American Horror Storys Piggy Man Legend Explained

Ryan Murphy’s anthology horror series American Horror Story introduced a disturbing creature legend in season 1, episode 6, “Piggy Piggy” who would return throughout the series in various instances. He is commonly referred to as “Piggy Man.” The legend describes him as wearing a bloody pig’s head, covered in burns and soot, and often squeals like a pig to intimidate his victims.

American Horror Story: Murder House featured a disgruntled patient named Derrick (Eric Stonestreet) who sees psychiatrist Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) in hopes that he will end the recurring nightmares Piggy Man. Ben recommends that he confront his fears by doing the ritual to call the creature to him. Derrick looks in the mirror, says his name three times, and finds that there is nothing to fear. Except, a burglar was hiding behind the shower curtain and believes that Derrick was taunting him. The intruder kills the innocent man and the Piggy Man myth disappears from the series until season six, American Horror Story: Roanoke.

Throughout season 6, Piggy Man acts as an evil entity that plagues the old farmhouse and its tenants. As the history of the Roanoke colony progresses, it is discovered that Piggy Man was once a member of the colony who stole provisions and was marked as a traitor. He was scalped by Scáthach (Lady Gaga) for his wrong doings and once the colony discovered him alive on the outskirts of the woods, the Butcher (Kathy Bates) dragged his body back for further punishment. She placed a pig’s head over his, nailed a pig’s tail to his tailbone, and roasted him over the fire. These events brought on the complex legend of the Piggy Man.

The Legend Of Piggy Man

In season 1, episode 6, “Piggy Piggy”, Derrick mentions the Piggy Man story as being an urban legend and most find their roots in true stories. The legend originated from Kincaid Polk, who is an ancestor of the Polk family featured throughout American Horror Story: Roanoke. As the Polks live on the land that was once owned by the Butcher, Kincaid participated in the human sacrifices in exchange for their family’s peace. After finding inspiration through Piggy Man, he set out to become a real-life embodiment of the malevolent entity.

Kincaid made himself a pig mask similar to the ghost’s and moved to Chicago to commit his crimes. He took care of and slaughtered pigs while living in the Midwestern city. In 1893, Kincaid attended the Chicago’s World Fair where he put on his pig mask and massacred attendees. Due to an inexplicable accident, he was eaten alive by his own swine. The legend unfolds as the series continues to progress. While the Piggy Man first appears as an unsuspecting nightmare figure fueled by urban legends told to Derrick as a young boy, the true crimes of Kincaid are the facts behind the fiction.

The original Piggy Man created by the Butcher did not start the horrific urban legend. Instead, Kincaid Polk is the reason that there was one created. It trickled down throughout the centuries until the Piggy Man’s appearance inspired him to commit a brutal massacre in an otherwise joyful setting. From there, the legend spread across the United States and into the mind of Derrick who was plagued by nightmares of the creature for years. The Piggy Man story is iconic to American Horror Story; it seems likely Ryan Murphy will harken back to the malevolent spirit somehow in the future, as he has done before.
