Dr. STONE Reboot: Byakuya Ties Beautifully Into The Main Series

The original Dr. Stone manga is a currently ongoing Weekly Shonen Jump title written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi. According to Inagaki, Dr. Stone Reboot: Byakuya is a “what if?” story set in an alternate universe from the main series. By Inagaki’s admission, it’s non-canon, but it still uses the same real-world setting, events and characters associated with the original Dr. Stone. By all accounts, Reboot feels canon, but perhaps saying it doesn’t give the mangaka flexibility to choose whether or not they want to use plot points Boichi established here.

All that said, this one-volume story reintroduces readers to Senku’s adoptive father, Byakuya Ishigami. He was initially fully introduced in Chapter 42 of Dr. Stone after Senku first discovers the villagers of Ishigami Village. In that chapter, a flashback sequence occurs where we witness a young Senku’s curiosity about space and Byakuya’s goal of becoming an astronaut in hopes of making Senku proud of him. We see that Byakuya ultimately passes his exam and is finally able to launch into space. Reboot continues from this point.

Three days after launching into space, the original mass-petrification event that wiped out humanity at the start of Dr. Stone is also the catalyst for this manga. Byakuya and crew, who are outside the petrification beam’s range, safely witness the event from the International Space Station. It’s unclear how Byakuya concludes that humanity must have been turned to stone, but he’s determined to get back down to Earth to save them nonetheless. He especially wants to reunite with Senku, whom he is convinced will awaken from the stone and help bring humanity back.

Without getting into major spoilers, most of this one-volume story takes place in space. The original Dr. Stone is set on Earth where Senku and crew problem-solve and craft objects to pave the way for their mission to restore humanity. In contrast, Reboot partially focuses on the logistics of getting back to Earth from space as technology begins to fail and maintaining a space station with limited resources. Despite already knowing where Byakuya and crew end up, the spinoff series offers an exciting view of characters working through this catastrophic event in real-time.

Speaking of characters, Byakuya is about as infectiously fun as Senku, if not more. With several chapters in the limelight, we get to see how great, loving and kind of a man he was. His charm carries the story, almost making it frustrating that we have a finite time with him. That said, Byakuya carries much of Reboot on his back, as he overshadows the rest of his crew, who are ultimately pretty forgettable.

The exception is Byakuya’s adorable robot Rei 23, who becomes the focus of the second half of the manga. Rei 23 leads readers through an entertaining but emotional story from a robot’s perspective while stuck on a failing space station. Despite sounding boring, the isolated adventure plays out in equal parts wholesome and nerve-wracking. Everything is elevated by how spectacular Boichi’s art is, bringing life and emotion to a robot and fostering a substantial degree of concern for its livelihood.

From the detailed space suits, robotics and machinery, to solid character designs that readers of Dr. Stone have become accustomed to for a while now, Boichi delivers. Just as he was able to convey Senku’s rudimentary gadgets in the original story, he also gorgeously illustrates the complex intricacies of an entire space station. Whether it’s the lush greenery and the blue ocean of Earth or the vast dark blanket of space, it’s apparent that Boichi’s skill shines no matter what the setting.

The experience was brief, but this single volume “prequel” packed an emotional punch that continues to show that Boichi is a highly talented artist but also highlights some writing chops too. Dr. Stone Reboot: Byakuya is a heartfelt story that significantly adds to the main series and potentially lays the groundwork for later plot points. For fans of the original series, this is a must-read.
