Alyssa Wray was a contestant on season 19 of American Idol. The 19-year-old is from Perryville, Kentucky, and attends Northern Kentucky University, where she studies musical theatre. She was the final auditioner in her round and sang “I Am Changing” by Jennifer Hudson. Her audition has over 2 million views on YouTube and brought all three judges to their feet mid-performance. “How lucky are we to finally say, ‘We knew you when…’ and ‘We had something to do with it,’” judge Lionel Richie told her before the three ultimately gave her a yes, a yes, and a “yes without a doubt.”

Alyssa describes herself as “colorful” and “outside the box,” and says she romanticizes everything. A self-proclaimed romcom enthusiast, she imagines her life is like a movie where she’s a small-town girl dreaming of seeing her name in lights. Growing up in Perryville there are only about 750 people around her. Being 6’2”, she is a tall woman, which made her stand out. At first, she said she felt weird about it, but now her being different is her “superpower.” With her hashtag #weareallweirdos, she wants to create a space where people can look at her and think she’s different but is still following her dream, which could inspire them to do so too.

Alyssa spoke on her journey on the show, saying, “I feel like if I had seen more of myself on the TV or in my community as I was growing up, just someone who was different and was unashamed to be different, I might have not have had to deal with so much insecurity and heartache (via Advocate Messenger). Alyssa has an Instagram (@itsalyssawray) with over 57k followers. With nearly 500 posts, she has pictures with friends, selfies, and videos of herself covering popular songs. Of course, she also has content promoting her spot on American Idol.

Since being on the show, Alyssa has mostly documented her journey while competing each night and traveling to Disney World. She made friends with contestants Cassandra Coleman, Grace Kinster, and Casey Bishop, who can all be seen in her photos. She also created Thriller dance videos with contestant Willie Spence. Alyssa also received fan art that she enjoys sharing on her social media. Prior to her appearance on the show, according to her Instagram, Alyssa played basketball, dressed up as a princess for parties, and made a hobby of visiting New York to see Broadway musicals. She even performed roles in amateur musical theater productions, including Elsa in Frozen, Fiona in Shrek the Musical, and Paulette in Legally Blonde. Her dream role is Elphaba in Wicked.

On the show, Alyssa performed “Something in the Water” by Carrie Underwood, “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston, and “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. Her singing style was described by Katy Perry as elegant and elevated. Luke Bryan said she is “truly a work of art to watch.” Unfortunately for her, she was eliminated along with Deshawn Goncalves and Cassandra during Disney Week after she sang “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” by Ilene Woods. She told her Instagram followers, “More words will come soon. I love you all so much, thank you.”
