by Twisty. Game Over.” The moment signifies that audiences were actually viewing a video game. The episode transitions to a teenage boy, Rory (Nicolas Bechtel), testing an American Horror Story video game designed by his mother, Michelle (Mercedes Mason). When she excitedly asks what he thinks, Rory responds, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but have you ever even watched the show?” She insists she has, but Rory cites continuity issues (like Addie being stuck in the Murder House) and not capturing the season’s true essence as reasons for its failure. While Michelle maintains the video game being scary is the most important thing, Rory comically lists Jaws 2 as a failed example of that mentality.

In an effort to connect with her son and enhance the game experience, Michelle binges American Horror Story: Murder House before deciding she also needs to purchase the property for more in-depth research. After making an offer, Michelle arrives at the Murder House on Halloween night. Upon approaching the house, she crosses paths with several familiar faces, including the mischievous twin boys, Gladys the nurse, Piggy Man, Rubber Man and American Horror Stories’ Maya (Paris Jackson) and her mean girl posse. She also witnesses Ruby and Scarlett’s emotional reunion. When they disappear inside to share a romantic bathtub moment, Michelle follows them. However, she happens upon Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) crying instead.

Michelle quickly recognizes Ben from AHS but soon realizes that he’s actually a ghost. While she’s confused, she gets sucked into a conversation with him as he reveals the hell of being eternally trapped in a house with his “wife, forever teenage daughter, her boyfriend, a newborn, and former mistress.” After Ben disappears, Scarlett and Ruby re-appear. Michelle still seems confused by the “vibe of this place,” to which Ruby responds that the spirits’ endless suffering and repetitive existence is the point, and they need more souls to feed the misery. The statement prompts the Rubber Man to appear with Ben Harmon, who encourages her to “run like hell.” Unfortunately, Michelle doesn’t make it out the front door, and Ruby and Scarlett stab her to death, dooming her to spend eternity in the Murder House.

The episode jumps to Halloween night one year later, with the now-ghost Michelle finding Rory. However, Rory gives her an “I told you so” speech and angrily talks about burning the house to the ground with the idea being fire will purify the ground and release the trapped spirits, including Michelle. While Michelle makes him promise not to do it, Rory shows up at the Murder House the next day armed with canisters of gasoline. Ruby tries to stop him, but the other restless ghosts put a stop to efforts by stabbing her. However, Ruby manages to text “help” to Scarlett as she lay on the ground bloody. Just as Rory lights the match, Scarlett arrives. Despite Ruby and Scarlett’s protests, Rory drops the match, igniting the Murder House. Although Ruby begs Scarlett to join her in death, Scarlett turns away.

“Game Over” makes another time jump. Now, three years later, Scarlett purchases a million-dollar condo built where the Murder House once stood. Despite the realtor insisting the other tenants have reported no supernatural phenomenon, Scarlett draws a romantic bath and calls out for Ruby. When Ruby doesn’t arrive, Scarlett goes to bed, and all hope seems lost. However, American Horror Stories can’t pass up a happy ending, and Ruby appears in bed next to Scarlett. As the two happily embrace, Ruby confirms all the other spirits, including Scarlett’s dads, moved on.

That’s when the episode makes its final reveal, returning to reality with Rory testing the new and improved version of Michelle’s game. Rory is impressed with the improvements, and the two celebrate with a dinner. Before they leave, Rory asks Michelle what she thinks happened to Murder House’s ghosts, to which she replies they most likely ended up in heaven or hell, but some may have decided to stick around on Earth. Perhaps the comment leaves American Horror Stories open to more Murder House encounters (although most fans hope not). However, it also begs the question of when reality diverged from the video game world in “Game On.”

The ending is definitely open for interpretation. Although it seems to imply that Michelle’s trip to the Murder House maybe happened, but she wasn’t killed there, instead choosing to return to her son and putting her experience into the video game. There’s also the possibility that Michelle died just as depicted, and Rory burned down the house. After freeing her spirit, this scene between Rory and Michelle exists in her “heaven,” where everything worked out just as it should, harkening back to Michelle’s comment about heaven and hell. As such, when the mother and son leave for diner, Beau’s red ball rolling into their house might represent the connection to the spiritual realm.

“Game Over” marked American Horror Stories season finale. All Season 1 episodes are currently available to stream on Hulu.
