American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

After each American Horror Story season passes, viewers often wonder if it can be topped. Of course, the creators continue churning out original ideas and shocking storylines, and by the fifth season, they set their sights on a Los Angeles hotel. Although the hotel is fictional, the tale is a familiar one that resonates with the real Cecil Hotel. The show has a way of navigating through sensitive topics, and there’s no shortage of those in Hotel.

Addiction and regret are the focal points of the season, and the characters that live in this world are complex and damaged. Hotel is one of the highest-rated seasons so far, but it’s been some time since it premiered on FX. So while viewers are anxiously waiting for the new season, perhaps they should check back into the Hotel Cortez and relive the darkness it contains.

10 Iris

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: I heard you the first time. Reservations?

When the first customers check into the Hotel Cortez, Iris (Kathy Bates) is slow to greet them. While the women are bright-eyed and excited, Iris’s mood towards the women foreshadows what’s to come.

Last line: Every year, on this date.

After all of the carnage that’s gone on in the hotel, many main characters have passed on and remained as spirits in the hotel. Psychic Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson) has investigated the happenings and is specifically zeroed in on John Lowe (Wes Bentley). When he appears to Iris, she tells him that she comes back to conjure him every year on Devil’s Night.

9 Sally McKenna

First line: I’ve got dibs on this one, Iris.

Sally McKenna (Paulson) has been trapped in the hotel since the 1980s. When a strange named Gabriel (Max Greenfield) asks for a room, she knows what’s about to go down. What happens to Gabriel in the hotel room is one of the most intense deaths of the season, and Sally takes pride in being the one to witness it. As she stands in the lobby, she prepares herself for what’s to come.

Last line: It’s not murder; she wants to be reborn.

When Liz Taylor (Denis O’Hare) realizes she has prostate cancer, she wants to pass away in the hotel with her friends by her side. She decides to go out in a unique way by asking the hotel’s spirits to kill her. When Hazel Evers (Mare Winningham) is shocked by what she’s asked of them, Sally corrects her because she realizes Liz Taylor wants to become who she always wanted to be when she was alive. Sally might not be Sarah Paulson’s most-liked AHS character, but viewers have to give her the benefit of the doubt at this moment.

8 James Patrick March

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: Take any piece you like; none of it has any meaning to me.

James Patrick March (Evan Peters) first appears when Tristan Duffy is riffling around in his lair. Because James died decades ago, his mortal possessions have no meaning to him. When he startles Tristan by appearing behind him, he makes this apparent right away. Although James seems like a friendly ghost, he’s amongst Evan Peters’s most vile characters.

Last line: Grab your weapons, ladies, and gents!

By the end of the season, Billie Dean Howard has been on the news for exposing Hotel Cortez and all of the evil that lives in it. When Devil’s Night rolls around, James, John Lowe, and the rest of the evil ghosts know they have to scare her or end her life. Of course, this is what James wanted to do from the get-go.

7 Detective John Lowe

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: Nobody heard anything? Lovely.

John Lowe is a Los Angeles homicide detective who’s first shown investigating a strange murder that revolves around a couple. Because these murders are initially so mysterious, viewers can tell the situation is bothering him. There’s also a look in his eye that there’s more to his story.

Last line: Soon as I close my eyes, it’ll all my gone for another year.

John’s family has gone through the wringer since the start of the season. By the end, Alex (Chloë Savigny) and Holden (Lennon Henry) live in the hotel, Scarlett is out in the world getting older, and John can only visit on Devil’s Night. When an older Scarlett is seen visiting her family at Hotel Cortez, it’s evident how hard the situation is on the family when John mutters his final words.

6 Donovan

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: It’s not the getting ready; it’s the clean-up.

Donovan (Matt Bomer) is The Countess’s (Lady Gaga) boy toy, and their first scene together is shocking and sets the tone for the rest of the season. After they’ve killed their first victims, they’re sitting in bed, bloody, and Donovan expresses his dislike for the messy situation in front of them.

Last line: Thank you. Mom?

Donovan is tossed aside by The Countess, and after a series of events, he’s reunited with her, only to be killed in the name of love. When Iris and Liz Taylor crash into her penthouse, intending to kill her, they didn’t realize Donovan is in there with her. He’s shot several times, and as he’s dying, he asks the ladies to take him to the street, so he isn’t trapped in the hotel. Because he and Iris didn’t have a good relationship throughout the season, his last moments are touching and show how much he actually does care for her.

5 Liz Taylor

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: Oh, we have a bit of everything. Some pay by the month, some pay by the hour, and some of the old-timers have been here since the dawn of time.

When a murder investigation brings John Lowe to the Hotel Cortez, he’s met by Liz Taylor. He specifically wants to see Room 64, and while he and Liz are in the elevator, John asks Liz what type of people usually stay here. It’s a loaded question, of course, but Liz hides the truth from him with ease.

Last line: Oh, that room is booked. Fine.

By this point, gawkers are flooding to the Hotel Cortez to stay in Room 64. Because Liz died in the hotel, she’s found managing the front desk and checking in obnoxious customers. When a woman comes to claim her reservation in Room 64, it’s clear Liz is annoyed because of the attention the hotel is getting.

4 Will Drake

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: I prefer dealing with a trust—Anonymous, unsentimental.

Will Drake (Cheyenne Jackson) is common enemy number one to those living in the hotel. He’s relocated from New York City to buy the hotel and completely renovate it. Of course, the residents living there don’t agree, and when he arrives at the hotel with his son, it’s apparent he’s there on a mission.

Last line: One call and I can get you the best doctor in the world.

By the end of the season, Will was killed by The Countess, and in turn, lost most of his wealth. Because he’s stuck in the hotel, he finds new meaning in his life when Liz encourages him to start a fashion company. Because of this, he forms a bond with her and is heartbroken when Liz reveals she has cancer. Because he knows the right people, he tells her he can help her, but unfortunately, it’s too late.

3 Ramona Royale

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: How many junkies did you feed on, Donovan?

Ramona Royale (Angela Bassett) is The Countess’s ex-lover, and because she wouldn’t let Ramona find happiness after breaking up, she wants revenge. To get the party started, she tracks down Donovan and kidnaps him to get to The Countess. Because The Countess dumped Donovan, he goes on a bender. In turn, she has to purify his blood because of the drugs he’s consumed.

Last line: So, if you even let out a whisper of a word that sounds like Cortez, I’ll find you and drain every drop of life from your skinny ass.

Ramona joins in on Devil’s Night to torture and scares Billie Dean Howard in the season finale. To assure Billie doesn’t bother the hotel’s residents anymore, she assures her that if Billie continues to glorify Hotel Cortez, she’ll hunt her down and kill her.

2 Tristan Duffy

American Horror Story Hotel Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Series

First line: What? Whatever. Let’s just do this.

Tristan Duffy (Finn Wittrock) is known in the modeling world for pulling stunts at shows. When viewers first lay their eyes on him, he’s using drugs in the dressing room. When it’s his time to shine on the catwalk, it’s clear he’s not really interested and has bled on his white shirt. There might be some aspects that don’t make sense about Hotel, but Tristan Duffy fits right in.

Last line: Darlin’, you had more living to do. I couldn’t get in the way of that.

By the end of the season, Tristan has been killed by The Countess after she finds out he’s in love with Liz Taylor. Because he’s bound to the hotel forever, he can now live in peace and with his true love. After Liz decides to die in the hotel, Tristan scolds her for doing what she did. In reality, it’s obvious he’s happy they’re together forever.

1 The Countess

First line: And you didn’t feel like going out tonight.

Lady Gaga’s performance of The Countess was exceptional, and from the very start, there’s an aura about the character. After she and Donovan go out hunting for their first on-screen victims, they lay in bed after the feast. The situation is pleasing to the couple, and The Countess reminds Donovan that going out was the right thing to do.

Last line: You have a jawline for days.

Several characters tried to get rid of The Countess throughout the season, but it’s not until the end when John Lowe is successful. She’s bound to the hotel and living an eternity with her original husband, James March. In the last moments of the season, The Countess is scouting for new prospects in the hotel bar. When she’s found her match, her final line is a familiar one viewers have heard before.
