American Horror Story Theory Asylums Dr Arden Is An Alien

Arguably one of the creepiest characters in American Horror Story season 2, Asylum, Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) was already linked to the Nazi Party, but one theory suggests he’s also an alien. Could this be possible?

Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series met immense critical acclaim, racking up the most awards of any season to date, and for good reason. Centered around a Catholic-run institution known as Briarcliff Manor, Asylum introduced numerous types of evil—Nazis, aliens, human experiments, racism, inhumane practices such as conversation therapy, demonic possession, and a serial killer known as Bloody Face. While somewhat jumbled due to all these different sub-plots, Asylum showed some of the finest work from actors Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, and Lily Rabe to date. Actor James Cromwell, who has had an impressive career since the 1960s, stepped up to play the role of the insidious Dr. Arden, who was tasked with providing healthcare to the patients. Arden also had a penchant for performing lobotomies.

American Horror Story is ripe for fan theories, and creator Ryan Murphy is even known to encourage them. Not only did he confirm that every season is connected, but he posted about the popular Dante’s Inferno theory on his Instagram. However, some are more far-fetched than others, but in the world of American Horror Story, almost anything seems possible—within reason.

Is Asylum’s Dr. Arden Really An Alien?

Dr. Arden’s status as a Nazi doctor during World War II was left ambiguous after a woman claiming to be Anne Frank showed up at Briarcliff; she called him Hans Grüper. However, the young woman’s story ended tragically after she was lobotomized by the not-so-good doctor, then sent back to live with her husband and child. Fans speculated about whether “Anne” was telling the truth about her own identity, but Arden was confirmed to be a Nazi. Season 4 of American Horror Story added further weight to this confirmation when Hans Grüper—played by Cromwell’s son, John—made another appearance as one of the men who removed Elsa Mars’ legs in a particularly sadistic snuff film.

The theory that suggests Arden is an alien is a little more difficult to believe. First, the theory connects a similarity between Dr. Arden and the aliens who took a particularly vested interest in Kit Walker (Evan Peters) and his wife, Alma (Britne Oldford) as test subject. Both are known for experimentations on humans; Arden’s can be debunked by his past as a Nazi doctor, who specialized in these sorts of strange experiments. This is also documented historically through figures like Dr. Josef Mengele; Mengele was known as the “Angel of Death”. Mengele’s research was primarily focused on genetic experiments, twins in particular. The theory continues by stating that Kit—who had witnessed the aliens—initially thought Dr. Arden was an alien when they first met; this could be debunked easily given the trauma Kit had endured, the drugs given to him at Briarcliff, and general disorientation.

After he attempted to sexually assault one of his patients, Shelly (Chloë Sevigny), she made a comment about Arden’s genitals, which has added weight to the theory that something is physically wrong with them. While the theory suggests this could be some sort of physical alien trait, it’s more likely a product of his lifelong experimentation, exposure to radiation, and numerous other chemicals. After all, the gruesome aftermath of his experiments were heavily featured in season 2; there’s little chance being so close to that for decades wouldn’t cause some negative results. Arden’s backstory as a Nazi doctor is far too rich to ignore, and while it’s very possible that aliens are able to do things like implant memories or influence people in unknown ways, this American Horror Story theory just doesn’t seem likely.
