Animal Crossing Players Dedication to Hacked Items Is INTENSE

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ fall update, Nintendo responded to players who have been using hacked items. Things like the fence used on Harv’s Island and trees that grew star fragments have been unceremoniously removed from player islands and are seemingly unattainable, at least using current methods.

Though the fall update brought tons of new Halloween-themed content to the game just in time for the season, many New Horizons players are disappointed at Nintendo for patching out the hacked items. Let’s take a look at what makes some of these items so valuable, why Nintendo may have made the call to purge them from player islands and if these items could ever see official implementation into the game.

One of the most sought-after hacked items is the fence used on Harv’s Island. It’s a wooden fence with a “campground” feel to it, which matches the aesthetic of Photopia. Hackers were able to obtain it by altering an item’s code to trick the game into thinking it’s actually this fence. Some even visited other people’s islands and left stacks of the fence as gifts for other players. Much like certain villagers, there were also people selling the fences on the Animal Crossing’s black market.

Part of the appeal of this fence might simply just be that it was unobtainable. Part of the reason people datamine and hack games to begin with is to see unused content and, if possible, to use it for themselves. From there, seeing one player with the forbidden fence may have caused others to want it as well, and those who were either unable to hack their Switches or weren’t comfortable with the idea had to commission those who could to hack it for them.

As for the star fragment trees, these may at first sound like they have some sort of gameplay benefit. In reality, they were completely decorative items that helped to give islands a cosmic feel and provide pretty atmospheric lighting at night rather than being a constant source of the rare material. Much like the fences, hackers were simply able to trick the game into loading a different model for the fruit of the tree. The actual fruit could still be something like pears or apples, but while it was on the tree, it had the appearance of star fragments.

It isn’t hard to understand the appeal of this star-speckled trees. They have a pleasant glow at night that can transform any island into something straight out of a fairytale. So, with so many players drawn to these aesthetic items, why would Nintendo remove them?

One possibly theory is that Nintendo simply doesn’t like people hacking their Switches or into New Horizons’ code. Nintendo has taken a preventative stance when it comes to people hacking its games, as the company has banned people from Nintendo Switch Online who have been caught using a hacked Switch. It may see any tampering with their game’s code as potentially dangerous.

It’s also possible Nintendo has plans to add some of these items in a future update. While star fragment trees may not be on the table, Harv’s Fence certainly seems like something that could come be added in the future. The situation may be like how Nintendo took down fan-remixes of the Undertale track, Megalovania before the Sans Mii Costume was officially announced, or when it shut down the popular fan-made Super Mario Royale before releasing its own Mario-themed battle royale in Super Mario 35. If this is the case, if would make sense why Nintendo would rather keep fans waiting for these items to be released in an official manner.
