Nintendo Switch’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons has plenty of bugs, but not all of them are worth your time. Here are the 10 bugs you should ignore.

While popular Animal Crossing pastimes include shopping for clothes, befriending villagers, and paying off debt, bug-catching remains a staple in New Horizons. Collecting bugs isn’t technically necessary to progress in the game, but doing so will allow players to complete their Critterpedia, fill up the museum, and win big at Bug-Offs. Additionally, players can sell bugs for bells. However, some bugs are definitely more worthwhile than others. Though players will want to catch every bug once, there are certain species that, after being caught and donated to the museum, have little use. This is primarily because they sell for a low number of bells. We’re here to look at the least-valuable bugs now.
Before we begin, it’s worth noting that the months we mention that certain bugs appear in are only applicable to islands in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, the number of bells we suggest that each critter sells for is in reference to what the Nooklings will pay (Flick offers 50 percent more). It’s time to pull out your net and fly to the island. Here are 10 bugs in New Horizons that aren’t worth catching.
10 Cicada Shell
Though cicada shells are technically just the abandoned skins of adult cicadas, they are treated like bugs in New Horizons. First introduced in New Leaf, cicada shells can be found on the side of trees during the months of July and August.
Because a cicada shell isn’t living, it doesn’t run away if a player runs past a tree it rests on. Unfortunately, it will sell for a measly 10 bells for this same reason.
9 Fly
Flies aren’t hard to find. Just leave out some trash (which you’ll most likely acquire through fishing), and soon enough, one of these little critters will land on it.
Flies can be caught year-round, so there’s no rush to score one right away. They sell for 60 bells.
8 Ant
Fleas sell for only 70 bells, while ants sell for 80. That being said, you’ll need to catch many fleas (which can be found swarming around villagers) to complete a Nook Mileage Challenge, therefore they remain necessary. Ants, however, are not.
The easiest way to catch ants is by leaving out turnips to rot. Because turnips can be expensive, though, you’ll probably spend more on turnips then you’ll actually receive from selling an ant.
7 Stinkbug
While Stinkbugs appeared on trees in New Leaf, these creatures can now be found on flowers in New Horizons.
Stinkbugs can be scouted out approximately between the months of March and October, so there’s a large span of time to track them down. Additionally, they appear at all times of the day. Stinkbugs sell for 120 bells.
6 Moth
Moths are nocturnal creatures, and can, therefore, be found between the hours of 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. year-round. You will likely find them gathering near a light unless you chase them into the dark.
These bugs aren’t difficult to catch, as long as you play in the evening every once in a while. They go for 130 bells in New Horizons.
5 Cricket
Crickets also sell for 130 bells in New Horizons, though you’ll spot them on the ground instead of the sky.
From 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. in September, October, and November, these bugs will roam your island. While they’re noisy and easy to come across, they definitely won’t help you become a bellionaire.
4 Pondskater
Pondskaters are uniquely found lying on the surface of bodies of water, including rivers and, as their name suggests, ponds. This makes them easy to catch since they can’t really run away.
These bugs are found between the daylight hours of 8 a.m. and 7 .p.m. during summertime, from May to September. They go for 130 bells at Nook’s Cranny.
3 Mosquito
Mosquitos are evening bugs, which can be found flying around the island in the summer. They come out between 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. in the months of June, July, August, and September.
Though mosquitoes are tiny and hard to see, they do make a buzzing noise that alerts players of their presence. Though they don’t swell up a player’s’ eyes as wasps do, mosquitoes can still sting players. At a selling price of 130 bells, the hassle isn’t worth it.
2 Monarch Butterfly
Monarch butterflies are pretty, but they’re not huge moneymakers. They are commonly spotted between September and November for 13 hours each day, between 4 a.m. and 5 p.m.
They’re common and are usually found near flowers. Their selling price of 140 bells makes them these critters the least valuable butterflies in the game.
1 Common Butterfly
As can be gotten from its name, common butterflies are easy to find. They are usually found fluttering around players’ islands between the months of September and June, during the hours between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Common butterflies don’t move fast and are easy to catch, but because of this, they only sell for 160 bells. It’s also worth noting that yellow butterflies, grasshoppers, and rice grasshoppers also sell for this price and are fairly easy to scout out so they, too, are not worth your time.
