America’s Next Top Model 5 Most Problematic & Dangerous Photo Shoots

It’s hard to remember a time before America’s Next Top Model (or ANTM) was seen as problematic, but for 24 seasons (or cycles, as the show calls them), the franchise got away with scores of offensive and dangerous photoshoots. Though often entertaining for viewers, these misguided photoshoots were the epitome of bad taste and sometimes even put the models in harm’s way.

On ANTM, aspiring—and generally inexperienced—models compete to win a tempting prize package that includes contracts with modeling agencies and major makeup brands. However, many of the show’s alum have slammed the show and Tyra Banks for being damaging to their careers and mental health. Each season, models have to participate in photoshoots with often outrageous themes, and the model with the worst photo is eliminated. There have been dozens of weird, questionable, and shocking photoshoots throughout ANTM history, but these are some of the worst offenders.

Cycle 4 – Different Ethnicities

On cycle 4, models participated in a Got Milk campaign photoshoot that had them portraying different ethnicities from their own. The photoshoot was full of awful stereotypes and even offended the shoot’s creative director Jay Manuel. A white woman portrayed a Black woman with an enormous afro, a Black woman portrayed a Korean woman, and viewers of pretty much any race were right to be upset.

Cycle 7 – Freezing Water

In a cycle 7 photoshoot, models floated in a pool filled with extremely cold water and were shot from above. All the models were miserable, but one—CariDee English—got actual hypothermia. Throughout the shoot, Tyra chastised CariDee for “complaining” about being cold, but when she had to be pulled out of the water because she was shaking so hard, Tyra told CariDee it was her responsibility to speak up when she is pushed past her limit.

Cycle 8 – Crime Scene

Cycle 8 was full of problematic photoshoots, but the worst was when the models posed as murdered victims in a mock crime scene. Each model was “killed” in a different way and were told to “bring a little life to a dead pose.” The gruesome photos were shocking and in very poor taste, as they literally glamorized murder.

Cycle 13 – Hapa

In cycle 13, the models were taken to Hawaii and introduced to the term “hapa.” Hapa is a non-derogatory Hawaiian word for mixed-race individuals, but Tyra Banks had a tenuous grasp of the term. Models were told to embody strange ethnic combinations like Mexican and Greek, Native American and East Indian, and Moroccan and Russian. Tyra eventually addressed how inappropriate the photoshoot was, but there’s a lot more she should have apologized for.

Cycle 22 – Total Darkness

The cycle 22 contestants included the show’s first (and only) deaf model, Nyle DiMarco. However, one of the season’s photoshoots seemed to be designed to sabotage him. The models were required to do a shoot at night in pitch black. The other models followed audio cues to know when to pose, but Nyle obviously couldn’t, and he was completely thrown off. The creative director tried using flashlights and banging on the platform Nyle was on, but he still, understandably, struggled more than the other models.

It’s no secret that America’s Next Top Model hasn’t aged well, but revisiting the series is still more shocking than you’d think. Nearly every season is riddled with racism, misogyny, homophobia, and really any form of problematic viewpoint imaginable. From cringeworthy to offensive, to downright dangerous, the series’ photoshoots are memorable in all the wrong ways.
