Fox’s long-running hit American Idol has had plenty of viral moments that fans love to rewatch, from hilarious auditions to incredible performances.

Some of the most memorable scenes on American Idol, including both the original series as well as the resurrected version, involve contestant auditions. 10 Kelly Clarkson’s Win

From the first season finale of American Idol, the looks on winner Kelly Clarkson’s and runner-up Justin Guarini’s faces are ingrained in viewers’ minds. It’s the image that appeared in newspapers, magazines, and websites everywhere once the first winner of the show was crowned.

It was a bittersweet moment as Clarkson, fighting back tears, attempted to sing “A Moment Like This,” the song that was written for her on the show, with words that fit that moment perfectly. That song is now just one of many, many hits for Clarkson, who became a massively successful music artist and businessperson.

9 William Hung’s “She Bangs” Audition

One of the favorite parts of American Idol since its inception has been the outlandish auditions from people who either really can’t sing or just have unique and eccentric personalities. These days, the new judges aren’t quite as mean as Simon Cowell was in the beginning, and one of the earliest victims of his vitriol was William Hung.

The adorable young man sang his rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” and had everyone in awe. It wasn’t because he could not sing or dance very well at all, but because Hung had an amazing sense of confidence that suggested he really believed in himself regardless of his talent level. While he didn’t make it through to the competition, Hung was invited back to the show to perform on stage. His audition video also went viral, giving him passing celebrity status that he leveraged to try and pursue a music career. While that didn’t work out, Hung’s audition still went down in history as one of the best from American Idol’s original run.

8 Simon Cowell Getting Water In His Face

Simon Cowell was famous for his mean-spiritedness in the early days of American Idol, which ironically is what endeared him to an American audience who appreciated his blunt yet honest critiques. Not everyone liked his approach, though, and sometimes he went too far.

One such incident was with Johnathan Rey. After being told by Cowell in his audition that they might just cancel the competition because his singing was so terrible, Rey walked up to the judges table, seemingly to shake their hands and say thank you for the opportunity. Instead, he grabbed a cup of water and swiftly threw it in Cowell’s face. Security had to be called in. While fans loved Cowell, there’s no denying it was a moment of revenge worth watching over and over again.

7 Jennifer Hudson’s Elimination

One of the most shocking eliminations on the show was that of Jennifer Hudson in season 3. Hudson was clearly one of the most talented singers left in the competition. As fans know today, she has a monster of a voice and went on to achieve tremendous success both in singing and acting. This includes winning an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls in 2006, the most successful American Idol movie or TV appearances of any former contestant.

The scene when Hudson’s name was called as the person to be going home elicited audible gasps from the audience. Even Hudson herself looked shocked, as did the two other women who joined her in the bottom three. Fans love watching the scene play out over again to relive the disbelief everyone felt and to feel vindicated in their knowledge of how successful Hudson went on to become anyway.

6 Prince’s Performance

In season 5, when American Idol was at the top of its game, Prince popped in for a couple of performances that blew everyone away. He played two songs on the final episode: “Lolita” and “Satisfied,” both from his 3121 album.

Part of what made the moment so special, and one fans wanted to watch again and again, was that it marked a historic moment. Season 5 marked the first time Prince cleared his catalogue of songs for use on the show. He also wasn’t booked to perform, as executive produce Nigel Lythgoe told Yahoo Entertainment. He just showed up, walked on stage, did his songs, then left.

5 Adam Lambert’s “Mad World” Performance

There are a ton of memorable performances from American Idol contestants over the years, but none quite as memorable as Adam Lambert’s emotional and incredible rendition of “Mad World.” (The song is originally by the band Tears for Fears, but Lambert sang the popular arrangement from singer/songwriter Gary Jules’ cover version.)

Even though Lambert was the hands-down favorite to win, particularly after that performance, he wound up losing to Kris Allen. Still, Lambert’s time on the show helped secure him a healthy music career. Today, he’s the singer for Queen.

4 Larry Platt’s “Pants On The Ground” Audition

No matter how awkward the performance was, nor how ridiculous the song, people everywhere were singing “Pants On The Ground” the day after this episode aired. General Larry Platt auditioned at the age of 62 not only to show off his presumed vocal talents but also to make a public service announcement of sorts. He was sick and tired of young men wearing theirs pants so low, off their rears and almost to the ground. So he wrote a song about it.

Not only is the song super-catchy, but watching the judges hold back tears as they laughed so hard watching it is priceless. Not surprisingly, the video went viral so people could indeed watch it over and over.

3 Mariah Carey Vs. Nicki Minaj

Some fans forget that there were two seasons when powerhouses Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj were both judges. The two pop stars didn’t quite get along.

There were many scenes where fans could cut the tension with a knife and sense the passive-aggression in their comments or visible eye rolls when one critiqued someone’s audition and the other didn’t agree the assessment. But it was one particular piece of leaked footage of the pair arguing that fans play again and again. In it, Carey and Minaj can be heard arguing and exchanging expletives, but the reason for the outburst has never been clarified, according to MTV. It’s no surprise Carey and Minaj’s stints on American Idol didn’t last long, and both have gone down as two of the worst judges in the show’s history.

2 Kanye West’s Audition

The judges never know who will show up in front of them. Back in 2016, world-famous rapper, singer, producer, and businessman Kanye West paid the show a surprise visit. He stood up in front of judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr.to deliver an amazing performance that would easily have landed him a golden ticket to Hollywood had he not already been a huge superstar. (The judges gave him one anyway, as part of the fun.)

Fittingly, West performed a verse from his hit song “Gold Digger,” including the part that references Jennifer Lopez herself.

1 Carrie Underwood’s “Alone” Performance

It was like she was possessed by Heart as Carrie Underwood delivered a powerful rendition of the rock group’s 1987 hit song “Alone.” Her performance sounded like it was being played from a record and had the room in complete silence as they watched in awe. With the perfect outfit, complete with big ’80s hair and tons of attitude, it’s no wonder that Underwood went on to become one of the most successful American Idol winners ever.

The performance is worth looking back on to see not only how much Underwood has grown in the years since but also how incredibly talented she was right from the start.
