America’s Got Talent Fans Want Younger Judges To Freshen Up Show

America’s Got Talent season 16 has been on the air for almost a month, and fans are already complaining that the judges are out of touch; they want younger celebrities brought on board who won’t be overjoyed by mediocre acts. Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara all returned to the talent competition series this year to find the best acts in the country. In just the first four episodes, fans have seen quite an array of talent grace the AGT stage, from the superb to the horrendous, which is usual for this show. Season 16 has even featured comedian Josh Blue, a winner from Last Comic Standing, and Cowell pulling an elaborate prank on Vergara.

There have been many judges that have come and gone from America’s Got Talent over the years. Some, like Mandel, have been on the judging panel for many years. Others, like Brandy, Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union, only lasted one season. Most of the celebrities that NBC has hired for this show have been in their 40’s and 50’s. Cowell and Mandel are now in their 60’s. The youngest judges to ever sign on to AGT were Brandy and Hough, who were in their late 20’s and early 30’s, respectively.

Fans have noticed that the America’s Got Talent judges seem to be a little too impressed by mediocre and average acts. They want younger judges to join the show who are more in touch with what America wants to see. A fan took to Reddit to say, “It seems like the judges in the past couple years have been impressed by average things I see on the Internet every day. They find these acts amazing because they aren’t used to seeing these things on a regular basis.” The fan believes that if one or two of the celebrities “were in their 20’s to early 30’s, there would be better representation of new talent.”

One fan claimed that the over-the-top reactions by the America’s Got Talent judges are “part of the schtick…It’s a role they’re playing.” Another fan brought up the point that part of the goal of AGT is to find acts that can perform in Las Vegas, but some of the acts the judges keep around are “not Vegas worthy” and “no venue will give a serious spot” to them since “they would not draw a good crowd.” A fan suggested some celebrities in their 30’s and 40’s who would be great as AGT judges, including Adam Lambert, Darren Criss, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Travis Wall and Mark Ballas.

Lambert would be a great judge because he’s not afraid to speak his mind. Years ago, he was speculated about as a possible American Idol judge. Interestingly, both he and tWitch will be judges on an upcoming E! competition series called Clash of the Cover Bands. Both E! and NBC are owned by NBCUniversal/Comcast, so if the singer and dancer do well on that show, NBC could easily bring them on board America’s Got Talent. Fans would likely rather see Lambert join Idol instead, though.

Cowell will be a judge on America’s Got Talent for as long as he wants to be, unless something drastic happens that forces NBC to fire him. As for Mandel, he’s been with AGT for over 10 years. Despite that loyalty to the show, it wouldn’t be unheard of for a network to replace someone in his position should they feel the need to freshen up the panel. Having said all this, the last time major changes were made to the judging panel, Union and Hugh only lasted on AGT for one season. It was clear that Klum should never have been let go, and she returned the following year. And Vergara has been a fun addition to the panel as well.
