The DLC brings a number of new activities, furniture pieces, and decor items to Animal Crossing and the Happy Home Archipelago, as well as some new effects that can be added to customize homes and businesses. One of the coolest ways to customize a space in the new update is by editing the color and brightness of the lighting.

Similar to color-changing LED bulbs in the real world, Animal Crossing’s new lighting customization gives players full control of the hue and intensity of the lights in a room. Like changing the weather and time of day in the Happy Home Paradise DLC, this lighting feature allows players to set whatever mood they’d like, or even stage a space for different seasons and events without changing the decor. It is easy to do, but it takes a bit of time to unlock.

To be able to change the lighting in Animal Crossing’s new Happy Home Paradise DLC, players must progress through the DLC’s main campaign by designing vacation homes for Lottie. After designing eleven vacation homes, players will be promoted to “Breakout Designer.” Once this promotion has been obtained, players only need to design one more vacation home in order to be able to customize lighting in the game, which means they must complete a total of twelve home designs.

After achieving the “Breakout Designer” promotion in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC and then designing their 12th vacation home, players can talk to Lottie. She will tell them that they can now build a new business on the island, giving them the choice between a cafe or a restaurant. After making this choice, Lottie will show players how to change the color and intensity of the lighting to fit the mood.

To change the lighting, players will press the Down arrow and then the Left arrow while inside of a room, then select Lighting in the editing options. This will allow control over the lights in that room, including a sliding brightness scale and some colors to choose from. Players can use the left stick to edit the color and brightness, then hit the B button to accept the changes.

There are a variety of ways to change the energy of a room, but none do so quite as quickly or effectively as lighting up the entire place in a unique color. Players who can do this not only get to add some unique flavor to a room, but also get to show off the fact that they have customized quite a few vacation homes. Once the lighting customization techniques have been unlocked in Happy Home Paradise, like many other features from the DLC, players can use them on their home Animal Crossing: New Horizons island.
