An Avenger Just Learned The Secret of Earths Most Powerful Species

Marvel’s version of Earth isn’t exactly lacking for sentient species. There are humans, of course, but they share the planet with mutants, Inhumans, Atlanteans, synthezoids, vampires, aliens, demons and more. But in Greg Pak, Ario Anindito, and Robert Gill’s Atlantis Attacks #4, Namor and the Agents of Atlas have finally learned that none of them are actually Earth’s dominant species.

Atlantis Attacks sees the meeting between the new and former Agents of Atlas teams, set against the backdrop of billionaire Mike Nguyen’s conflict with the nation of Atlantis, and of course their champion Namor the Sub-Mariner. The Agents of Atlas have long been a secretive group, often allowing Marvel’s heroes to wrongly think them villains, but the new team – comprised of Marvel’s most capable Asian and Asian American heroes, such as Silk and Brawn – are more straight-forwardly heroic, and when Namor forces Jimmy Woo’s hand, they’re shocked to learn the big secret that the super spy has been keeping since 2006.

Marvel’s Agents of Atlas limited series, by Jeff Parker and Leonard Kirk, saw secret agent Jimmy Woo learn that much of his life had been based on a lie. The villain he’d been fighting his entire life had actually been testing him, assessing his fitness to inherit the Atlas Foundation – a massive crime syndicate which was now Jimmy’s to lead. Jimmy agreed to take control, forming a team of Golden Age Marvel heroes he hoped would help him turn the Atlas Foundation into a force for good, but he had to be careful. The ancient organization was riven by internal politics and presided over by the ancient Mr. Lao – a mighty dragon who acted as Woo’s consigliere, steering Jimmy’s decisions towards his own ends. As their adventures continued, the Agents of Atlas discovered that Mr. Lao wasn’t the only dragon they had to worry about, encountering Mr. Yao in “The Dragon’s Corridor” storyline, a dragon who controlled his own rival organization.

Recent events have revealed the scale of the problem, with billionaire Mike Nguyen attempting to study and capture Earth’s dragons in order to replace them as the secret master of mankind. Up until recently, those Marvel heroes who knew about the ancient dragons thought of them as singular threats, but in Atlantis Attacks #4, a confrontation between Namor and Amadeus Cho, aka Brawn, forces Jimmy Woo to finally put the situation into words:

We like to think we’re the planet’s dominant species. But arguably, we’re just the pawns of Earth’s true rulers… a group of ancient dragons who for millennia have served as advisors to kings and queen and presidents and dictators…

Amadeus quickly points out that Jimmy himself has been influenced by a dragon, and Jimmy agrees, arguing that the current status quo is preferable to the dragons going directly to war and razing Earth. This shift in perspective is a fascinating way to tie together the various dragons of Marvel lore, positioning the dragons not as a near-extinct race of individuals, but rather the immortal puppet masters of countless proxy wars, kept in check only by the risk they pose to each other should they truly do battle. With Agents of Atlas vol. 3, #1 teasing a “Clash of Dragons” and Marvel announcing that Marvel hero Iron Fist will soon be on a mission to save Marvel’s dragons, it’s possible that Earth’s dominant race are getting ready to enter their endgame, and humans will be the ones who pay the price, unless Namor and the Agents of Atlas can solve the problem before it’s too late.
