American Werewolf Transformation Scene Recreated in Stop Motion

Neca Toys has released a wonderful stop-motion recreation of David Kessler’s transformation into a werewolf in An American Werewolf in London.

The famed transformation scene from the classic horror-comedy An American Werewolf in London has been recreated using stop-motion. The 1981 John Landis film remains arguably one of the greatest werewolf films of all time, and its stunning visual effects earned seven-time Oscar-winner Rick Baker his first golden statuette. Even today, it’s hard to think of many films that could challenge An American Werewolf in London’s transformation scene for sheer brilliance and detail, and it remains beloved by many.

The film follows good friends David Kessler and Jack Goodman as they backpack around Europe. During the England portion of their trip, the duo are unexpectedly attacked by an unseen creature while wandering the Yorkshire moors at night. Jack is killed on the spot, while David escapes with relatively minor injuries. Unfortunately, as time passes, he is increasingly haunted by visions of his friend, back from the dead to confirm that what killed him and bit David was a werewolf. Jack implores David to kill himself in order to avoid also turning into a werewolf and killing more people. It’s a dark and at times incredibly gory film, but that’s exactly what makes it so appealing to its fans.

While the idea of rebooting An American Werewolf in London is unlikely to impress much of the film’s devoted fanbase, the latest nod to the one-of-a-kind horror film comes in the form of a stop-motion recreation of David’s transformation into the werewolf. NECA Toys has just released a fantastic animated re-enactment of the moment that precedes the protagonist going on his first killing spree as the horrific beast. The all-too-brief video can be found on NECA’s official Instagram account, and the original post can be seen below:

The video was made to advertise NECA’s American Werewolf figurines, including the Kessler Wolf as well as the Nightmare Demon, and fans of the original film will likely agree that the only thing missing is Creedance Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising” playing over top of the transformation recreation. The film has aged considerably well compared to so many other films made during that time, horror or otherwise, and a Kessler Wolf figure is arguably one of the best ways to celebrate a film that continues to resonate with viewers. It remains to be seen if NECA will continue to make figures from the film, but even if these two seven-inch figures are all that the toy company produces, they’re still a treat.

Unfortunately for those fans who feel that An American Werewolf in London is due for a reboot, plans to have Landis’ son Max handle a new film were jettisoned after numerous sexual assault allegations surfaced against him. This doesn’t mean that a reboot is out of the question in the future, but for now, there does not appear to be any serious momentum behind the project. It’s safe to assume that most fans don’t want to see the film remade anyway, but given enough time, it’s entirely possible that a reboot will arrive.
