Animal Crossing Amiibo Cards Are Going for Ridiculous Prices Online

As new villagers were announced for the latest Animal Crossing: New Horizons expansion, demand for new and older Amiibo cards is skyrocketing. As such, when trying to purchase specific Animal Crossing: New Horizons villager Amiibo cards or older collections, expect to see some truly ridiculous prices online.

With new characters like Shino and Wardell coming alongside returning fan-favorites like Lottie, players are eager to have them visit their island. Amiibo cards have the same functionality as Amiibo figures, and allow players to invite the character to the campsite on the island, create the potential to move in, and invite for activities like photoshoots or simply sharing a cup of coffee from Brewster. The Amiibo cards’ usefulness isn’t just limited to Animal Crossing: New Horizons either. They can also be used in a number of other Nintendo Switch games for items and other bonuses.

Typically, Amiibo cards retail for $50 and include 48 characters. At the time of this writing, the 5th series of cards has been released. There is a total of 448 cards, not including promos like the Welcome and Sanrio series. When checking online, individual characters sell anywhere between $1.49 and $8 depending on the character. Characters like Sasha, Ione, and Shino tend to sell for more individually and are sold out more often.

Many independent retailers will offer bundles that get progressively cheaper. For instance, when looking at pricing from one seller, an individual card sells for $1.89, 2 for $1.80 each, and 3 for $1.70 each. Still, to round out the entire collection gets very expensive. For example, if a vendor is selling cards at the low end of the scale at $1.49 each and each card was available for that rate (not marked up because of character demand), the total for the entire series collection would be $667.52. Amiibo card sales on the high end at $2.50 each bring the total to $1120.

While it does sting that independent online sellers have a tendency to snatch up great quantities of stock and create a scarcity, there is a small silver lining. For players that aren’t interested in all of the villagers and only want to get a few cards instead of the entire $50 pack, they are able to and at a fraction of the cost. Yes, they’re still technically paying more individually, but in the bigger scheme, there is a potential for savings.

Plus, the unkind reality is that as new packs go on sale, already hard-to-find older packs become even harder to find. As such, independent vendors quickly become one of the more reliable sources for cards. The ideal solution would be for Nintendo to produce more cards and for retailers to instill strict purchase limits, but that is unlikely to happen. As such, players and collectors must seek out the best deal they can for the villagers they truly care about.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for Nintendo Switch.
