The 10 Best Races In Initial D Ranked

Of the best race anime of all time, Initial D always makes it to the list. Adapted from a manga by Shuichi Shigeno, Initial D is all about 18-year-old Takumi Fujiwara’s racing adventures. It’s also a narrative about Takumi’s coming-of-age. Most of all, it’s a story about breaking the law, making it a fun and worthwhile teenage fantasy.

The premise of Initial D is that Takumi helps his father with his tofu business. Every morning he makes tofu deliveries to a hotel on Akina, a rather tedious track. This shapes Takumi into a honed driver of his father’s Toyota Sprinter (AE86).

Meanwhile, in desperate need of a driver, the local SpeedStars club recruits Takumi, thus trying to reboot their career as the greatest local race club again. And that’s just the damn beginning. Here are the 10 best races in Initial D.

10 INITIAL D: THIRD STAGE (THE MOVIE, 2001 )

This begins with Takumi Fujiwara’s twin worries of graduating high school and of taking down his enemies. As Takumi Fujiwara’s reputation is slowly building, he is offered a spot on Ryousuke Takahashi’s Kengai Racing Team.

Takumi is indecisive, he challenges Ryousuke in hopes of finding an answer to the offer. As the two race, Takumi lets Ryousuke take the lead in the battle. In the end, both Takumi and Ryosuke drive side-by-side and Takumi decides to take up Ryosuke’s offer.

From the Fourth Stage, Act 4, “Two Pieces of Advice”, comes the leader/chaser race between Daiki and Takumi. This race is a classic chase thriller. It starts with Daiki deciding to go full throttle into the battle. Takumi is given two pieces/words of advice from Ryosuke: first off, to not look back and second, to shift gears at 9000 RPM and not at 11,0000.

The downhill battle takes place and Takumi adheres to Ryosuke’s advice. As Takumi pushes his abilities to the limit, the latter does take the lead for a long time. But in the end, Daiki’s attempt in defeating Takumi and his 86 fails.

8 FOURTH STAGE, ACTS 22, 23 & 24

The 10 Best Races In Initial D Ranked

The finale of Initial D, Fourth Stage is the story of a battle that has stretched far too long. It begins with the episodes: “Wizard of the One-Hand Steer,” continues into “Endless Battle” and concludes in “The Challenge Without End.”

This is the most incredible race of Fourth Stage and of the Initial D anime, overall. In his battle with Dr. Toshiya “Good Arm” Joushima, Takumi is rendered scared shitless. The two’s street racing skills are put to the ultimate test. As Takumi comes to the conclusion that Toshiya has the same aura that Impreza driver had, it makes the battle all about endurance.

Although Takumi doesn’t show off the same set of driving skills that Toshiya does, due to his endurance, he wins the battle. The highlight of the race is when Toshiya vomits at the end of the eighth run. Takumi learns his lesson and accepts the importance of risky maneuvers as the screen fades to “See you again.”

7 FIFTH STAGE, ACT 9

The 10 Best Races In Initial D Ranked

Everyone who has watched Initial D religiously knows this battle was destined to happen. It kicks off with act 9, titled “Shinigami” where Ryosuke and Rin Shinigami battle it out. This battle becomes more interesting as the backstory is revealed- a love triangle between Ryosuke, Rin, and the long-dead Kaori.

Of course when two boys are competing over a girl– even a dead one– everything becomes more intense. The emotional stakes are high. Kaori’s blood is on Rin’s hands. The battle continues into the tenth Act, “Full Stop.”

The drivers’ struggle becomes life-threatening. This is exemplified by the blinding moment is when Rin’s tires and brakes are shot, almost at the end of the tracks, turning his R32 into an unstoppable force.

6 SECOND STAGE, ACT 3

This episode, “Premonition of Defeat” is the race between Seiji and Kyoichi. Seiji’s Evo IV goes into full-throttle into the battle. Kyoichi Sudō, the Emperor’s team leader tries to knock some sense into Seiji at the beginning of the competition. Given that Kyoichi is the first racer to defeat Takumi in the Second Stage, his beating Takumi at every level at the behest of his Evo IV is a thrill to watch. In the second half of the battle, although Takumi wins, his victory doesn’t feel as sweet.

5 SECOND STAGE, ACT 12

The twelfth episode, titled “Eight-Six vs. Eight-Six: The Battle of Souls” indeed lives up to its name. The essence of this battle lies in the fact that there were no predispositions between Takumi and Wataru Akiyama. This battle serves as the final-battle of Initial D: Second Stage.

The battle is again the test of Takumi’s endurance, with the leader and the chaser switching positions constantly. Takumi rests his battle on his adaptability, overtakes Wataru by taking the mudslide road and claims his victory.

4 FIFTH STAGE, ACT 14

The fourteenth episode, titled “Conclusion! Extreme Hill Climb,” takes the race between Keisuke’s FD and Go Hojo’s NSX into the climax stage. Keisuke’s performance in the previous stage shocks many, including his opponent. The second stage is an intense hill-climb, where Keisuke takes Hojo head-on, which scares the latter. This battle is crucial in that it is the stepping stone to Initial D: The Final Stage.

3 FINAL STAGE, ACT 2

The Keisuke and Hojo battle set the precedent for a Takumi vs. Shinji Inui battle. It was during the fourteenth Act that Shinji Inui revealed that he would race Takumi downhill. As Takumi readies to race Shinji in “Natural” (First Act, Final Stage), Shinji’s hidden power starts to come out, leaving everyone shell-shocked.

2 FINAL STAGE, ACT 3

The 10 Best Races In Initial D Ranked

In the previous act, “The Strongest Enemy”, Takumi and Shinji continue to outrun each other. Shinji’s hidden talents are no less than a shock to Takumi, forcing him to focus. As Shinji allows Takumi to overtake him, everyone fears for Project D’s conclusion.

In Act 3, “Dangerous Scent”, both Takumi and Shinji are involved in a struggle to take the lead. As the battle nears its end, so will the reign of Project D. Takumi and Shinji will go separate ways. Both will have won hearts but only one the race.

1 FINAL STAGE: ACT 4

The last Act of the Final Stage, “Dream” is Project D’s finale. As Takumi and Shinji go downhill, the battle goes from intense to insane. This isn’t just about audiences’ burning desire to see a winner here. There is also the question: what does “D” from Initial D really mean?

In a classic adventure trope, the race is neck and neck. Takumi narrows his eyes, presses hard on the accelerator at 13,000 RPM. As his wheels lock up, he takes a drift, forcing Shinji to drift too. Takumi emerges as the clear winner as he reverses back to the finishing point.

Takumi’s car takes a different path, revealing the deeper symbolism underlying his passion to be the fastest.
