American Idol How Much Money Simon Cowell Made On The Show

Of all the celebrity judges who have appeared on American Idol, Simon Cowell is by far the most famous. His blunt, snarky attitude made him the villain of the show, who fans loved to hate. He was also friends with the show’s creator, Simon Fuller. Cowell helped Fuller pitch the show until it eventually sold to the Fox network. This connection meant he was paid significantly more than his fellow judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

Simon Cowell had a difficult 2020, but it had nothing to do with COVID-19. He was in a serious biking accident that left him with a broken back. After a six-hour surgery and months of rest and special exercises, he is finally getting back to normal. While it was a long, hard road getting past the pain, he at least had his luxury home to recuperate in. His generous salary from American Idol no doubt helped him pay for his mansion.

According to StyleCaster, Cowell was getting paid around $35 million per season of American Idol from the very beginning. Even compared to his fellow judges, who were making closer to $5 million per season, this is a huge salary. This salary discrepancy may have been the reason why Paula Abdul left the series after eight seasons. When Cowell’s salary was found out publicly, Abdul allegedly asked for a raise in her salary. When her request was denied, she left the production. Given the massive discrepancy between what Abdul was getting paid and what Cowell was getting paid, it was understandable that Abdul wanted a similar paycheck for doing the same amount of work.

Despite his big paycheck, Cowell left American Idol after season nine. He was plenty busy, having started his own three-part production company: Syco TV, Syco Film, and Syco Music. Under Syco TV, he created The X Factor, producing both a UK version and an American version, and serving as a judge on both shows. He also was executive producer and occasional judge on both America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent. Like American Idol, all these shows allowed him to maintain his trademark rudeness, which seems to be his greatest strength, though it may also be the reason the artists who sign with his record label don’t enjoy working with him.

American Idol not only gave Simon Cowell a start on his riches, but it also led to him becoming a fairly well-known name in both Britain and America. It has been announced that Cowell will serve as a judge on The X Factor Israel in 2021. As long as his fame and wealth continue to grow, Cowell will no doubt continue to play up his brusk, opinionated personality that he has built quite the successful empire on.
